that said, heidi still has some very strong feelings about team plasma and particularly those people who bought into their rhetoric and released their own pokémon—that they're fucking idiots. Okay, sure, rationally, she understands plasma was extremely emotionally manipulative. She knows that many people joined Plasma because they lacked other options. But in her mind, her knee-jerk reaction... the ones who actually took it to heart and abandoned their pokémon never really understood their pokémon in the first place. as you might expect, the experienced trainers who had spent years raising their pokémon weren't really the ones buying in to plasma's rhetoric, for the most part; it was young trainers, "failed" trainers, people whose experience with & understanding of pokémon was more limited. where heidi takes issue with them is that many of them were extremely careless with how they released/abandoned their pokémon. besides the obvious many of these pokémon were living healthy lives with their trainers and did not understand why they were suddenly being abandoned/released, there was also little regard for whether the pokémon could even reasonably fend for themselves, or if returning pokémon in large numbers to the wild would have any environmental impacts. It's no coincidence that many of these released pokémon ended up being collected by Team Plasma after the fact, either. so, basically... heidi has some strong words for the people who bought in and released their pokémon, having encountered several herself that were victims of this. not that she'd say those words to their faces.
i think ultimately one of the more facinating things abt heidi to me is that on a certain level, she's not actually all that ideologically opposed to team plasma. she can't express a lot of that sentiment publically because of the backlash she'd face, but the fact remains that broadly speaking, she doesn't really agree with the idea of catching pokémon, and that modern society at large does not actually desire or make any meaningful effort towards "living alongside" pokémon, despite what they may say. (Have I mentioned Heidi hates Lumiose?) Ideally, Heidi would have it so that catching an unwilling pokémon is not possible, at least not for average trainers. (There are situations where being able to contain a pokémon would render pokeball capture more justifed, like trying to rescue & provide medical care to pkmn affected by, say, natural disaster) Pokéballs should be used exclusively for pokémon that a trainer has already befriended, not to just capture and throw around willy nilly with no regards for the individual pokémon. Of course, she also recognizes that this is kind of logistically impossible, and that limiting the capture of pokémon to only a select few comes with its own set of problems (Ghetsis DNI). So, instead, she has to focus her efforts as champion on changing the dialogue and culture surrounding pokémon, battling, and pokéball usage. nbd.
"People keep trying to get me to 'admit' that I think everyone in was an irredeemable monster... Like their opinion is more legitimate if it's coming from my mouth. It's annoying..."

so anyway the facts as established: only fully digital modern pokeballs are League-legal in just about every region. The logic behind this is supposedly convenience but the morality of it is really dubious at best. however, you literally cannot participate in the sytem without them, so. most poached and illegally traded pokemon are typically caught in traditional, simple apricorn mechanism* pokeball. while probably more complicated than PLA would make it appear, that pokeball mechanism is still simple enough for someone to reproduce by hand. compared to mass-jailbreaking pokeballs, it is just a Lot easier (or at least used to be; maybe shit is changing in the rotom era). *they probably still used mass-produced plastic casings tho. bootleg pokeballs, if you will. following both the team rocket breakup, there were talks within Tohjoh about banning/phasing out non-digital pokeballs outright as a potential solution to the whole pokemon poaching and illegal trade issue. This was pretty soundly opposed, as digital pokeballs had yet to become quite so dominant as they would be in the next couple decades. even later, though, the idea never really got a foothold when it was brought back into discussion. apricorn balls were, and still are, very widely used across both regions, but especially Johto. also, it would probably hurt the artisan ball market and that's a considerable chunk of tourism / export money. there are people who would buy a custom artisinal pokeball made by a master for upwards of thousands of dollars. ESPECIALLY rich freaks in Kalos. those talks have come up again in post-plasma Unova, for much the same reasons, and it's looking. Not great, tbh. While it's probably not going to happen... hopefully... the fact that its getting as much genuine traction as it is feels pretty concerning. (unfortunately, the discourse surrounding it is RANCID. they're saying having a pokemon so large that you can't bring it indoors is "problematic". do not look at the post-plasma league discourse.)
Yeah, she doesn't want to do this today. She's going to pretend she didn't hear that.

I'd generally put pokemon character designs pretty low on the "understands what shoes look like" ranking so I really shouldn't be surprised when a character has some godawful shoes but
N, what the fuck are those?
thinkin abt heidi's public image as champion...
short answer: how ppl imagine heidi vs what heidi is actually like
so, the way the public views Heidi is pretty well at odds with who Heidi actually is. Partially by design—Heidi is careful to keep out of the public eye as much as possible when she's not officially acting as champion. Her personal social media is largely anonymized or outright private, and she rarely accepts interviews or other ~celebrity~ appearances. She has enough trouble communicating as a regular person, much less as a celebrity; the less she has to talk, the better. She only gives interviews if she's provided the questions beforehand, so she's not left floundering on camera because the words won't come to her. Generally speaking this makes her seem a lot more articulate than she would normally appear in her day to day life. When approached in public by people who recognize her, she's generally polite (almost to a fault; she's not very good at putting her foot down) but not especially talkative.
what the public does know about her, based on what she has shared & what other information is publically available, is that she is a skilled artist, she gardens as a hobby, and that she has a "natural" talent for handling pokémon (according to several others, including Professor Juniper; her ability to speak to pokémon isn't ~official~ knowledge, but several people whom she'd met during her journey have shared the rumor). While the exact details of how she found Kyurem and defeated Team Plasma aren't well known to the public, the fact that she supposedly managed to "tame" the legendary Monster of Lacunosa has definitely come up in discussion surrounding her.
The public read of her is more "cute, shy girl," almost a Princess-y type. To some, its very charming; to others, its a good excuse to question her skill & qualification as champion. (Who let this little girl be champion? Lmao clearly old man Alder is going senile 🤣🙄) And while she's not really fond of this interpretation, she also hasn't gone out of her way to stop it from being spread (yet) - trying to fight against that particular tide is, at least for the moment, a lot more trouble than it seems to be worth.
"I've been hiding out in the Giant Chasm the last few days... Kyurem keeps it nice and cold there year-round."
one of the bio ideas i've been playing around with is, in lieu of a "personality" section (literally the worst part of every character bio) where i just list traits, i want to instead have a selection of in-character statements expressing heidi's beliefs. thinking of maybe framing it as ideals/truths and having two versions? statements? on each one. idk.
anyway i've been pondering bios and how to write heidi's bio (and character bios in general) in a way that makes it, like, actually digestible and easy to reference while still providing meaningful information & also not being dry as fuck. I still don't have a solution but I do have ideas.

plot threads I want but know tumblr is too conflict averse to provide me: someone challenging the legitimacy of heidi's champion title and/or challenging her under the pretense that she's not a suitable champion
nobody asked but i want to ramble so:
firstly this would actually allow for meaningful exploration of the pokemon league as an organization and the politics involved behind league appointments. because I think we all agree "the champion is just the latest guy who hasn't lost any league battles" is kind of silly, but we never get to get into the meat of how the behind the scenes stuff works.
heidi, frankly, does not really like battling. she doesn't dislike it, but she doesn't enjoy it, either. being champion isn't so much what she wants to do so much as the most logical place for her to be right now, regardless of if that place is actually where she wants to be.
for all intents and purposes the claim that heidi was illegitimately appointed as champion probably actually holds some weight. beyond the fact that she never did a proper e4 challenge due to extenuating circumstances, heidi sort of got to skip several other steps in the process because the league was sort of in chaos following the events of grey; a lot of formalities got handwaved in the interest of getting a new champion in the position as quickly as possible.
