João Alberto Silveira Freitas was murdered by two security guards (one an off-duty police officer) in Brazil late Thursday. He died on a Brazilian national holiday for Black Consciousness and Awareness, Dia da Consciência Negra.

The horrifying video shows the guards brutalizing João Alberto Silveira Freitas as he cries out, bloody, and forcefully brought to the ground. Emergency responders failed to resuscitate him. It’s the exact same horror as George Floyd. 

Black Brazilians bear the brunt of police violence. Just last year, more than 75 percent of the 5,800 people killed by police were Black. 

We cannot be silent about João Alberto Silveira Freitas’s massacre and injustice. 

All Black lives matter. Brazilian Black lives matter ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

I strongly urge all of you to sign this petition demanding justice for George Floyd. It is our duty as citizens of this country to not only raise awareness in any means possible, but take action against positions of power shrouded in institutionalized racism. Join me in demanding justice from Attorney Michael Freeman–the four officers involved in Floyd’s death can not walk free.
