Written post heart bypass.
The complications kept him in the hospital for days, over Christmas. He spent a good deal of that time not conscious, barely alive.
June never left his side any further than the doctors made her, and they didn’t do that all that often. Until he was safe and awake, she didn’t leave the hospital, hardly slept not because she wasn’t provided with a bed but because she preferred to sit and hold his hand and talk to him and pray- a total of at least nine days.
So this, this is beautiful, but what stands out to me about this story the most is June fucking Carter, who loved him with everything she had, with a passion and strength that might on occasion be equaled but could never be exceeded.
A love like that just might be strong enough to keep someone’s heart beating.
