5 times pete saved ray + 1 time ray saved pete

i cried more and loved it even more to no one’s surprise. and this time i took some fun notes that i thought to share! and yes it’s a bit gavries focused and i’d love to know thoughts!

- from the moment ray notices pete on the way to the starting line, he zeros in on him right up until he introduces him self. im talking looking back like a curious and nervous lost puppy.

- it’s amazing how we really see them fall in love in these ‘moments’. ray talks about the walk not really being ‘a choice’ through his dad’s ideas and we see pete’s attention shift from curiosity to genuine interest.

- pete is so interesting to me. he can be an asshole, but also the voice that keeps you going. his decision to kill the major in the end almost feels more right because they show us his sense of vengeful justice with his reaction to how barkovitch ‘murdered’ rank, saying he can’t wait till they get him. though clearly we see that’s not the case later on because he was distraught over barko in the end! but i always found his reaction to rank’s death so intense, like you could tell he has a lot more hidden underneath.

- art’s long ass was lowkey the baby of the group.

- call me insane, but the incline scene is my favourite in the film. before, during and after. it’s one of the reason i went to rewatch, cause i can’t find any full clips. the way it’s shot, ray’s gay panic, the music, the sound design of the footsteps, barko’s provoking comments echoing. then moving to pete saving ray and keeping him going multiple time! #cinema.

- after olson’s death, there’s a scene of them just walking in the darkness, no dialogue. it felt like a moment of silence for the first loss of a musketeer.

- made a note to look up sights they came across on the walk, like the rotting bull? in the beginning, the pinned crow, the burning car, etc. if anyone has anything they know about those please share, it would be appreciated!

- i felt so sad and angry for collie in this watch! i felt his homesickness elevated his empathy for ray at the moment he saw his mom because he got so angry for him. it felt like his last straw almost because he fully witnessed how dehumanized they all were. like you’re putting a gun on him in front of his mother???

- correct me if im wrong, but i believe collie called mcvries’ name when he finally stood up against the soldiers. he probably wanted them all to maybe join in hopes of tackling the system but of course it’s strong and deep rooted, but was pete the first that he felt would join?

- pete goes on about how he ‘always tries to find light in all the darkeness.’ bruh ray was the light he found on the walk, just as he was to ray. and neither of them fully realize that until pete loses him at the end. it’s why neither of them could handle losing each other.

Also in terms of the symbols, I think that rotting bull represents the loss of life on the road in the The Long Walk, and it foreshadows how the boys that get shot are just left to rot and decay on the road and everything will move on. Perhaps insinuating no one will care enough or respect them enough to even bury them. Like the nameless graveyards for soldiers of war who couldnt be identified. Or soldiers left to rot on missions they couldn’t survive.

Maybe the burning car showed them that there was no easy way out- they must keep walking and taking a drive instead was off limits. Or that nothing would be easy again. Once Youre a soldier, there’s no discharge.
