Notes: First, before I forget, all the thanks to the fantastic and brilliant @bangtanbeforebitchesāĀ and @sugalaritaeā. Without either of you and your feedback and encouragement, I would still be stuck on these two idiots, having no way to propel them in any direction.
Iām so sorry itās taken me so long to put up another chapter. Hopefully, because itās on the longer side, it will be worth the wait! Iām pregnant with my 5th child and as it was, um, unexpected, it really threw a wrench in my writing! I was basically down for about 3 months just exhausted and nauseated the whole time. I donāt know how quickly I will be able to write the last two chapters of this fic, but I do promise to finish this as diligently as I can in the midst of editing and writing other stuff (like a novel).
Thank you for your patience and your kindness!!! I appreciate you all!!!
Summary:Ā Ā Namjoon didnāt know what he expected when he and Mirae entered Altonās penthouse but you calmly sipping a steaming cup of tea in your kitchen was not it.
āNoona, are you okay?ā he asked gently as he grabbed a seat at your table.
Your eyes were red-rimmed and puffy as you flicked your gaze to his. āIāve been better, but Iāll be okay,ā you reassured.
He was not reassured. Namjoon knew more than anyone just how good you were at acting. āYou donāt have to pretend for me,ā he said.
A snarl choked in your throat. āAnd you donāt have to pretend to feel bad for me, Namjoon. I know you donāt approve.ā

There was a time when youād been certain the thing you wanted most was for the King to suffer.
You would fantasize about it; spend your waking hours longing for it ā certain the only thing that could bring you some semblance of peace was your husbandās utter distress. Certain that seeing him broken would be the only way to feel whole.
But itās strange, isnāt it?
The heaviness with which he drops into the ornate wingback chair at your bedside does not make you feel any lighter. The sober expression on his face as he regards you does not make you feel in any way vindicated. Nor is there any triumph to be had in the guilt that seems to radiate from his every pore, subtle as a beacon.
āHow are you feeling?āĀ
You stifle a sigh. Itās the Kingās second visit to your chamber today alone and by now there is little polite, meaningless conversation left to be had.
āMuch the same as I felt two hours ago, Your Grace,ā you answer, regretting the blunt edge to your words when his face falls. Youāre careful to soften your tone as you add, āWhich is to say much improved. Thank you.ā
A heavy quiet falls over the chamber again. You canāt make out the sound of the maids walking the halls outside or the ever-present din of chattering footmen on the floors below. Even the motes of dust in the air seem suspended in place, hanging motionless in the shafts of sunlight that stream in from behind your heavy curtains.
āIāve yet to leave this bed but I think Iām feeling a bit stronger today,ā you offer feebly, speaking only when the King seems to have resigned himself to silence. āThe doctor assures me this is a passing malaise, nothing more.ā
Your husband nods, the corners of his mouth lifting in a weak attempt at a smile.Ā
There was a time when you might have relished the melancholy on his face. Might have found the uncharacteristic slump of his shoulders gratifying. Or taken some sordid pleasure in the way he smooths his damp palms over the thick weave of his breeches, over and over again.
But itās strange, isnāt it?
None of it brings you any satisfaction. Seeing the King wounded does not make you less wounded. And his unhappiness does not in any way alleviate your own.
āIāll be sure to share the details of your recovery with the many people whoāve asked after you,ā he says with a joyless chuckle.Ā āI think theyāll have my head if I donāt bring them good news in short order.ā
But is Lord Jung among them?Ā
As they so often do, your thoughts wander from the man before youāyour husbandāto the enigmatic Royal Guardsman. You think back to the last time you saw him, to the way heād taken the lead in seeing you cared for when youād been burning with fever.Ā You think of the quiet authority and reassurance in his voice as heād helped you reach your chambers and bed. You think of the way that voice had hardened in the tense moments after Lord Jeon had confessed to not being able to find the King.
You think of that perplexing confrontation in the courtyard.Ā Ā
Youāve had little more to do than contemplate the circumstances of that exchange for days now, turning the strange scene over in your mind while confined to your sickbed.Ā What you would give to have just an inkling of what transpired between those men that night, to have any small insight into the words spoken during that terse conversation.Ā Though in truth, some part of you suspects you already know.Ā
Certainly something is behind your husbandās sudden bout of attentiveness.
You roll your shoulders and knead at the stiff muscles of your neck, body strained and sore from days of idleness.Ā The pillows pressed against your lower back have slipped just enough to cause discomfort and you reach behind yourself to rearrange them.
āI can do that for you,ā the King says, rushing to his feet.Ā Ā
He is standing at your side before you have a chance to protest the matter, carefully slipping the pillows out from behind you, painstakingly fluffing the feathers inside them until heās satisfied with their new shape. Then he leans over the bed, solid body hovering over yours as he replaces them.Ā You will yourself not to stiffen at his nearness, but the truth is that youāre not accustomed to being this close to your husband. Physically or otherwise.
āHow does that feel?ā he asks, deep voice at your ear as he moulds the pillows to the curve of your back.
āMuch better, thank you,ā you murmur, feeling a ripple of tension work its way up your spine when Namjoon straightens and stands back to assess his work. Your husband holds your gaze for a few slow, tortuous seconds, lips parted as though he means to speak.Ā
Then he seems to think better of it, clearing his throat instead and looking away.Ā
You watch his eyes move to the table at your bedside, where a fine crystal vase houses what is sure to be the two most pitiful daisies in the entire Kingdom. Boramās note had said that Yeona selected them for you herself, the evidence of her indelicate touch plain on the flowersā bruised petals and flattened stems. You treasure the mangled blooms anyway.
āTheyāre a bit worse for the wear, Iām afraid,ā you comment lightly, watching the King stroke a wilted white petal with his fingertip. āYeona is still too young to understand that some things must be handled with care.ā
āSo it would seem,ā he says, lips twitching with amusement.Ā Ā
But the humor in his expression falls away as his eyes move from the daisies to the tiny bauble seated beside the delicate crystal vase.Ā He stares at it for a while before reaching for it, the small trinket dwarfed in the palm of his large hand. You study him as he studies it, expression somber as he strokes a thumb over the birdās smooth green wings.Ā Ā
And for the very first time, you see it.Ā Ā
No. You allow yourself to see it.
The turmoil etched into the deep crease between your husbandās brows. The regret in the firm press of his lips and the embarrassment simmering in his eyes. The remorse that shrouds him like a dark halo, hovering over him like a storm cloud.
You see it quite clearly now, donāt you? As though youāve been wearing your pride and resentment like a blindfold and itās suddenly fallen away, allowing you to recognize whatās been in front of you all this time.
When the King flicks his weary, dark eyes to meet yours, you donāt see your philandering husband ā though certainly he is that. You see a deeply conflicted man, fighting a war on two sides.Ā Married to one woman and in love with another. Condemning both to a strange kind of half-life in which neither will ever truly be happy. Condemning himself, too.Ā
āI should let you rest,ā he says at last, setting the bird down and you nod, a sudden tightness in your throat.Ā
āYes,ā you agree, voice thick. āI think thatās best.ā
The King leans close to you again, this time to press a soft kiss to your cheek. His hands find yours on the duvet and he squeezes them tight, causing ludicrous tears to spring to your eyes. You lower them so as not to give yourself away.Ā Ā
It is only when he has gone, when the door to your chamber is firmly shut, that you finally allow yourself to breathe. And then you sit there for a while, stupefied.
There was a time when youād thought you would never share anything with your husband. But youād been wrong.
The two of you share the same muted misery, the same low thrum of sadness that taints all things, good and bad. You share the same bone-deep unhappiness borne from this arrangement and the same secret fury at being powerless to change it.
Husband and wife, bound to one another for life.Ā Both damned to have happiness dangle at your fingertips, but never the ability to grasp it.
Till death do you part.
āļøāļøāļøāļø
Though you feel remarkably improved after four days of confinement, Hyeri insists you stay in bed for an entire week.
The older woman has always fancied herself a bit of a mother hen, but since the onset of your illness sheās become more like a guard dog. Sheās taken to sleeping on a cot in your chamber and keeping fastidious notes on your care and progress. And sheās safeguarded you like a sentry, allowing no one but the doctor and the King past the threshold to your private rooms.
Youāve taken great pains to endure her meddling with grace ā in part because youāve been in no position to fight such battles in your weakened state and in part because you understand that her coddling is rooted in genuine care and concern. Surely she must long for the children she raised and whoāve long since left her nest to start their own families. And so in their absence, you must do.
But that does not mean you intend to spend a single second longer than necessary trapped inside this chamber.Ā
So you rise with the sun on the seventh day of your captivity, filled with a newfound determination. You are determined to leave the staid air of this chamber and breathe fresh air into your lungs. You are determined to stretch your sore muscles with a vigorous walk. And you are absolutely determined to put your foot down, lovingly, with your handmaid turned nursemaid turned jailer.Ā
And youāll not allow anything ā certainly not the arrival of your monthly courses ā to put a damper on this day.
āWeāre going to have to take your gowns in,ā Hyeri grumbles as her nimble fingers pull at the laces of your corset. Sheād made an unhappy sound when youād announced plans for a morning walk, but has thus far managed to refrain from voicing her discontent out loud. āToo many days without eating properly.Ā You ought to take two servings at every meal until youāre filled out again.ā
āI assure you, my appetite is fully restored along with my health,ā you say, stomach rumbling beneath your skirts at the very mention of food. āI could probably take three servings in a sitting if I put my mind to it.ā
āVery good then,ā Hyeri chuckles, patting your back once the dress is fully secured. āIāll have breakfast brought up at once.ā
āNo, you absolutely will not,ā you protest, whirling on her. āIāll go mad if I spend another minute locked away in this chamber. Iāll take my breakfast down in the kitchens, thank you very much.ā
Hyeri huffs under her breath and you mimic the sound back. The older womanās eyes narrow and you return that gesture as well, crossing your arms in challenge. The two of you stand there for a while, glowering at one another like petulant children until the sound of a singing kettle breaks the stalemate.
Itās been days since youāve heard that sound, you realize. Days since Hyeri has set a steaming cup of that foul tea before you, only to watch you like a hawk until every last drop is gone. The shrill sound of that blasted kettle raises the hairs on the nape of your neck and sets your teeth on edge.Ā
And it brings to mind something else you intend to put your foot down about today.
You clear your throat as Hyeri moves to see to the kettle.
āI wonāt be taking the tea today, Hyeri,ā you announce, straightening your spine as your brace for the argument that is sure to come. Hyeri turns away from the fire, kettle in hand, and levels you with a look.
āYouāre rather spirited today, Your Grace. Do you intend to put more silver in my hair now that you are fully recovered?ā
āNo I do not,ā you say hotly. āBut I also do not intend to drink that tea. Today, tomorrow, or ever again.ā
Hyeriās rheumy eyes grow wide with shock. The playful arch of her brow falls and the teasing twist to her mouth slowly recedes. She stares at you as though she sees a stranger, not the young woman sheās come to know well after nearly one year in your service.Ā
Maybe you are a stranger now. You certainly donāt feel like the same woman whoād fallen into that sickbed one week ago, burning with fever. Something inside of you feels like itās shifted; like youāve emerged from this illness stronger in ways that go beyond the physical.
āI understand that your courses have come, Your Grace, but these things take time,ā she insists slowly, the paper-thin skin at the hollow of her throat wavering as she stops to swallow thickly. āI do not think now is the time to abandon this regimen. āThis requires time and dedication. If youāll just stay the course, youāll see.ā
Your bravado falters a bit at the wounded note in her voice, at the way her eyes start to pink around the rims. A tiny voice in your head warns not to press forward with the words that threaten to tumble out of your mouth but a louder voice urges you on, pushes you to make the cut as quick and clean as possible.
āHyeri, I owe you only gratitude for the way youāve treated me. And for your kindness in trying to help me conceive a child. But Iāve grown tired of pretending that this course of action will remedy my particular situation.āĀ You allow yourself a deep breath before adding, āOr his.ā
Hyeri blinks at you.
āI donāt understand what you mean, Your Grace.ā
āDonāt you?ā
You lift your chin to look Hyeri directly in the eyes, allowing your implication to hang in the air.Ā Slowly, your nursemaid blanches, the color draining from her sweet face until all that remains are two spots of color on her cheeks. She takes a step towards the table and slowly sinks into the chair, face frozen in an expression of disbelief.
āYou canāt āā the older woman starts and stops, looking bewildered. āā You canāt know that, Your Grace. You cannot be certain of such a thing.ā
āYouāre right,ā you concede quietly, āI cannot. But there is ample reason to suspect it.ā
Youāre careful to temper your argument to Hyeri, though in truth you are quite convinced of your husbandās inability to produce a child. If nothing else, your last encounter with the King has only strengthened the idea in your mind. Itās the very first time in your young marriage that youāve looked past your husbandās station and allowed yourself to see him as he truly is. His Grace ā Kim Namjoon ā is just a man. As fallible as any other.
But Hyeri has yet to come to any such realization. Her eyes shine bright with unshed tears from where she remains seated at the table, chin trembling.Ā
You cross the room to go to her, carefully settling in the seat beside her and taking one of her hands into yours. You remind yourself that Hyeri has devoted years of her life to working in service of the King, that her deference for him and the very institution he represents is in her blood. That some part of her likely still thinks of Namjoon as the gangly boy sheād helped rear and not the grown man he is now.Ā
And you remind yourself that despite her allegiance to your husband, sheās shown you nothing but kindness ā and for that alone, she deserves your respect.
āHyeri, please,ā you whisper, squeezing her fingers gently. āPlease know that I do not mean to upset you. I mean only to speak plainly, not to cause you any pain.ā
āI had thought ā I had thought there was some growth between the two of you, Your Grace. All those visits heās made to your chamber while youāve been ill. The way heād fretted over your health and care. I thought ā ā She pauses to shake her head as though chastising herself for entertaining such notions, āI thought that maybe something good could come of something bad.ā
Your heart squeezes at Hyeriās confession, at her well-meaning but poorly-placed idealism. You cannot fathom how despite everything sheās seen and heard, she can still hold onto the dream that what is broken between you and Namjoon can be fixed.Ā
But you cannot fault her for it, either.
āSomething good has come of it,ā you say gently. āIām not angry anymore. Not with the King and not with myself. It was weighing me down, Hyeri. As though I walked through this first year of my marriage with stones in my pockets.āĀ Ā
Hyeri dabs at the corners of her eyes with a sleeve.
āI know the King cares for me. I accept that.ā You speak the words out loud and they strike a chord inside your chest. You know they ring true. āJust as I accept that at the very same time, he does not love me. And now I must accept that there may never be a child.ā
āBut there must be a child, Your Grace.ā Hyeri sniffles under her breath as she wrenches her gaze from your joined hands to look you in the eye. āThe future of the throne depends on it. What will come of the Kingās line if he does not have an heir?ā
āI donāt know,ā you admit, thumb tracing an absentminded pattern over the soft, diaphanous skin of her knuckles. āPerhaps he will send me away.ā
āHe wouldnāt,ā Hyeri protests, indignation flaring behind her muted dark eyes.
You suspect that Hyeri has the right of it. Namjoon does not strike you as the kind of man whoād want to court such a scandal, nor does he seem uncaring enough to want to cut you loose in such a humiliating fashion. And as many times as youāve daydreamed about being freed from the shackles of this loveless marriage, the mere thought of returning home to your mother ā of bringing your entire family that kind of shame ā is devastating.Ā
Youād sooner throw yourself from the carriage tasked with taking you home than endure that fate.
āI say these things not to upset you, Hyeri. Or to speak ill of the King. I say them only because if Iāve learned nothing else since coming here, Iāve learned to guard my heart. This is me guarding my heart.ā
The tears gathered at the corners of Hyeriās eyes spill over, though she does not make a sound. You dab at them with your own sleeve now, earning a sad smile from your handmaid.
āThere could still be a child, Your Grace,ā she says softly, āSome day. None of us know whatās written on the days that are yet to come.ā
āYou are right,ā you concede with a sad smile. āAnd I would be very glad to be wrong.ā
āSo there is always hope,ā Hyeri concludes, squaring her shoulders. Just speaking the words out loud seems to have reinforced her spirit. In this moment, she reminds you of the daisies at your bedside ā battered but still bending towards the sunlight.
āYes,ā you agree, if only to bring her some solace. āThere is always hope.ā
āļøāļøāļøāļø
The King calls for dinner to be held in the great hall to celebrate your return to good health.
He surprises you by seeing to many of the details himself, though you suspect Hyeri has played some part in bringing his vision to life. The generous spread wheeled out and served to the guests in attendance consists of only your most beloved dishes and desserts. And the hall is decorated in a bevy of cosmos flowers ā the very kind that grow in abundance in Namjoonās grand aviary.
Itās not all his doing, of course. It is the kitchen staff that spends hours preparing the food and the steward who sees to each plush flower centerpiece placed at the tables. But it is the King who directs their steps, and in doing so you cannot help but feel flattered by his consideration.
But you also cannot help but be flustered by his attention.
Whereas Namjoon would normally spend the lionās share of his evening consorting with the assembled guests, tonight he has yet to stray more than an armās length from your side. You are keenly aware of his nearness as smiling people approach you from all sides, each expressing what seems to be genuine relief at news of your recovery.
Itās been months since the last communal dinner was held in this hall, and perhaps that is why it seems as though you could be swallowed whole in the sea of people gathered here tonight. Foreign and familiar faces alike swim by in all directions. Children cut narrow paths through the fray, darting between legs as they chase one another around, their laughter barely audible over the din of clinking cups and clattering dishes.
You do not know at what point you start searching each passing face for a pair of searing almond-shaped eyes and a heart-shaped mouth. But you do know at which point you realize it.
āYou are not fatigued, are you?ā
The sound of your husbandās deep baritone at the shell of your ear nearly makes you jump. You turn to him, careful to keep your eyes downcast. Certain that if you allow him too close a look heāll recognize the guilt written all over your face.Ā
Certainly he would know what it looks like.
āNot at all. Though I must admit to my feet being tired,ā you sigh, gesturing to the beautiful calfskin boots that peek out from beneath your heavy skirts. āIām afraid these are not quite broken in yet.ā
āThen Iāll get you a chair,ā the King says without hesitation, turning at once to make good on that promise. You stop him with one firm tug to his arm.Ā
āPlease no,ā you protest, by now thoroughly unsettled by your husbandās careful oversight. āThatās not necessary, truly. I think Iāll walk around a bit and see if I can find Boram. I can rest my feet while we speak.ā
āVery well,ā Namjoon agrees, dark eyes boring into yours. āSend word immediately if you need me.ā
You are bowing to him before the words are even fully out his mouth, quickling slipping away and into the current of moving bodies around you. You try not to call attention to yourself, but it cannot be helped. The crowds part to make way as you walk, people stopping to bow as you pass. You acknowledge each with an absentminded smile as you resume your search for those familiar dark eyes. You cannot find them.
āYour Grace!ā
But it is only moments later that a familiar voice finds you. It breaks clear through the commotion and you turn toward it to find Boram waving at you from her seat at the longtable, sweet Yeona perched on her lap. The baby mimics her motherās gesture, flapping her own hand wildly in greeting. The sight of them both is enough to make your heart burst.
āOh, how Iāve missed you girls,ā you sigh, surging forward to envelop both in an indelicate hug. You take a seat at Boramās side and she proudly lifts Yeona to her feet. The baby plants them firmly on her motherās lap, legs strong and steady beneath her.
āHow is it possible sheās changed so much in little more than a week?ā you wonder aloud, smiling in response to Yeonaās happy gurgle and wide grin. āShe looks like a child ready to walk and not the little dumpling I saw last.ā
āShe really does,ā Boram agrees with a wistful smile. āItās all happening so fast. But you, My Grace, you look changed too! Even more vibrant than before. I would scarcely believe youāve just emerged from your sickbed if I did not know it to be true.ā
Your friendās praise sends a pleasant heat to your cheeks.
āYou flatter me,ā you demur with a soft smile. āIām so relieved to be free from confinement that I must be wearing my happiness for everyone to see, thatās all.ā
āWell, it suits you,ā Boram declares. āWe were all quite worried about you. When Yoongi came home that day, heād told me you were in a terrible state. I pestered him for news every day until he told me of your recovery.ā
āI cannot recall ever feeling so ill,ā you admit. āBut I was well cared for, thankfully. And Yeonaās flowers were at my bedside to brighten my spirits. And I have yet to see Lord Min and thank him personally for helping me that day. Is he here tonight?ā
āSomewhere,ā Boram laughs. āOff with the men, I suppose. Iāve been waiting on him to return so that I might have an opportunity to stretch my legs and greet some of the old friends Iāve seen walking about.āĀ She gestures to a tankard at the empty space beside her. āBut he canāt have wandered too far if heās left his ale behind.ā
You laugh, reaching out to tickle Yeonaās belly and the baby squeals in response.
āGo on then,ā you say, reaching for Yeona. She comes to you without hesitation, grin wide enough to bare the tiny teeth that have broken through her bottom gums. āI can sit with Yeona and you can have a few minutes to yourself. Weāll be right here when you return.ā
āAre you sure you donāt mind? Sheās dry and fed and I wonāt be gone long.ā
āI donāt mind at all,ā you insist, bouncing Yeona on your knee and earning another squeal. āIām happy to keep her any time you need a break.ā
Boramās smile is genuine and grateful. She puts a hand on your knee and squeezes it as she leans in to kiss her baby girlās cheek.Ā
āYou are very kind, Your Grace. Thank you.ā
You smile back, passing a hand over the soft hair at Yeonaās crown, smoothing down the tiny curls that have sprung up around her ears. āItās no trouble at all.ā
Boram casts a backward glance at you both as she leaves and you reassure her with a wave, which Yeona is quick to mimic.
āSuch a smart girl, arenāt you?ā you coo, pressing a kiss to her temple and inhaling her sweet scent. āSmartest girl in the entire kingdom. Perhaps some day you will be queen, hmm?ā
āThat would be an interesting turn of events,ā a voice that is certainly not Yeonaās answers. The sound of it steals your breath and you turn towards it slowly, only to find Lord Jung standing before you. His dark eyes dance with amusement. āAlthough I think poor Yoongi would perish at the very notion of a royal bride price.ā
Itās a wonder that Yeona does not fuss when your hold on her goes a bit tight in response to his sudden appearance. Your heart rattles inside your ribcage.Ā
āMy Lord,ā you breathe, eyes wide as you watch him take a seat beside you. āForgive me, I did not see you there.ā
āPerhaps you ought to forgive me,ā he says playfully, offering Yeona a finger that she immediately seizes with one chubby fist. āI did not announce myself.ā
He smiles at Yeona then ā full and brilliant ā and she surprises you by turning coquettishly away to bury her face in the crook of your neck. Lord Jung chuckles and you find yourself staring at him, dazzled stupid by his beauty. Breath caught in your throat as your eyes sweep over his long, sooty lashes and sunkissed skin.Ā
Has he always been this breathtaking?
Yeona lifts her head to peek at him once more. He reaches out to tickle her and then sheās hiding her face again, smothering her giggles against you.
āI think she fancies you,ā you say at last, swallowing thickly when Lord Jung lifts his dark eyes to meet yours.
āIām a bit too old for her, Iām afraid,ā he teases, mouth curved into a soft smile. It slowly falls away as his expression grows more serious.
āItās a relief to see you looking so well, Your Grace,ā he murmurs. āTruly.ā
There is a sincerity in that declaration that makes you feel warm and pliant inside. You shift Yeona on your lap so that you might have a plausible reason to look away, though truly it is only because looking him in the eye makes you feel vulnerable.
āIt is a relief to be well,ā you admit shyly. āAnd that is in large part due to you, My Lord. The other men, as well,ā you add, almost as an afterthought. āI still shudder to think what might have happened that day had Lord Jeon not found me when he did.ā
āYes, I think we are all grateful for his vigilance. And I am glad that we were able to help,ā Lord Jung says, watching you rub circles across Yeonaās back. The baby settles into your hold, soft cheek pressed to the juncture of your neck. āI hate to see anyone in that condition.ā
You flick your eyes up at the note of melancholy in that statement. Surely he must be thinking of his late wife and her untimely death. To hear Boram tell it, the young woman passed nearly a year before your arrival here but something about his somber expression makes you wonder if that wound is still fresh. If you were a more courageous woman, you would ask.Ā
But you are not.
āWell I am healthy now, My Lord,ā you reassure him. āFully recovered and feeling more like myself than I have in ages.ā
He smiles as he reaches one hand out to stroke the soft curls at the base of Yeonaās neck. The baby sighs under her breath, but does not stir.
āIām working at the stables this week,ā he says after a moment. āPerhaps now that you feel ā ā
āThere you are! I think Iāve walked nearly this entire hall looking for you.ā
Both you and Lord Jung startle when the sound of a new voice joins the fray. You turn your head to find the King standing in front of you, eyes moving from you to the Royal Guardsman and back. And though there is a smile on his face, it does not quite reach his eyes.
āYour Grace.ā Lord Jung quickly stands to his feet and bows in one fluid motion. You make no move to follow suit with Yeona in your arms, her breaths soft and slow and even at your ear. But you do manage a smile for the King, a weak one, even though both your heart and mind are racing. Even though in some way it feels as though heās interrupted a moment of intimacy.Ā
You wonder if the King feels it, too.
āIāve not seen you all night, Jung,ā Namjoon says pleasantly enough, clapping a hand over the Guardsmanās shoulder. Lord Jung returns Namjoonās smile with an easy one of his own. You watch them both with careful curiosity, searching each manās face for any sign of the tension youād witnessed the other night in the courtyard. You find none, but you cannot be sure if that is because it no longer exists ā or because both are accomplished in the art of diplomacy.
āIāve been milling about,ā Lord Jung explains, gesturing to you. āThis is the first time Iāve seen the Queen since her confinement and I wanted to ask after her. Iām sure you both are quite glad of her recovery.ā
āThat we are,ā the King says. He brushes past Lord Jung to take the manās place on the bench beside you. āThough I suspect Iāve kept her out too late tonight and sheāll need her rest.ā
You nearly open your mouth to protest but decide against it.
āPerhaps itās time for me to retire as well,ā Lord Jung says lightly. āI have an early morning ahead of me with the horses. Itās best I take my leave now and bid a good night to you both.ā
He wastes no time in quickly bowing to you both before turning to leave.
Youāre careful not to watch him go, though the King certainly does. Namjoonās dark eyes follow Lord Jungās steps until he is too far gone into the crowd to spot any longer. Your stomach churns at the expression on your husbandās face, at the dark curiosity in his narrowed eyes and arched brow.
āHeās restless of late,ā the King says under his breath. Though youāve heard him quite clearly, it seems safer somehow to pretend otherwise.
āI beg your pardon, Your Grace?ā
āLord Jung,ā he clarifies, shifting his gaze back to you. āHeās not been himself these last months. Unsettled. Tense, perhaps.ā
Your pulse leaps at your husbandās observation though you cannot be sure if the cause is excitement or fear. Yeona feels like a cinder in your arms now, her little body radiating an uncomfortable warmth against your already heated skin. You feel sweat start to bead at the back of your neck.
āI ā do not know him as well as you do, Your Grace,ā you say slowly, reaching for each word as carefully as fine crystal. āAnd therefore, I am in no position to say. But I trust that you have the right of it.ā
The King strokes a soft hand down Yeonaās back and you hold perfectly still, as though you fear any sudden move will incite him. As though the reserved man youāve been married to for all these months might spring on you like a bear trap if heās managed to discern all the traitorous thoughts youāve entertained.
But your husband does nothing of the sort.Ā
His mouth tilts thoughtfully as he sits back to watch you, babe in arms. And in this picture of you and Yeona together, woman and child, he must see what he believes to be the solution to this dilemma concerning his lifelong friend. That can be the only explanation for what he says next.
āI think Hoseok is in need of a wife.ā
You taste iron in your mouth.

My Dearest Sister ā
It has been some time since your last letter, but I have decided not to be cross. A forgiving spirit is but one of my enviable qualities and thus I have chosen to grant you a modicum of grace.
I write to you today with very exciting news. Iām in love!
His name is Chul and no, he is not of your acquaintance. It has been but three months since he and his father arrived in this village. He is frightfully handsome and best of all, prefers me to all the other young women whoāve been vying for his attention. I am the envy of the lot when we walk together in the evenings and always make sure to take the path closest to Park Myeongās home because I know it vexes her to no end.
Dear Sister, he has asked me to marry him!
And while I suspect Father will be more than happy to see me married off in short order, I am quite certain that Mother will object. Chul is only yet a blacksmithās apprentice but once he completes his training, he will be an expert. And I have no doubt of his ability to provide me with a comfortable life, though it will likely never meet our Motherās exacting standards.
There is something else I must confess before I end this letter, something quite scandalous. And as I am unable to utter a word of this to anyone, I feel as though I might burst if I do not write it down.Ā
A wondrous new world has been opened up to me!
I understand that the private delights enjoyed between a man and woman are nothing new to you, but this discovery has been a rather thrilling one for me. Chul and I are soon to be married and I cannot find good reason to forgo the heady pleasure of an afternoon spent with his hand up my skirts.Ā
I will say no more, lest you faint dead away and someone find this letter next to your body.
I can barely contain my happiness. It feels as though Iām standing at the edge of my old life and preparing to dive into the new. The next time I write you, it will be to announce my formal betrothal and to share the happy news of my wedding plans.Ā
With love,
Chaehee
āļøāļøāļøāļø
You fold the paper in your hands and stare blankly into the fire in the hearth, watching the flames dance as you consider every startling revelation in your sisterās letter. At this very moment you should be seated at your desk, furiously scribbling a stern missive back to your wayward Chaehee and warning her of the ruin that almost certainly lies ahead. But you cannot. You sit in your plush chair immobilized, unable to move or act or think of anything beyond her words.Ā
Happiness. Love. Pleasure.
Your poor sister would be aghast to discover that you know precisely nothing about any of them. That despite your status as a married woman ā a Queen! ā you are no more enlightened on these matters than she is. Probably less so now.
The flames in the hearth are dying by the time you finally manage to lift yourself out of that chair. You drop the letter onto the glowing embers below and watch as the paper burns bright orange and then black.Ā
You watch until the edges curl into themselves and the pieces turn to ash and the fire consumes it whole.
āļøāļøāļøāļø
Love, it would seem, is catching these days.
Your sister is hardly the only one to fall under its spell. Everywhere you look, you see it ā in the kitchens where the cooks titter about their suitors, in the laundry where the washgirls trade heated glances with the butlers. In the halls where a footman and maid break apart when you turn a corner, cheeks flushed and breaths labored as you pass.Ā
Itās as though love is a contagion being carried on the crisp fall air, infecting everyone who breathes it in.
Well, perhaps not everyone.
The King remains unaffected by whatever madness has come over his people. His peculiar interest in you proves to be a fleeting thing, one that wanes as life returns to routine in the days following your illness. You take up your daily morning walks and afternoon excursions to the aviary once again and the King resumes his own afternoon pursuits, vanishing at midday with such punctuality that you wonder if heās actually being timed.
But you cannot find it in yourself to be surprised or even angry at this turn of events. In truth, there is a sense of relief that comes with the respite from your husbandās attentions. Too much time in the presence of the King muddies the waters. And in many ways you find that it is easier to live between clearly drawn lines.
But there are other lines, too. Ones that are far less clear.
Not unlike the neat line of stones that frame the path you are walking this morning. You round the curve that passes close to the stables with a basket in hand, stealing glances from beneath the brim of the hat Hyeri had insisted you wear today. Slowly, the horse pen comes into view.Ā
He comes into view.
It is astonishing that the man can steal your breath like this. That just one glimpse of him ā lean arms crossed over his chest, brow knit in concentration, dark hair falling into his eyes ā is capable of making your pulse quicken.Ā
You find yourself drifting off the neat stone path, body moving of its own volition in the direction of the stables. The ground beneath you, dusty and dry from weeks without rain, crunches loudly beneath your walking boots and Lord Jung turns at the sound.
The slow smile that tugs at the corners of his mouth is enough to make you lightheaded with excitement.Ā
But the sensation vanishes nearly as quickly as it comes on.
āI think Hoseok is in need of a wife.ā
The Kingās words come back to you in that moment, ringing in your ears like the steady clang of a watchtower bell. How much longer will it be before Lord Jung succumbs to the madness thatās taken over this place? How much longer before he announces his betrothal? The man could be in the throes of a grand love affair at this very minute and you would be none the wiser.
The thought makes the blood in your veins turn to ice.
āGood morning, Your Grace,ā he greets kindly from his side of the fence, paying his respects with a deep bow. āThis is a pleasant surprise.ā
A surprise to him perhaps, but not to you. In the days since Lord Jung declared his plans to work in the stables this week, youāve been able to think of little else. And though youād not been entirely certain of your intentions as youād set out for this morningās walk, youād become quite certain of them as soon as youād spotted his lithe frame in the distance.
āGood morning,ā you breathe, damning the blasted hat that forces you to lift your chin in order to see him properly. You raise a hand to your brow to shield your eyes from the sunlight. āI hope you do not mind this disruption. I saw new horses in the pen and could not resist the urge to stop and admire them.ā
Itās a half-truth, of course, though you must admit the horses are quite beautiful. You crane your neck to take a better look at them, a pair of pretty females with small statures and amber coats. One stands patiently still as a stablehand inspects its hooves, the other trots gentle circles around a second man.
āTheyāre good horses,ā Lord Jung says. āDocile demeanors. Fast learners. Nothing like that hellion I worked with last.ā He shakes his head at the memory and you cannot help but smile. āI donāt know that Iāll ever come across another animal quite like him.ā
āWell, thatās probably for the best,ā you laugh and he laughs too, the honeyed sound of it making your heart soar.
āIs this visit made in haste?ā He motions to the basket in your hands and you blink down at it dumbly, as though youād forgotten it was there at all. āOr do you have time to come in and see them for yourself?ā
You drop your head a bit, just enough to allow the brim of your hat to conceal the way you flush with happiness at his invitation.Ā
āIām in no hurry. And I would like that very much.ā
āļøāļøāļøāļø
You stroke the horseās muzzle with an open palm and the animal blinks its huge eyes, tail swaying back and forth in the wind.Ā
She likes you ā even without your knowledge of horses youād be able to discern that from her relaxed stance and the happy sound of her nickering. She keeps her head dropped low and you reward her obedience with a firm scratch behind her ears.
Beside you, Lord Jung works a coarse-bristled brush through the horseās mane, stroking through the strands until they shine. Itās mesmerizing to watch him work, to watch the tendons of his strong forearms strain and the muscles ripple beneath his golden skin.
āSheās comfortable with you.ā
He doesnāt take his eyes off the steady work of his hands, but your skin prickles with awareness at his casual observation. It makes you wonder what else he has taken note of when youāve assumed his attention has been elsewhere.
āAnd I with her,ā you return, patting the animalās strong neck. āShe reminds me of my mare back home.ā
āOh?ā
āNot in her appearance exactly,ā you explain, āBut in her temperament. She has a very sweet spirit.ā
āThat she does,ā Lord Jung agrees, dropping the brush into a bucket at his feet. He reaches into his pocket to produce a small oat cake, a reward for the animalās obedience which the horse is quick to accept.
āWhat is her name?ā
āShe doesnāt have one,ā he admits, lips pursing thoughtfully. āI donāt think the King intends to keep her. I expect that he will sell them both in order to acquire a more powerful horse. One better suited to heavy labor.ā
āWhat a shame,ā you say under your breath, hand coming to rest on the bridge of the horseās nose. She nudges you with it, urging you to resume your attentions and you oblige with a sad smile. āNot fair is it, girl? Being cast aside like that.āĀ
Lord Jung is quiet for a moment, long enough that you lift your head to search for him and find him already looking at you. There is something stormy swirling in his dark gaze. He quickly averts it to look away in the direction of the castle and you watch with careful curiosity as he drags a hand down his jaw before turning back to you.
āThereās a creek in the woods behind me. Do you know it?ā
āI do,ā you say slowly, uncertainty flooding your bloodstream.Ā
āDo you know how to get to the mouth of it?ā
āYes,ā you admit, heart starting to beat double-time. āI do.ā
āWill you meet me there tomorrow? In the afternoon. At the time you would normally visit the aviary.ā
At best, the proposition is improper ā and at worst, scandalous. You know very well that no married woman of good standing should ever agree to a clandestine encounter with a man who is not her husband.Ā
But still you answer without hesitation.
āYes,ā you whisper. āI will.ā
āļøāļøāļøāļø
Try as you might, sleep will not come.
You lie in the dark for what feels like an eternity, imagining shapes in the shadows cast overhead. Your entire body tingles with a nervous energy that makes it impossible to lie still or allow your mind to rest. So you toss and turn ā until your bedding becomes a mess and your sheets become impossibly tangled about your limbs. Until you have no choice but to abandon the endeavor entirely and decide to shake off your blankets and climb out of bed.
You grab your shawl and sink into the chair beside the fire, pensive as you watch the embers dim and cool.
Somewhere in the belly of the hearth at your feet lies the remnants of Chaeheeās letter. The pages are little more than ash and soot by now, surely, but the words inscribed on them remain seared into your heart and mind. Impulsive as she can be ā reckless as she can be ā your brave little sister has still managed to secure the things you covet most in this life.
Happiness. Love. Pleasure.
They all have it, donāt they? The cooks and the washgirls and the maids. They flit about this castle like doves, preening as they exchange knowing smiles. All partaking together in some grand shared secret while you remain grounded, tethered by decorum and duty.
Well, no more.
Youāll not spend one more moment sitting idly by as the women around you do exactly as they please, paying no mind to the rules that have dictated every circumstance in your life. Youāll not devote another ounce of your energy to resenting anyone fearless enough to do the things youāve always been too timid to attempt.Ā
So you tiptoe back to bed, as though any errant sound might bring every servant in the castle running to your chamber.Ā
You peel back the duvet and burrow back into your bedding, heart pounding in your ears. And then you slide one unsteady hand beneath the gauzy material of your nightgown and down to the apex of your thighs. Then you touch yourself ā there ā with a light press of your open palm.
Nothing happens.Ā
So you do it again ā firmer ā spreading your legs a bit wider and feeling for the hidden place that has produced an unexpected shock of sensation for you before.Ā
Nothing happens.
But you keep pressing. Again and again and again until your hips start to move of their own accord. You keep pressing until you feel a strange pulse there, the steady motion earning you an enticing friction that comes each time you rock against the heel of your hand.
You keep pressing and rocking until the feeling becomes a pleasant ache between your thighs, as frustrating as it is fascinating. Because though you find the sensation agreeable, it is nothing like what Chaehee had described to you so long ago. And though you can feel it ā the promise of something more ā you have no idea how to harness it.Ā
You have no understanding of what comes next or how to make it more.
Eventually you have no choice but to abandon that endeavor too, limbs and eyelids heavy when sleep finally comes for you. And when you submit to it, finally allow it to pull you under, your very last thought is that you will try again.Ā
You must.
āļøāļøāļøāļø
āIs the meal not to your liking, Your Grace?ā
Hyeri lifts one thin gray eyebrow as she fixes you with a strange look from across the table. She nudges the plate in front of you and you blink, rousing from your daze.Ā
The food is perfectly to your liking actually, the smell of the sugared toast and eggs enticing enough to make your mouth water. But your stomach is wildly unsettled this morning, already roiling beneath your skirts at the thought of seeing Lord Jung and you fear partaking in more than just a few bites of food will cause you to retch.
āNo, no, not at all,ā you shake your head as you collect your thoughts. āIt looks delicious. But my stomach feels a bit weak this morning and I would rather not test it.ā
āYouāre not feeling poorly again, are you?ā Hyeri asks, frowning as she reaches for the glass jar of jam between you. āPerhaps you ought to stay in bed today, allow your body to rest.ā
āNo.ā The word flies out of your mouth with much more force and much more volume than youād intended. Hyeriās eyes narrow as she nibbles at the corner of a toast point.
āThereās something curious about you this morning, Your Grace,ā she says slyly. āYou woke up with your head in the clouds and now youāre as skittish as a colt. Is there something afoot you need to tell me about?ā
A self-conscious heat rises to your cheeks. āOf course not,ā you sniff.
But the skeptical look on Hyeriās face remains intact. āYou look well,ā she murmurs, as though assessing the veracity of your claim to good health. Her eyes rake down the pretty walking dress youād selected for today, one of your best. āYou look very well, actually.ā
Oh, you must leave this chamber at once.Ā
When Hyeri looks at you like this, you feel as transparent as a pane of glass. The porcelain plates and cups on top of the table rattle as you quickly get to your feet.
āYou are far too kind to me, Hyeri,ā you say, careful to avoid direct contact with her as you gather your shawl and basket. āTruly. And I think a morning walk is just the thing to improve my appetite.ā
āBut ā ā
ā ā I have a very busy day planned,ā you say, ignoring Hyeriās half-hearted objections as you hurry towards the chamber door. āAnd I may decide to visit with the Min girls, as well,ā you lie, grateful to have your back turned towards your handmaid.
āBut ā ā
You fling the heavy door open and briefly turn in the threshold, just long enough to see Hyeriās wide eyes and slack jaw.
āDonāt wait for me!ā you insist, forcing a wide smile. āIāll return before dinner tonight.ā
āļøāļøāļøāļø
You spend what remains of your morning in the aviary, alternating between attempting to read the book in your hands and staring up at the birds overhead, lost in thought.
What does Lord Jung want with you?
Contemplating the answer to that question is thrilling and terrifying in equal measure. You are in many ways ā too many ways ā still quite naive about the ways of men. Is he simply extending you a kindness or is there something more? The very prospect is fraught with danger.
But not even the risk of ruin is enough to stop you from seeking him out. And when the agreed-upon time for your rendezvous finally arrives, not even the threat of being discovered in a secret meeting with a man who is not your husband is enough to keep you away.
So you go to him ā one careful step at a time, hiking your skirts to step over the roots dotted across the forest floor.Ā
As you walk, a flash of movement catches your eye and you squint at it through the thinning trees. It starts to take shape as you near, the amber color of it sparking a realization in your mind.
A horse. No ā horses.
Both animals come into view as you step into the clearing ā the pretty mare from the stables secured to one tree and the Kingās magnificent warhorse to another. Lord Jung stands at the warhorseās side, his delicate mouth curved into a devastating smile.
āYour Grace.āĀ He dips into his customary bow and you nod, incredulous as you take in the entire scene. āI thought you might like to go for a ride.ā
Oh, but you would. In fact, your pulse leaps with excitement at the very suggestion. But you look down at your fine walking dress and sigh. āI would love to, truly. But Iām not dressed to ride.ā
āIf you think me capable of spiriting away both a pair of horses and a set of riding clothes, Iām afraid youāve overestimated my abilities,ā Lord Jung teases, causing heat to creep up the line of your back. āBut the decision is entirely up to you.ā
You silently scold yourself for voicing your hesitation out loud. This man has gone out of his way to offer you this opportunity, one youāve craved since the moment you stepped foot on the Kingās land.Ā
You want to go. You will go.Ā
āWell, I ā ā you flush a bit as you gesture at the amber mare, then down to your long skirts. ā-- Iāll need some help getting onto her, you see.ā
Lord Jungās dark eyes crinkle with amusement.
āYes, of course.ā
āļøāļøāļøāļø
The ride is glorious.Ā
Youāll be saddle sore tomorrow, no doubt, but today you can only think of how free you feel riding on top of your amber mare. Sheās an ideal mount for you, both in size and demeanor and you find that she follows your cues exceptionally well.
You follow Lord Jungās lead through parts of the Kingdom youāve never seen before ā green hills and rolling fields dotted with wildflowers. And when you arrive at a particularly open stretch of land, you urge your mount to move faster and she complies, taking you from an easy trot to a gallop with surprising speed.Ā
But soon ā far too soon ā itās time to rest the horses.
Lord Jung helps you down from your mount, his hands firm about your waist as he carefully sets you on the ground. Surely it is only your imagination that he holds you just a bit too close and for just a bit too long. You breathe him in ā take in his masculine scent of leather and sweat.Ā
Being this close to the man scrambles your wits.
You let go of a breath when he breaks away from you to rifle through the contents of his bag. Within moments, he produces a skin of water and two apples, one of which you happily accept as the two of you sit down amongst the wildflowers to rest.
āThis has been a wonderful afternoon, My Lord,ā you say genuinely. āI hadnāt realized just how much I missed riding.ā
āYouāre good at it,ā he compliments kindly, tipping his head back to take a drink. āAnd the two of you pair well together. She responds to you quite naturally.ā
āYes, I believe she does,ā you agree, looking over your shoulder to where both horses are tethered. āAnd Jeonsa? He seems to do quite well with you. Is he biddable for the King, as well?ā
Lord Jung puts on an amused expression and shakes his head.
āThe relationship between horse and rider is a bit like courtship. Letās just say the King has a bit more courting to do.ā
The two of you share a laugh.Ā
āThank you My Lord,ā you say after a while, āTruly, for all of this. I donāt know that anyone has ever gone to such trouble for me.ā
Lord Jungās dark eyes snap up to meet yours. Thereās something puzzling about his gaze, something entirely at odds with your sincere statement of thanks.Ā
āI wonder if I might ask you something of a personal nature, Your Grace.ā
Your nails immediately curl into the fine material of your skirts, the pressure turning your knuckles white. But you are careful to keep your expression calm.
āYes of course,ā you say with a strained laugh. āThough I may decide not to divulge my answer.ā
He looks away from you then, reaching for a long blade of grass at his feet. His expression inscrutable as he plucks it and begins to worry the blade between his fingers.
āAre you unhappy here?ā
You take in a sharp breath. The question is far too personal, far too intimate to be proper in any way. But you find yourself answering it ā truthfully ā because heās caught you so off guard you have no choice but to respond with candor.
āSome days,ā you admit quietly. āBut not today.ā
Lord Jung says nothing for a while and the blade of grass between his fingers eventually breaks apart. He throws it down and reaches for another.
āThe King is by no means perfect, Your Grace,ā he starts, pausing as though heās giving great thought to each word. āBut he is a brother to me in all but blood. Iāve spent the better part of my life at his side. Heās a good man.ā
The hairs at the nape of your neck stand on end.
Is this why heās brought you here today? To make a case on behalf of the King? Your cheeks heat at the thought of every silly notion youād entertained otherwise.
āDid he ask you to do this?ā you demand, āDid he tell you to speak to me?ā
āNo.ā His answer is firm, immediate. āNo, I swear it. But I know that you have been unhappy since coming here and I just ask that you give His Grace a chance to make things right.ā
Youāll hear none of it. The magic of the afternoon is gone now, the entire outing tainted by this tense exchange. By this reminder that Lord Jungās loyalties lie with your husband, and that any kindness heās shown you is little more than an extension of his service to the King.Ā
What a fool youāve been.Ā
āYou neednāt defend the King,ā you say tightly, getting to your feet and dusting your hands off on your skirts. āI assure you, he has no shortage of people to come to his defense. And I think we should go now.ā
āYour Grace, ā Lord Jung is on his feet now, too. āBy no means would I ever want to upset you.ā
Itās far too late for that, you think ā the disappointment so acute it makes you want to double over. You turn your back to him and stalk off towards your mount, blinking back the angry tears that threaten.
āIām not explaining myself well,ā he insists, following you and taking firm hold of your arm.Ā He turns you to face him. āI mean only to say that I know the King to be a good man. But even good men are weak to certain temptations.ā
āAnd you, Lord Jung?āĀ
You challenge him without thinking, the words flying out of your mouth before you can stop them. āWhat temptation are you weak to?ā
The manās dark eyes glint dangerously as he regards you for a moment, jaw tight.
āYouāre right, Your Grace,ā he says at last. āItās time to go.ā
thank you thank you thank you for reading this story. i'd love to hear what you thought and you can find me here ššš

Someone PUHLEASE send this screenplay to Netflix... Like, NOW. I say this in full honesty. And not just the lead protagonist. Nuh-uh. ALLUVM. My heart pangs for all of them.Ā

You looked at your friend and colleague. Taehyung was so earnest, his eyes so soulful and deep. He was hard to look at without your heart squeezing tighter.

Yesterday, I wrote about a post about the whitewashing that can happen in BTS fanfics and why we need POC writers in general - and in the BTS fandom. Today, I have a post with more than 60 BTS fanfic authors of color. Shout out to the Possums,Ā @bangtanbathhouse-main, and my other moots for their help.Ā

The beauty of such a large and diverse BTS fandom is that there are so many talented ARMY authors in our fanfic communities. As I mentioned in my post about how whitewashed BTS fanfics can be, I get especially happy when I come across fellow POC writers. Thanks to my own reading and networks of BTS friends and writers, Iāve compiled a list of BTS fanfic writers of color as a jumping off point to explore more POC authors and content creators.
If you are a writer of color and I did not include you (or didnāt rec a fic of yours), itās nothing personal. Sometimes, I donāt know if writers identify as POC or I just havenāt come across your fics yet. Feel free to comment with your handles and a fic to check out and I will try to add you or update when I get a chance (and if I donāt, at least it will be in the comments once the comment itself is approved or moderated).
Read more >>> (leads to my site and not tumblr)
I will try to tag as many of the writers as possible on the tumblr but I apologize if I miss you.
I canāt believe I was included in a list as epic as this. š³ I am forever in awe of this woman and pretty much THIS ENTIRE GROUP OF AWESOMENESS. ššš¾š@vyduan #herestoanewyear #newstories #newadventures and #newperspectives #startafreshconversation š¤š„°

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: I have zero clue WTF I'm doing. I have never been to South Korea-- SO! All the places, references and pretty much everything in this hot mess of a daydream is to be taken as FANTASY. Non-reality based, peoples. Secondly, I would like to say that a lot of the material and conversations and opinions you'll find in these pages have been pulled from my last relationship (8 years with a Korean man- SK born but definitely American as all get out) and my ongoing friendships with his family members both living here and there. I just ask them random ass questions and try my best to not let on that i'm asking for BTS fan fic purposes... cause I would never hear the end of it. Big shout outs to my besties @vyduan and @inkbluelily for pumping me with constant encouragement and hyping me up to do the impossible... actually post. ]
---------- Flashback to the beginning, Two years ago --
Navigating the streets in Seoul had finally started to become second nature.
Thank goodness.
Working up the guts to approach a local and ask for help had always tended to be hit or miss. Either people feigned not being able to understand your Korean, pretended to not know any English (though you had heard them speaking it just seconds before) or they completely ignored your pleas for help and started asking you a dozen rapid fire questions about your hair.
So many hair questions.
It's a constant thing here.
You understand the curiosity. Your curls are on point and frankly, pretty damn fabulous. But people apparently have a negative grasp on the concept of personal space when it comes to foreigners, yet they heed to the utmost levels of hesitation and bodily respect when it comes to physical contact with one another.
But a black girl trying to find the shoe repair shop thatās supposed to be on the corner?
What do her boundaries matter?
One second it's "Oh! You're so dark!" and then that phrase is (9 times out of 10) immediately followed by a darting hand grasping for those shiny springs of kinky wonder and magic.
Youāre used to it. No offense taken because⦠let's be real. You would be offended all the time if you let silly things like their inquisitiveness get to you like that.
And the people here always seem so shocked when they realize youāre able to speak a bit of their language. You assume itās mostly because they realize that you can understand what theyāve been saying about you in front of your face. Some apologize. Some donāt. Some just politely backpedal and compliment you for attempting to learn Korean at all.
Youāre not by any means fluent just yet. Youāve got the basic Seoul dialect pronunciation down but still have a terrible grasp of the grammar structure... but, hey.
At least you try.
----------
You crossed the last congested intersection, a smile stretching across your face while (not) blending in with the flock of despondent souls en route to start the work day. You all, like bees in a swarm, buzzed through the landscaped courtyard, past the lunch stands prepping their menus and tents for service in the afternoon. You, in your merry mood, took a moment to beam up at the massive (and massively intimidating) building that stretched skyward in front of you.
You were lucky enough to have been offered a position as a production assistant at KBSMedia around eleven months ago. It's afforded you opportunities that you could only have dreamed of back home stateside. At the price of your loneliness? Totally, but still very much worth it in the long run. Youāve met countless Korean celebrities, idols, been a part of the crew for two hit drama programs and now, (a drumroll seems fitting here--) finally.
This glorious, low dust and pollutant filled air-quality morning marks day one of a new chapter for both your career and your status within the company ranks.
It's almost unheard of.
Seriously. Itās maybe the second or third time in Korean broadcasting history. You still get a little choked up at the thought of it all.
Today is the day in which you will take a rightfully-earned, long-awaited and over-due, monumental first step on that path leading to a place in front of a camera lens and into the spotlight.
You.
A [COUGH] relatively young, black, American woman.
Here.
In one of the palest countries a person could possibly imagine.
Halfway--
No.
Literally on the other side of the planet.
When the network gave the āOKā for your director's "out of left field" idea to cast you (he personally delivered the news to you with many air quotes and hand gestures) in this thought provoking, meticulously scripted and groundbreaking role⦠to say that you were shocked would be the understatement of the century.
All the same, you were beyond grateful for the opportunity and more than ready.
Ready to play the best damn "comic-relief roommate of the female lead who basically only says 'Annyeonghaseyo' from the apartment couch, usually with an absurd amount of food in her mouth, providing visual gags with charm and conveying affection and friendly support for the main character" that the South Korean film industry has ever seen.
You even get to improv.
In your pocket are two degrees to backup your talent. You majored in Theatre (with a concentration in Acting) and then continued your graduate studies while pursuing your dreams in New York and rotating through multiple (expensive) performance and film classes.
Cliche.
You are aware.
How youāve ended up doing so much dang production work, youāre not one hundred percent sure. You had come to realize after hearing "No, but thank you for your time today" so much that that must just be the nature of the business in the most competitive audition field in entertainment.
They say, āYou get in where you fit in and you fake it till you make itā.
Even if that mantra takes you across the globe.

"Annyeong, ____-ah! How was your weekend?"
"Lonesome but productive. Just studied at home and dreamt about all the chicken and beer nights Iām going to miss at your place from now on. Iām pretty much off book, though. So, thereās that,ā you shrugged and smiled with a wiggle of your dark brows. āHow's she coming along, ah jeo-ssi?"
This āolderā man, your friend, was the single nicest soul at KBS.
Seung Woo was the daytime front desk security guard. He prefers the term security agent so the position sounds more stealthy and cool. He likes to give off a Bond vibe while working and wears a full suit most days. Steamed creases and all, courtesy of his wife.
It is not required for him to be this extra, thatās for sure.
But this guy, right here? He knows just about every employee in the building. Just like the classic, dashing spy would in a blockbuster movie. He sees all. Knows all. Only really likes a few of these āshow-bizā types that pass him by without so much as giving him eye contact (which is how you bonded) but for some reason he took to taking care of you like an uncle, more so than a big brother.
Itās sweet considering if you were back in America you would be considered practically the same age, but here at work? You love getting to use the formal honorifics. You can tell he appreciates the respect.
Though, when off the clock he will enforce the āoppaā card.
Which you enjoy far less.
Because cringe.
He only bests you by a few years. He recently turned 34, but itās 35 when tracking his life span the Korean way.
Youāre turning 31 this fall.
And thatās a good, old-fashioned (or possibly āgood new-fashionedā, because honestly? What the hell do you know? Youāre still just a kid in the grand scheme of things if you consider the current average life expectancy of an active, healthy, non-smoking, adult female like yourself...)
So, yeah. The point? Right.
Youāre turning a plain olā, solid, traditional for the western hemisphere, starting post-utero, only counting from your first breath, ādonāt anyone dare think about adding an extra digit to your years if they value having all of their teeth and toesā-- 31.
Youāre clinging to your youth with all youāve got. Both hands. Maybe your thighs too. You werenāt blessed with this melanin-infused baby face for nothing.
And you were grateful for Seung Wooās face, just the same. When you started, there was a good stretch when he was the only smile youād come across until it was time to clock out and head home to FaceTime with your family. Youāve had a friendly banter going ever since your first day when you swiped your ID for clearance through the shiny turnstiles. Youāve been helping him and his partner learn more English in exchange for the daily lessons on how to survive in this building and in this country. You would've given up here long ago if not for his advice and their friendship.
"She's getting bigger by the second. Look," he said and deftly whipped his phone out of it's holster on his hip to show off his wonderfully pregnant spouse.
Yea, he really uses one of those belt clips. The last time you saw one was on your father.
Despite this fashion faux pas, Seung Woo was still handsome as all get-out and a total DILF in the making.
His wife, Chaeyeong, was a former idol who fell for his charismatic smile and bashful eyes whenever she had a schedule at the studios. She had been caught making eyes at him by a photog one too many times (aka, one time) and when her group's contract was up for renewal, she and her company āmutually decided to part ways so that she could pursue other endeavors outside of the pressures from the spotlight that comes with idoldomā.
Or at least that was the story DSPās PR team came up with in the statement they dropped to the media. In reality, they didnāt want to bother dealing with the dating rumors and Chae didnāt think staying was worth an innocent man with a beautiful heart being dragged through the mud by netizens. So, she jumped ship and went for it. Now, sheās one of the co-hosts on a variety program where they dish out love advice to viewers and sheās been embraced by (most of) the public for following her heart.
While she may be widely considered the prize of the pair to the untrained eye, personally, you think she's a smart young lady for taking him off the market.
Because that man treats her like a queen.
"She's simply radiant, Seung Woo-ssi."
"Thanks, I know,ā he said, clipping his phone back into place. āWe couldn't handle it anymore and we found out the gender Saturday. I wanted to tell you in person."
"We couldnāt handle it?ā you snickered.
āFine. Me.ā
āThere you go,ā you nodded and smacked his back affectionately. āYou made it to 8 months. Honestly, Iām shocked."
This was how you guys worked.
He laughed, ignoring your snide tone, not the least bit put off by your jab about his lack of patience. It was an indisputable fact. You prompted him to continue with a light tap to his arm. "Well?"
His exuberance shined all the way up to his glistening eyes and it felt as though it would burst through the top of his head like the bat signal.
He truly beamed. It was almost blinding.
"Really? Itās a boy?!"
"I could cry!" Seung Woo was unable to contain himself, his body bobbing on the balls of his feet. Any more force and he would actually be jumping for joy, if you will. It was disgustingly cute. He had been praying their first child would be a boy.
Most men over here seem to want male heirs.
āCould cry?ā you gave him a look of disbelief, grinning.
He met your eyes. There was no way he could hold out. His whole body sighed in defeat.
āI did cry.ā
āThat all?ā
You placed your hands on each of his shoulders to pull him down closer for inspection. You leaned in towards his face with your dark eyes, sharp as a blade, cutting him deep for the real story.
Which you basically had the gist of already. There were many texts from Chae earlier this morning requesting that you keep an eye on her emotional hubby and asking you for confirmation that he was okay once you spoke to him. She was careful not to spoil the news of the appointment. Though Chaeyeong was your friend too, she knew this would be something that he would want to share with you first.
āOk, fine. So, I cried. A lot. Aish, I couldnāt stop crying. I cried like a baby. Snotty gross crying. All weekend. At the drop of hat ever since we found out. I couldnāt even start the car leaving the doctorās and Chae-Chae had to drive us home from the office. She made me take the bus today to be safe because she didnāt trust me to not break down in traffic if a stroller passed me at a stoplight. I only just pulled myself together a few hou-- minutes ago before you got here after sobbing at the bus stop, sobbing at the breakfast truck, sobbing at my locker and sobbing in the bathroom. I had to run out before the team pre-shift meeting because-- surprise, surprise!-- I was a mess when Hee-hyung brought up his sonās birthday party yesterday. Iāve had to go back to the bathroom twice since then just because a baby in overalls and a shark hat was carried by the desk. Iām doing my best with every breath that I take not to scream it out at the top of my lungs that my beautiful wife that I donāt deserve is giving me a son and I feel like the king of the world!! Happy?!ā
Seung Woo inhaled deeply and you snorted and clapped your hands.
"CONGRATULATIONS!!"
He let out a sort of squeal-like sound at that and the two of you bounced together in a tiny circle, your celebration possibly a little bit too buoyant for the employees passing by you, drawing attention and some passersby grimacing in your direction. Remembering your place, you broke apart, him coughing into his fist to cover his proud simper and you took to readjusting his jacket and tie.
"I can't wait to come down later and chat but I can't be late today,ā you said as you brushed his shoulder off and then pounded that fist that he was now stretching out to you.
āYouāre going to kill it, ____-ah.ā
āThanks, Woo-ssi. Oh, and I definitely want a copy of that new ultrasound for my refrigerator!" you stage-whispered loudly to him as you took a blind step back and then started to skip backwards towards the parallel lines of elevators. The lobby around you was noticeably more clear than just a few moments ago. Seung Woo was deep in his own world, pulling out his wallet to stare at the black and white blob of a photo of his unborn.
You paused to watch him fondly before skipping backwards some more.
"We need to take a picture of all three of us, you know. Or I guess now itās four!!--ā
Man down.
Well⦠"Woman down".
Wait--
Nope. "Man down", too.
You had taken a hostage to the floor with you and he was trapped under your flailing limbs and coif of curls.
"OH! Oh my God, Iām sorry! Iām so sorry!" you stammered over and over as you attempted dismounting the lap of the man you had fallen on top of so gracefully.
Obviously, that is a lie.
There was nothing graceful about this moment.
"I'm so sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going and I was just so excited for my friend and--"
A set of hands gripped your waist tightly to steady you and before you could register that they were connected to the person beneath you, Seung Woo's arms were under your own and helping to lift you onto your feet.
Once up on your shaking stems, you immediately hitched your body into a bow towards the gentleman on the marble tile.
This was embarrassing.
And awkward.
You were all of the āawkwardā.
All of it.
Every little bit of what comes together to define that which is āawkwardā?
Thatās you.
Right now.
And your anxiety will probably never let you forget it.
Youāll be at your wedding about to say āI doā-- or maybe this will leave you shook when youāre cutting your cake and you drop a chunk of buttercream on the floor-- so you look down to make sure you missed your dress-- and thatās when you notice the fake marble dance floor sticker tiles and they look just like this floor that youāre staring at right now-- but your fiance had insisted on them because heās a āclassy guy but cheapā and the vendor gave you a discount because he was Korean and you could speak his language fairly well-- he was actually a really nice guy-- but youāll see it and panic-- and so you close your eyes and have a PTSD-like flashback of these painful minutes-- but when you squeeze your eyes tighter to clear the images everything is suddenly moving in slo-mo-- and now youāre back to when you were 30 and thriving and living in a foreign country-- and your big, dumb ass just had to knock down an innocent stranger-- and youāll remember rendering him paralyzed, mute and deaf in his left ear from the concussive impact of his head smacking that cold, hard floor-- which led you to losing your work visa, your chance at an acting career, and you were thrown in jail before being shipped back to the United States in a packing crate in the luggage hull of an airplane-- next to a gassy dog and what you think was an unmarked box of snakes⦠on a plane.
Or much later in life, youāre going to be old and gray-- but probably with no wrinkles because you never had a reason to smile after this-- and youāll probably be in a cheap and poorly rated nursing home-- with no friends or family who care about you left in the world-- eating questionable cream of corn soup that is neither sweet nor salty-- just no flavor at all-- and itās definitely not supposed to be green-- and your teeth will be in a cup on the nightstand next to both your hot pink and your purple SMTWTFS pill popper packs that are stuffed with enough meds to kill a giraffe-- and the nurse on meal service will have forgotten your lime jello and cup of ice AGAIN-- and you will STILL be able to feel the tightness in your chest from this amount of awkward embarrassment that youāre currently feeling in this moment-- and you will STILL be able to replay this memory on repeat in your mind like it happened hours and not years ago-- and it will be in full 186,405K resolution-- which is quadruple HD clarity⦠because that will be a thing by then.
And when your time comes and you think you can finally be rid of this memory, youāll be born again-- and youāll be plagued with flashes of this moment in your dreams in your next life-- and you wonāt recognize the faces in the scene but youāll for HELLA SURE know that that shit looked embarrassing as fuck-- and youāll probably pay for lots of therapy trying to deal with the nightmares-- until you give up and try to recreate the dream-- and then the cycle of trauma will start again.
Ahem.
Very visibly trembling, you dropped to your knees and clasped your hands in front of you, bending your forehead down to meet them. You couldn't bring yourself to make eye contact with the face of your victim. Itās not like you would have been able to see him from your current angle even if you did look up, what-- with all of your hair blocking your view, but still you didnāt dare.
You heard what you assumed were his hands dusting himself off as his companions helped him up off of the floor. They were all chuckling while looking him over to make sure he was alright. You only had a sliver sized peek of multiple sneakers, some bulky ass boots and loafers with the ownerās heels hanging out, ruining the back of the expensive looking shoes.
That should be considered a crime, even if your feet do look that smooth.
"I can't believe-- I'm so sorry! I'm such an idiot. It'll never happen again. I'll watch where I'm going and be more careful, I swear! I'm so very, very sorry!ā you apologized as a man stepped between you and the small crowd of people. You stared at the tile with fear-filled, wide eyes and could almost feel his shadow that cast over you. It matched your darkened spirits that were sending you into a spiral of panic.
You peeked up at the man and stuttered at the sheer width of him. He was wearing all black (or at least his pants, shoes and socks) and he was much larger than you. Very much larger than you. āIs- is he hurt? Oh god, I'll g-get a medic and I can pay for the b-bill. It's the least I should do, right?ā
Receiving no response more than his unreadable face, you righted yourself up on to your knees and with a flip, tamed your curls out of your vision, smoothing them back into what you hoped was a presentable style. You contemplated what was going to come of you while fixing the neckline of your blouse and then rubbed your hands nervously over your thighs. You were still unable to see past the man in front of you, as his thighs were in your direct line of sight and thick as hell.
You looked up at him the way you had as a child while awaiting punishment in Catholic School, and he mirrored Sister Agnesā scowl down upon you to a tee. There was no wooden ruler rapping against his palm. So, with scant confidence in your muscles to assist you, you instead rose from the floor aided by Seung Wooās shaky hand.
He mustāve been thrown by the accident as well. For a guy trained and trusted to protect and defend people in a crisis, heās got the nerves of a mouse.
Broad, RBF-man then turned, giving you his back and you read āSECURITYā across his jacket. You stilled in place from his profile as he glared at you over his shoulder and scoffed with a tilt up of his sharp chin.
Hold up. Was that āin disgustā? Seriously?
In your heels you were still a few inches shy of being able to see over this wall of a man as he spat a curse at you.
āYah, this wasnāt assault or anything. Just an accident,ā you looked up in distress, holding your one elbow while the hand of that cradled arm palmed the side of your face. You rolled your eyes and rubbed your temple. āWho is this guy, Woo-ssi?ā
He didnāt answer. He was holding his radio earpiece, listening to a call. More than likely about the commotion you had caused. This was not what you needed before your big day. It felt like a bad omen.
āDid I break something, sir? I can drive you to the hospital!ā you cupped your hands around your mouth to project past the linebacker blocking you and over the murmur of multiple voices.
āOppa, I'll need to borrow your car or-- Ah, shit! Of all days for you to take the bus,ā you groaned and rubbed both temples.
You whipped your head to Seung Woo as he gasped.
āWhat? Iām sorry. I was just kidding,ā you said as he nodded along to his com. āThat was rude of me.ā
Having been facing you during the majority of this time, making sure that you were alright and then waving along the nominal foot traffic, Seung Woo redirected his attention to the crowd behind him. He let go of his ear-piece and started to shake his head back and forth rapidly, his face and neck paling. He clasped a palm tightly to his mouth.
āI was in the bathroom crying. I missed the briefingā¦ā he mumbled through his fingers.
āBriefing?ā
āIām sorry, ____-ah. Donāt hit me later, please.ā
āNo, Iām the one whoās sorry. I swear, Iām sorry-- Iām sorry-- Iām sorry-- Iām sorry to everyone!!"
"Please stop apologizing."
That voice was new.
There were giggles.
Male giggles.
āAnd for the love of God-- HYUNG! Iām fine. Stop touching my pants. Cut it out already, guys.ā
That voice.
You knew that voice.
You had heard it somewhere, at least a million times before, you were sure, but you couldn't pinpoint exactly from where. You hesitantly took a step towards the MIB in front of you just as his figure took a step to the side.

Summary: You're home for the holidays, hungover as fuck, and can't remember what you did last night. Luckily, your little brother Jungkook and his friends Taehyung and Jimin are all too happy to remind you!
A/N: My beloved Bloobs asked sent me a very inspiring ask a few days ago, and I couldn't get it out of my head. The whole thing is here, but it starts: "Baby bro JK is back at it again. He takes you out to the bar with his friends while you're in town. You think its going to be you just babysitting the maknaes but they make sure you get your fill (and more) of shots. They do mean well but also just want to be little shits knowing good and well your childhood crushes will also be there that night." I couldn't stop laughing at her scenarios, and that led to this. This is for you, Bloobs! Thank you for always sharing your wild ideas with me. š
Unbeta'd of course. If you like this nonsense, please let me know - my inbox is always open!
When you wake up Saturday morning, you become aware of two things.
The first is that you're in pain. Your head is splitting, throat sore, body aching like you ran a marathon. But you're no runner. What did you do last night?
The second is there's a face hovering above yours, smiling creepily.
"Fuck!" you yelp, shrinking back against the couch cushions. Couch cushions? Why were you sleeping on the couch? "Taehyung! What the fuck are you doing?"
Your little brother's best friend rests his chin on his hand on the back of the couch. "Good morning, noona! We were wondering when you'd wake up."
"We?" You roll over to see Jimin sitting in your parents' armchair, legs slung over the arm. He gives you a polite wave.
"Why the fuck are you two here so early?" you ask, sitting up and stretching.
"It's almost one, noona," your little brother announces as he sets a plate of fried eggs and kimchi toast in front of you, with a steaming mug of coffee. āEat this. Itāll help.ā
You don't know how you lucked out, getting a brother as sweet as Jungkook.
"Itās almost one? ....fuck." You tuck into your breakfast.
Taehyung plops himself down on the other end of the couch. "So, exactly how much do you remember about last night?"
Uh-oh. You cast your mind back, trying to remember the previous night's events. Youād come home for the holidays, only for your parents to announce they were heading out of town on a ālate honeymoonā cruise. With no parents to visit, you had no plans, so youād turned to your brother for entertainment. Jungkook had begged you to go to the Pied Piper with him and his friends, claiming they'd missed you since you were last home. As much as Taehyung and Jimin annoyed you with their mischievous antics, you also had a soft spot for them and agreed to go.
At the bar, the boys had plied you with shot after shot after shot. Clearly, you hadn't turned down a single one, because as you sat there, inhaling your food, you couldn't recall most of the night. At some point it went from sitting around giggling with the trio to an absolute blur.
"Uh? Honestly, not much? I know we were at the bar, and drinking, and then I woke up here."
"That's probably for the best," your brother pipes up from his spot on the floor. "Did you have any plans for the rest of the weekend? Because you might want to cancel them. Lay low for a bit."
"Oh god. Why? What did I do?"
"LET'S GO TO THE VIDEOTAPE!" Taehyung booms.
"The what?"
Jimin whips out his phone, swiping like mad, and suddenly a face pops onto the giant tv hanging on your parents' wall. Your face. You recoil as the unflattering closeup zooms out slightly, revealing you sitting at the bar, drunk as a skunk, leaning on Kim Seojkin.
"Jin!" you shout in surprise. Holy shit, you hadn't seen your friend in years. Well, your friend with benefits, technically, as Jin was the one you used to turn to during summer breaks from college whenever you felt that itch.
"Shhh, you're missing the story!" Taehyung hisses.
As Jimin pumps up the volume, you hear Video You talking to Jin and the bartender. Not really talking so much as loudly slurring, really. "You know how they say fuck like rabbits? More like turtles! I just laid there and screamed his name. Idiot thought I really came! That's what happens when you only have relations with your vacuum."
"Oh my god," you murmur. "What am I saying?"
Taehyung turns to you with a grin. "I believe Jin was talking about his reputation as Worldwide Handsome, putting the moves on the bartender, and you decided to be his wingman."
"You're a real shit wingman," Jungkook adds, and you lob a throw pillow at him as Video You continues.
"Ahahaha, she's such a kidder, this one!" Jin cuts you off in the video, throwing an arm around you in an attempt to physically stop you from talking. But you are undeterred. You need to tell this pretty bartender what exactly she should expect from your former fuck buddy.
"So, anyway, I'm on my knees, working away on his super tuna - you know this man is packing, right? My jaw hurts and I look up at him and say, 'Hey, have you ever snowballed anyone?' and he says-"
"Ahhhhh!" you scream as the video, mercifully, cuts off. Oh god, not that story!
"Will it shock you to learn that Jin did not get her number?" Taehyung asks as you bury your face in your hands.
"Great. I guess I'm never getting another birthday wish from Jin on Facebook. I don't remember any of that, but that's not so bad." As long as no one heard you finish that story.
"ROLL VIDEO NUMBER 2!"
"God, Taehyung, must you shout in my ear?"
Jimin swipes again and Jungkookās face fills the frame. Then the camera pans to you, where youāre clinging to your brotherās shoulder, tears running down your face. You can hear Jimin snickering as the camera bobbles slightly.
āNoona, why are you crying?ā Taehyungās voice asks in the video from offscreen.
āBecause Yoongi is here! Yoongi! Yoongs! Why did I leave him behind?ā
You close your eyes, wishing this was a dream, but when you reopen them, youāre still on screen, blubbering into your brotherās hoodie.
āI donāt understand what youāre saying,ā Jungkook says on screen, and you shake your head, tears spilling everywhere. "Min Yoongi? Weren't you guys just, like, barely friends?"
āI shouldnāt have gone away to college! He was my everything. How could I leave him behind, with no one to protect him?ā
āProtect him from what? Youāre not making any sense!ā
āOh, you donāt understand!ā You gesture towards the karaoke machine in the corner, where some Steven Tyler wannabe is belting āI Donāt Want to Miss a Thing.ā āDo you hear that? It's our song! Oh, Yoongi, how could I do that to you??ā
āDo what to me?ā
āOh no,ā current day you groans as the camera whips to where Yoongi is standing by your booth, a beer in one hand, basket of hot wings in the other. He looks perplexed.
āOh, hey, Yoongi-hyung,ā Jungkook greets him. āThose wings look good. I suggest you just go enjoy them.ā
Yoongi just continues to gawk at you as you wave your arms, sobbing. āYoongi, this song! Itās about us!ā And as you cringe on your couch, Video You begins to warble āThen I kiss your eyes, and thank god weāre together!ā
āDid I miss something? Did you two date?ā Taehyung inquires, stealing a wing from Yoongi.
āNot that Iām aware,ā Yoongi replies drolly, setting his basket on your table. āAre you okay? Do you want to go outside and get some fresh air?ā He pauses. "But, uh, maybe not with me."
āUggghhh, you guys just donāt get it. We were meant to be together and I just ran off and - hey, are those for me?ā Your attention is diverted by the wings, and the camera cuts off.
Slumping against the arm of the couch, you look at your brother. āTell me Yoongi left after that embarrassing display.ā
Jungkook nods. āOh, he left. Right after you ate his entire basket of wings. But at least the eating kept you from talking anymore.ā
āFantastic. Hooray for my drunk stomach overriding my drunk brain. But if thatās all I did last night, blabbing about a longtime crush, Iāll live.ā
āIām glad you said that,ā Taehyung grins brilliantly. You donāt trust that boxy smile. āJimin, if you please?ā
āOh Christ. Jimin, please donāt.ā
Your plea goes unanswered as Jimin pulls up a third video.
āGah! You really couldnāt find a flattering angle for any of these?ā
Once again, your face takes up the entire screen as the camera reveals you swaying next to the karaoke machine, mic in hand. As Jimin adjusts the volume again, you recognize the music swelling as you open your mouth and croak, āThere used to be a graying tower alone on the sea. Yooouuu became the light on the dark side of meee!ā
āHave I ever told you what a lovely voice you have, noona?ā
āShove it, Taehyung.ā
As you continue to croon āKiss from a Rose,ā the camera zooms out, showing the alarmed faces of everyone else in the bar, including a small group of people playing pool. With a bolt of dread, you recognize one of them.
āOh no. Not him. Please not him!ā
It is in fact Kim Namjoon, the sweet nerd from high school that youād nursed a crush on for four long years. And just as you're realizing this, Video You also appears to be noticing him. She leaves the stage, still clutching the mic, and approaches the tall, rather stunned-looking man.
As you watch in horror, Video You proceeds to turn her karaoke performance into a full bump and grind routine, attempting and failing to twerk on Namjoon, then climbing on the pool table and gyrating on the green felt. āAhhh!ā you shout, covering your eyes as Video You tries to grind on the billiard balls. āStop it stop it stop it!ā
Your brother isnāt watching, his face buried in the throw pillow youād flung at him earlier. āIs it almost over, Tae?ā
āJust a few more seconds,ā Taehyung answers, still beaming.
You canāt help but look back at the screen as Video You points the mic at the awestruck crowd gathered around the pool table. When no one sings along with you, you angrily grab the 8 ball and throw it as everyone ducks. Luckily, youāre too wasted to throw straight, or hard, but Namjoon quickly dives in and grabs your arm to prevent you from chucking more. Thatās when the video ends.
What the fuck. How much alcohol did you have last night? A metric fuckton?
āHow do I not remember a single second of this?ā You glare at Jimin. āAre these deepfakes??ā
Jimin giggles. āSorry, noona, these are 100% real.ā
āIn retrospect, we probably shouldnāt have bought you so many shots,ā your brother admits.
āGee, you think?ā you exclaim. āI donāt know if I can ever show my face in Pied Piper again after that! Please tell me I didnāt hurt anyone or break anything with those billiard balls!ā
āNah, Namjoon talked you off the table pretty quickly. And then he ran out of there like his clothes were on fire,ā Taehyung informs you.
āI canāt say I blame him. Christ. Iām never drinking with you guys again.ā
āAw, noona, donāt say that!ā Jimin pouts.
āYeah, we just wanted you to have a fun night,ā Taehyung adds. āBut I guess itās all a moot point anyway, since youāre not allowed back in Pied Piper.ā
āWait, they banned me? For writhing on the pool table?ā
āAmong other things.ā
For fucks sake. āWhat other things?ā
Jungkook flops onto his back, sighing incredibly loudly. āJUST SHOW HER, TAE.ā
āOkay. THE GRAND FINALE!ā
You shrink into a tiny ball in anticipation of more agony as the camera pans across another crowd. This time, itās a group of dancers, packed onto a small dance floor on the other side of the bar. As the bass thumps, you grit your teeth as your visage flashes on screen. Youāre so plastered that youāre barely upright, shimmying to your own beat and clinging to a really good-looking man with day-glo yellow hair.
āHobi!ā you gasp. āOh noooo, please tell me I didnāt do something terrible to Hobi!ā
Your old friend Jung Hoseok, a ray of sunshine in human form, was always your favorite dance partner at parties. His moves were legendary. But you donāt see any of those killer steps as you watch him struggle to stop you from falling over on Pied Piperās dance floor.
āFuck, he still looks good,ā you canāt help but mutter, wincing as Hobi nearly drops Video You. Heās not a big, muscular man; heās lithe, a bit wiry, having kept that dancerās frame all these years. And heās obviously three sheets to the wind, too. So itās no wonder heās having trouble keeping you both on your feet.
Video You sluggishly wraps her legs around Hobi like a sloth trying to climb a thin tree. Hobi has been fighting valiantly this entire time to remain standing, but this is clearly too much, the way you put your full drunken weight on him, and he starts to tip.
āTimber!ā Taehyung yells as Video You and Hobi crash into a table on the edge of the dance floor. Drinks go flying and patrons scatter as you land on top of Hobi on the ground.
The music cuts off, as if youāre watching a movie instead of a horrifying chronicle of your actual life, and gawkers begin to huddle around your prone bodies. The camera moves closer as you presume your brother and his friends run to check on you. Taehyung and Jimin cackle as Jungkook pops into frame, kneeling over you.
āNoona? You okay?ā your brother asks. Video You just flaps a hand at him as Hobi groans.
āShhh, Jungkook, go away. Bedtime.ā
Taehyung joins the fray. āCome on, get up, noona.ā He grabs an arm and starts tugging, but you push him off as Hobi sits up, rubbing the back of his head.
āNo. Sleepy.ā
Completely mortified, you canāt tear your eyes away from the tv as Video You begins to pull her shirt over her head. āHot. Sleep nakey.ā
āOh no,ā your brother mutters on the video, swiftly running out of frame as you yank your top off. But you can hear him laughing as you toss the shirt directly into the crowd, where it fortuitously lands on Jiminās phone. As he fumbles to remove it, the other onlookers shout āOhhhhhh!ā and then Taehyungās voice shouts āHey, dude, let go of her bra!ā
Your brother lets out a strangled cry, muffled by the thick rug heās lying on.
āI almost had to fight that guy for your bra, noona,ā Taehyung enlightens you. āI want you to know that I was ready to throw down. But he eventually gave it back, after taking some pictures.ā
āOh god, please make it stop,ā you beg through your fingers.
āThatās the end,ā Jimin states, putting his phone down.
There isnāt a word strong enough for how humiliated you feel. You want to collapse in on yourself like a dying star. Just go poof! And disappear.
āOkay,ā you state, trying to stay calm. āThis is okay. Iām just going to delete all my social media accounts. Move to Antarctica. Become a hermit. It will be fine. I donāt need friends. Iāll have penguins.ā
āHey, at least you only got topless,ā Taehyung offers helpfully. āHobi stopped you before you could remember how to unbutton your jeans.ā
āOh my god!ā you yell, whirling on Taehyung. āYou guys are actual demons! Why did you feed me so much booze? Why didnāt you stop me before I treated the entire bar to a strip show?ā
āYou saw us!ā your brother jumps in to defend his friends. āWe did try to stop you, but you just pushed us away! What did you want us to do, knock you out?ā
āI mean, that couldnāt possibly have been worse than what actually happened!ā Curling into a ball, you rub your face with your hands. āI can never be seen in this town again. Iām not leaving this house until itās time to go home, and then Iām never coming back. It was nice knowing all of you.ā Your eyes narrow. āWell, thatās not entirely true.ā
āHey at least we got you home safe and sound. I mean, Taehyung did. I had to stay behind to try to make things right with the Pied Piper staff,ā Jungkook grouses.
āI didnāt bring her home,ā Taehyung states, cocking his head. āI had to console Jin when he struck out with the bartender, remember? Jimin drove her home.ā
Jimin just looks confused, eyes wide as he shakes his head.
āWell, I sure as fuck didnāt drive myself home, so how did I get here?ā
Taehyung opens his mouth, but a voice calls out from upstairs. āBaby?ā
As the four of you watch in shock, Hobi suddenly appears, traipsing down the stairs. Heās clad only in a pair of your old sweats, running his hand through some seriously fluffy bedhead. āAre you coming back to bed? You got up a few hours ago to get some water and then just⦠vanished.ā He yawns. āI wouldāve come look for you, but I passed out again.ā
Blinking rapidly, you stare at your half-naked friend as he stretches nonchalantly in your living room. For the first time all day, you find yourself desperately wishing you could remember last night. Or the last few hours of it, at least.
Time to make some new memories.
āYes. Yes, Iām coming to bed.ā Itāll be easy to avoid your entire town if you donāt leave your bedroom for the rest of the weekend, right?

---------- Prologue --
If I could describe the way his gaze makes me feel in one word it would probably beā¦
Iām going to have to go with "uncomfortable".
Yea.
I said it.
Uncomfortable.
In the absolute best way, sure, but let me just honestly say out loud (well, in my head) that it has been legit agony. To have all of these feelings drummed up so suddenly and at once for this one person. How people in relationships get over feeling this vulnerable all the time is beyond me.
From the moment we first locked eyes and through each encounter since then...
Every simple conversation,
Every plot to secretly meet,
Every unplanned moment that became a precious memory for me,
Every one of the countless, staged, 'casual run-ins' with one another,
Each of the covert missions we carried out,
Each of the lies we told and the omissions of the truth that our friends made for us,
All the sneaking around and all of the work was necessary just to have a basic date.
Just to have one night together.
And Iām not sorry for it because I would do it all again if I had to.
It was worth it so he could experience some semblance of normalcy for once in his life.
Itās amazing, really, how long we were able to keep it up.
What, with the many declarations of his affections for me that felt so obvious but Dispatch and the rest of the press missedā¦
We somehow still survived even after that stupid, impulsive and unprofessional profession he decided to make in front of both armiesā¦
That one left me breathless. He was so smooth.
And, yes-- right now, as he gloats at me with his eyes from across this aisle.
Heās currently trying to get me riled up over a snack. A snack that I bought, mind you. His hand has been forever lost in my bag of shrimp crackers with that dumb-pretty, cocky smirk of his and flecks of golden crumbs dusting his lips.
The power of a single look from this man?
Even when heās being obnoxiously cute like this?
Yea, even now.
What I see in his eyes when he looks at me can unsettle my entire being.
Back when we met, his stare was unnerving. He wasnāt just examining me like everyone else did, though. Holding his gaze for the first time felt like a test that I was unprepared for. I didnāt know what answers he wanted from me. I hadnāt properly studied. There was no time.
Never once did he judge me based on my appearance, which was so opposite of anyone around us. Nor did he judge me by my choice of handbag, which he once swore he notices first when meeting someone to get around actually answering the question.
His lack of prejudice was appreciated but it was a privilege I certainly was not accustomed to since moving to South Korea.
He didnāt and still doesnāt give half a fuck about my height,
-- only a few inches shorter than him and weāre eye level when Iām in heels.
My curves,
-- hips wider than his, chest ample and rear high, rounded and pronounced.
My natural hair,
-- which when free suffocates him if I lean on his shoulder.
He didnāt care about my skin tone, meanwhile, his entire country revolves around this standard idea of porcelain equaling perfection.
He didnāt make assumptions about me based on the way that I speak or the way I sometimes make very American mistakes.
Honestly, I could be standing before him, stripped down completely nude, and this guy would probably still keep his eyes locked on mine for as long as humanly possible before indulging.
He likes that weāre so different. He likes that Iām so different. He says all of my everything is exactly what he didnāt know he was looking for.
Each day I wake up and struggle to remind myself that heās into this-- into me and my body, my thoughts, my dreams and my touch. Itās a lot for my brain to accept.
Until he rolls over, opens his eyes and looks at me.
Those searing orbs he houses in that perfectly sculpted face of his are dangerous, packed with the fervency of a meteor and the luster of a star.
He has the ability to make every drop of blood in my veins run hot. I could easily describe to you in detail the residual side effects that have been wracked upon my person since meeting Min Yoongi.
Damn him and that look.
It feels not as if he's looking at me or looking through me because, no. That much I would be able to handle. At least I think I could.
Well, I definitely can handle that kind of look from anyone except for him. I did all the time. I could take it when I was still capable of discernment which is a skill I now lack thanks to his presence in my life.
Back in the day, when our paths first crossed, I swear to you-- I had a thicker skin.
Ok, I should rephrase that.
āBack when we first stumbled upon one anotherā is more true to this story.
I was so used to either being gawked at like some newly discovered species in a zoo OR (on the flip side) being completely ignored altogether like I wasnāt worthy of existing.
But Yoongi?
His is a sincere, open and full-on stare that bores into me, birthed from somewhere deep within him.
Always so intense, his focus on me. Itās discomfiting, the way Iām left paralyzed by him. Helpless while he hacks into my hardware and memorizes every line of my code. Itās as if he knows things about me, my system and how I work that even I have yet to download and discover. He sees every pixel. Heās saved away each of my files āas isā and keeps searching for more.
He sees all of me.
And whenever our eyes connect, Iām able to see all of him too.
I want nothing more than for him to keep looking at me exactly the way he is right now.
Like he wants to keep what heās found.
I would also like for him to stop being a fucking tease and pass back my damn shrimp crackers already.
Look. It isnāt my fault that my love for @smashinās everything is so all-encompassing that when I finished the joy that is @reliablemittenāĀ āProblemsā fic that told such a rich and nuanced story with so few words that I refused to do any actual work despite being gone for about two weeks and going on a tear to write this nonsense of exactly 250 words a chapter.
Hey, I have layers. I donāt only write angst! Iāll be releasing these chapters either daily or since I have no chill, all at fucking once! YAY!
Summary: Ā A spy v spy fic of epically stupid proportions featuring Jung Hoseok and his handler, Min Yoongi. Shenanigans and things that go boom ensue. Also, you are a mysterious spy of mysterious origins causing all the explody things so thereās that.

Hoseok makes you as soon as you enter the premises. The problem is, he canāt yet decide if you get made on purpose or youāre incompetent. The latter is disappointing because Hoseok hates shoddy work in any field of expertise ā least of all his since that can get a person (and other people) killed. The former is⦠intriguing.
He decides you bear further investigating despite his handlerās strenuous objections.
āYouāre being an idiot,ā Yoongi says, his raspy voice crackling through his earpiece.
āYouāre supposed to be supportive.ā Hoseok lifts his champagne flute to his lips.
Yoongiās sigh is audible and not a little irritated. āItās an unnecessary risk. Youāre here on a job ā not to suss out the competition.ā
āBut like, why not both?ā
āBecause you can get made, you fuckpuffin!ā his handler seethes. āGet your fucking shit together and get out. Thatās an order.ā
Hoseok grins. āOoooh, I love it when you get mouthy.ā
āI donāt know why I bother keeping you alive. My life would certainly be easier if I didnāt.ā
āAw, hyung,ā coos Hoseok. āI know you donāt mean to be hurtful. Itās okay to tell the people you love that you love them. I wonāt hurt you unless you say, āPlease.āā
āI will remember this the next time youāre dangling from a precarious ledge and require a well-placed dump truck to break your fall.ā
Hoseok notes you are missing and says, āGotta go, boss.ā His professional pride canāt allow you to beat him to his quarry.

Dedicated to those who feel ignored in the YN/Reader Fan Fic realm. To those who still consume and enjoy and share and reblog and follow even though they're not able to fully envision themselves as the MC. For those that fit all the criteria for the lead but end up in the supporting cast... or hell, for people that just wanna read a ridiculous comedy about an awkward black chick in Korea who sticks her foot in her mouth a lot and makes a fool of herself over and over like I Love Lucy but still (hopefully!) ends up with her Ricky in the end... then, I GOTCHU BOO.
Coming soon to a screen near... your face, I guess.
[By the way, this is in no way a diss to the majority of fic authors out there of whatever non-melanin-blessed nationality- cause I stan the shit out of you guys and love your work all the same, duh. This is just something I've always wanted to attempt... for me, too.]

Notes:Ā I donāt know what it is about Kim Seokjin but tis the season for Jin and heās just such a delight. The fic came about because I dreamt of Jin (twice) in one night and it was unbearably wholesome that I just had to create a backstory for the scene. Iāll share the scene at the end.
Special thanks as always to @bangtanbeforebitchesā for reading the first two sections in real time and always loving me. You are the best beta a person could ever hope for. (Friends, I met her IRL for D1 and D2 of BTS concerts and we were roomies and she is EVERYTHING!!!)
Summary:Ā Seokjin Kim is sitting with Yoongi and Hoseok at the table waiting on the rest of their party when you stalk into the bar ā all dark hair, power suit, and power heels ā deep in some contentious discussion with a much taller man ā also clad in a power suit. He pegs you two as a couple given the obvious crackling chemistry ā your hand is gripped intensely around the manās forearm, and Seokjin is surprised when your face lights up at the sight of Yoongi and you veer toward his table.

Can I copy and paste my AO3 comment? Because Iām totally going to copy and paste my AO3 comment.
Ahem...
I think I let out about 32 āholy shitās while reading this.
It was everything I expected and more. The āmoreā being the unexpected angst (because that was NOT discussed but not surprising in the slightest because I KNOW YOU and know how you work and where you thrive) but the addition wasn't excessively angsty... just angsty enough... you ride in the pocket when it comes toĀ āangstā and I am here for it.
This YN is one for the books.
This KSJ is one for the books.
Your books, duh. I donāt know what other books I could possibly be referring to.
And I SWEAR TO MF GOD this KNJ should be the father of my children.
The dialogue was like... brain foreplay.
Just HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT. This was fucking hot.
May we all find our happiness in another person like this. And if I can't find them at least let me find Min Yoongi.
In Jungkook's name I pray, AMEN.
I was happy to beta. I was happy to wait for the final product.
Love you to pieces.
ALSO!!! I'm cocoa skinned and have silver-ish hair... I KNEW THAT CHICK SEEMED FAMILIAR.Ā
You're stuck with me.
Read this one, peoples. Youāre welcome.
