When Julian was 14 to 15 and his friend Joy hadn’t yet been shipped off to a higher-octane boarding school overseas, he used to take the train up to New York and bust her out of prep school so they could go (in his terms) “Caulfielding.” This means, in this case: 1) bumming cigarettes from hippies; 2) pretending to be runaways to try and convince said hippies they were cool; and 3) sneaking into adult bookstores in the Village and poring over dirty magazines until the leatherman who owned the place noticed them and chased them out.
Ruth (Paul's mom) and Caroline (Julian's mom), who may not ever interact in the book itself, but who are 100% guaranteed to hate each other's guts whenever they do meet. In the meeting depicted here, probably under other-than-ideal circumstances, both have nonetheless found the emotional energy to be deeply unimpressed.
now with 100% more color. I hate these two so much, you guys
facts:
1) kissing is hard to draw
2) but it felt wrong to have had these two for almost four years without ever having drawn them doing anything more couple-y than intense eye contact, so I felt obligated to try
but also 3) they are terrible and shouldn't be allowed to make out

fashion plate
Some Fleischers, currently backgroundless, arranged in order from youngest to oldest and mean muggin' at whatever faux pas is happening offscreen.
I'm trying to get better at differentiating faces, so naturally I took the extra-difficult tack of trying to differentiate siblings with varying degrees of family resemblance. (Paul and Laurie both bear a strong facial resemblance to their father, while Audrey looks more like their mother.) I'm also trying to get better at body language, so this picture shows the different ways that the Fleischer kids physically manifest "cranky."
guess who has a soft spot for dogs!
guess who is going to realize far too late that he probably should've just torn a hole in the dog food bag!
Audrey, palette #18 – I liked this color palette because it reminds me of a poorly-preserved color photo from the 70s whose cyan dye has been the first to fade. There are probably a lot of such photos of Audrey rattling around her friends' albums.
(Meme post here.)
Julian, palette #8 – would be a little better at beach-appropriate accoutrements than Paul if he didn't, y'know, bring along some Hegel (and a red pen for snarky comments) as "light reading."
This palette makes him look like a Disney villain tbh. I do not think he would mind this.

My first attempt at the limited-palette meme, using Prismacolor pencils instead of CG. (Sadly I don't have a scanner here and have to take pictures of everything with my phone -- it looks better and more color-accurate IRL.)
Paul, palette #10 – hangin' out at the beach, dressed about as casually and with as much skin visible as he's ever going to manage without anguish. Note the SUNBURN EVERYWHERE because gingers.
(Meme post here.)
Hit me up, y'all.
Requests so far:
Paul, #10 [complete]
Julian, #8 [complete]
Audrey, #18 [complete]
In 1964, Julian placed third in a national professional chess tournament in which most of the other players were adults. His parents lobbied graciously consented for the Washington Post to run an article about him, accompanied by a suitably cute photo.
Ten years later, the photographer comes in to work to find that there's been a sudden flood of reprint rights requests for some barely-memorable photo for an old human interest piece. (Seriously? What the hell could that be about? ...Well, shit.)
Dealing with a Police Interrogation, Technique #1: this is all a big misunderstanding, I have a reasonable answer for literally any question you might ask me, obviously I am super innocent and utterly harmless, can I go home now please :(

permutation on that drawing meme that goes around now and then
Ask me anything about my fake people and I will draw the answer.
Just a quick sketch of my little Belgians, who are currently next in line for my novel-writing attention. Leon (right) is a sickly kid whose family just unwittingly moved into a haunted house. Marijn (left) is the one who haunts it. They cannot actually directly interact with each other unless Leon is like, unconscious, but they are still cute baby queers together.
(Leon is really difficult to draw because he is SUPER SKINNY on account of his 1930s-cutting-edge anti-seizure dietary restrictions, and the cheekbones add like ten years to his face.)
