Everything is coming together to overwhelm him - his exhaustion, his inability to escape his responsibilities for even a moment for an embrace.

How can he possibly avoid battle? How can he prevent open war in the city without calling on Bahamut? Why has Olivier suddenly been made emperor? Why are there no reinforcements, why is he sent into endless war?

He is grasping for any light in the darkness, the best path out of all of this conflict, but he can't find it.

He is engaged, lashing out at one of his dragoons, his facade crumbling.

And then Joshua enters. Every thought stills. Dion's gaze never leaves the Phoenix as he stares at him in open shock and wonder.

He has his answer.

He has no peers, no one in whom he can truly confide. His emotions are already volatile enough--who can blame him for reacting to the missive the way he does?

Then in walks Joshua, unmistakable despite the years and the apparently-inaccurate reports of his death. Like recognizes like, and it's a port in the storm of change that's tearing Dion apart. Someone who KNOWS. Someone who UNDERSTANDS in a way that few--if any--others can.

phoenixflare week day 6: isekai/crossovers/multiverses

Joshua wakes up on the sandy beach of a strange island. As he wipes the salt from his eyes and sees that the giant crystal in the sky that was Origin is gone. Clive did it! He defeated Ultima! But now there is no sign of his brother anywhere, and the last time he saw his other companion...

Joshua looks out over the sea and mourns.

The sun is getting low in the sky, so Joshua starts walking down the beach, knowing he needs to find shelter. As the horizon seems to roll into view, he sees another figure lying in the sand ahead. A very familiar figure. DION!!

Joshua runs up to Dion's side. It is him! Unconscious, but alive!

Finally Dion wakes up, a bit woozy from his ordeal, but miraculously uninjured! The two of them feel a sudden sense of joy and happiness.

As they explore the island, Dion and Joshua discovered that it is already inhabited by a community of sentient animals! They quickly meet and befriend their new neighbors.

Some of the animals are more odd than others.

Joshua and Dion are given permission by the local mayor to set up their own home. They quickly learn how to live and pass the time on the island.

The residents also have plenty of other amenities for Dion and Joshua to enjoy! There is a museum with its own cafe, a local music scene, and tourism of other nearby islands!

Dion doesn't even mind the sea shanties!

Maybe they can make something beautiful with this new island life.
