- Firstly, my Valentino is ANCIENT. Sex is one of the oldest services, after all. Through all his years in the underworld, he has capitalized on that to climb to the top. Nowadays, he is the overlord of prostitution, rather than porn.

- I chose to make Valentino a predatory insect to match his predatory nature. He is based on the spider wasp, a parasitic wasp known for hunting spiders specifically.

- Val has grown an intense love for jewelry and piercings. Not really a change, but it is notable

- Nothing was wrong with his original color scheme, but I did change it to match his two main sins of gluttony and lust

Honestly there wasn’t much wrong with his original design. The real problem how he is written….

Here is my rewrite of Valentino:

In his first life, Valentino was a citizen a Rome, as well as a high class equestrian. He was very active in the Roman slave trade, and frequently visited his favorite brothels. He wasn’t anyone special, just a high-class prick who enjoyed the finer things in life.

Then, of course, he finds himself in hell. He had no true advantages over the sinners around him, but you can’t thwart the ruthless spirit of a Roman. He used domination and seduction—two things he learned to use in his first life—to control the weaker creatures around him. Sooner or later, Valentino created the bar influential brothel in all of hell.

My main problem with Valentino is that the writers cannot decide if Valentino should be taken seriously as a villain. When he is with Angel, he is ruthless and cruel, but any other time, he is immature, stupid, and even sympathetic. The writers cannot show both of these aspects of him at the same time without making the tone inconsistent. If they wanted us to like Valentino, they should have shown his charming side BEFORE we saw his abusive tendencies. In my rewrite, Valentino’s abuse is not taken seriously—at first. The audience is introduced to Val’s comedic side first, and the full extent of his abuse is not shown. He’s certainly not a good man, but it’s hell! He’s just a goofy guy… As the series goes on, however, we learn more about his relationship with Angel (whom I’ve renamed Poppy), and his originally goofy character slowly becomes more disturbing. Honestly, I don’t why the writers didn’t go this route to begin with; it’s intriguing, it’s scarily realistic, and it would have let Valentino have his funny and scary moments without the two undermining each other.
