Look at me, coming back from such a long time away just to make such a long, serious statement. Tch. Yet, it needs to be said. I hope it helps some of you. I know you are scared. I am scared too.
But I think, in the wake of such terrible news as we received on Tuesday, it is important now as much as ever to remember our own humanity, even in the face of those who would deny it.
There are men like that man throughout history. I have struggled against them my entire life, because of my appearance, because of my heritage, because of my preferences. It has not been easy. It will not be easy now, either. There will be pain. We are already feeling it. We cannot prevent it, but we can carry each other through it.
They will try to strip us of our humanity. They will try to tear us down until we feel as helpless animals, and then they will try to turn us on each other as if we were fighting dogs existing only for their amusement and no further.
Now, more than ever, we must remember that it is not just persons just like us who are now in real danger, but many others, a great diverse rainbow of people who are threatened and frightened by the words this man has said, the promises he made to get where he is. We must stand for each other, we must reaffirm to each other that we are real and we are valid and we are human, no matter how many times we are attacked, no matter what they try to strip from us.
We must remind each other that we are here, in this together, and we will all fight, for the rights of not only our little group, but all of them.
The darkness is closing in, my friends, but we must not hide from it. We must stand together, all of our light shining in one bright star.
We will get through the night.
