[In the bleak, cold daylight of a London morning, an old covered bus stop sits in a slow part of town. Slumped against wall inside is a young man who looks to be asleep, though the bags under his eyes make it look like he hasn't been for long. Buses pass by the stop, clearly not even noticing he was there]
[a wolf howls on the distance, as time went by, the noise getting..
Closer?]
[He wakes up for a moment, startled, but quickly falls back asleep. The small angle of sunlight that could make it into the bus stop felt like it was going to set him on fire]
[they turn human, and poke him in the elbow, trying to get his attention]
[He wakes up at this, sitting up a bit and looking a bit distressed. He covers his eyes with his arm, trying to block out the sun, his speech more mumbles than anything else]
. . . missed my bus, thasāall. . . āll catch the uh. . . the next one. . .
Where are you trying to go?
I can try to find an alternative method of transportation.
Itās uh. Itās ok I just need to get home.
[He yawns, sitting up a little more and putting a hand over his eyes.]
I can uh. I can catch the next bus when it gets dark again.
...you really don't look okay.
You sure there's nothing I can do?
Um. . . do you have sunglasses on you maybe? I canāt see a lot without them I uh. Iām really sensitive to light.
I could go get you some, give me a minute.
[they sprint to a local convenience store, steal sunglasses, and come back]
[He puts them on, blinking a few times before trying to get a better look at Alex]
Thanks, man. I owe you one.
I uh, Iām Leroy by the way.
Nice to meet you.
So, what is it with you and staying in the dark?
Itās a medical thing, I think at least. Light gives me uh. . . what do you call them. . . Migraines. Like really, really bad migraines. And uh, I get really bad burns in the sun. I donāt really know why, I canāt really go to a doctor, but usually Iām able to get home before the sun gets up. But I donāt know if the bus ever came last night.
...that doesn't sound like a normal medical thing.
[He shrugs]
Maybe not, but I canāt really go check it out. Hospitals have lights. And theyāre expensive.
..shit.
Well, I doubt I'm qualified to diagnose anything, so sorry.
Itās fine, I mean anybody Iāve ever talked to about it has no idea. Probably some rare disorder that four people in the world have and is incurable or something.
But itās fine, Iām still alive at least. I just messed up today.
Does water help you not burn as much?
[He shakes his head]
I wish. Itās the light itself I think. If I got into a shadow things might be fine, but uh. . . I canāt really see into the sun that well. Even with sunglasses itās way too bright.
There's a cave in my forest.
You could stay there for the day.
That sounds uh. That sounds nice but I donāt think I could get there from here. But I appreciate the offer.
So you're just going to wait here and burn?
Well, Iāve got a dark corner in here. If I go out there and I canāt find a dark spot fast enough, which given the fact I can barely see in the first place is almost impossible, Iāll pass out in that much light.
[He laughs a little bit]
Itās uh. Yeah itās not a good situation. Iāve fucked up pretty bad. I mean I can like, try to keep my head down but if I pass out Iām done for thereās no waking up until itās dark again.
Sorry, Iām not helpful.
Do you know how you got like this in the first place?
Um. . .
[He thinks about it for a while]
I mean it started a couple years ago after I uh. . . I dunno. It didnāt used to be this bad. And every time I try to make it better and like, get used to it or stay out for long periods of time I just pass out and then Iām down and out for like, a week with a migraine.
Oh, wait! You can see! Is there some kind of shaded spot out there? Like an alley or something? At least there I could walk. . .
Yeah.
I can lead you there.
[He stands up, giving the stream of sunlight coming in from the door a wary look.]
Okay. Uh. Okay. That would be great actually.
Right then.
[they grab his wrist, and guide him there]
[He keeps his head low until theyāre in the shade, then leans back against the alley wall exhausted]
Ugh. Ow.
[He rubs his eyes]
Oh my god itās so much better out here. Thanks uh- sorry I donāt remember your name.
It's fine.
I'm Alex.
You okay now?
Yeah. A lot better at least. Nice to meet you, Alex.
[he shakes out his arms and dusts off his jean jacket. He takes something that looks like a straw wrapper from his pocket, opening it and dumping a green-colored powder into his mouth before folding the wrapper into a little star]
Eugh, what's that?
Oh. Um.
[He looks a little embarrassed]
Itās a pixie stick. Like uh, flavored sugar powder. Want one?
I-
They look gross.
Why do you even like them?
Nostalgia I guess. And theyāre good for a little bit of energy. I play a lot of late night shows and theyāre good for keeping up the energy during those. Theyāre not really gross, unless you donāt like sugar then in that case. Uh. Yeah you might not like them.
I've barely had sugar.
I feel like eating pure sugar would be too sweet though.
[He shrugs, tossing the little folder star between his hands]
Maybe.
Do you just not like sugar very much? Or were your parents strict?
My parents barely fed me at all.
They gave me a dead animal every week or two, just so I didn't starve, so yeah, you can say they're strict.
Shit dude, really? That is like, unimaginably fucked up. They sound like absolute bastards.
Eh.
They're dead now, so I try not to think about them.
It's fine though, I swear.
Fair enough. Damn.
Wait so like, what *have* you eaten? How long have you been out of their house?
I've had fish, a variety of animals, peanut butter-
Love peanut butter-
Oh, I've also had chocolate, not dark chocolate though, I can't eat dark chocolate.
And that's about all.
Seriously? Not even like, chicken tikki masala or anything?
You gotta try some more stuff.

Buses pass by the stop, clearly not even noticing he was there]
[Sebastian got off of a bus that stopped at the stop and he noticed Leroy. He glanced around and bit his lip worridly as he walked over to him. He sat down next to him and shook him lightly]
Dude? You arent dead right?
[He woke up, flinching a bit at the sudden sunlight streaming through the doorway of the stop. He puts an arm over his eyes]
ļæ¼I uh- ow- I just missed my uh. . .
[He mumbles, only half awake. After a second he seems to realize who was speaking]
Oh, uh. . . hey Seb! Uh. . . mānot dead. Feel like it though. . .
[He pulled sunglasses out of his bag. He bought them so he could match with Leroy, but he assumed he could make better use of them]
Here uh- take these. Why- why are you sleeping on a bench? What happened? Do I have to hurt someone? Do you need anything?
[He looked worried]
[He fumbles a bit, but gets them on. He blinks a few times, still shifting back farther into the corner away from the light and taking a minute to process what he was saying]
I um. . . I missed my bus. Last night. Or it. . . maybe it didnāt come I donāt remember. But I gotta um. I gotta wait. For the next one when itās dark.
You uh. . . You donāt gotta hurt anyone. Umm unless you can fight the sun. . . heh. . .
[He fumbles in his pockets for something, but ultimately comes out empty handed]
Dammit. . .
I got you
[He puked one of the ones Leroy gave him out of his pocket and handed it to him]
You may have gotten me hooked.
[He paused]
So.. whats the plan? Want me to stay here while you wait? I could go buy an umbrella for you, uhm.. I could call one of my bandmates to pick you up.
[He smiles a bit, taking it gratefully. He hadnāt slept all night]
Thanks man.
Um. Plan. . . I was just gonna wait until it gets dark again but uh. . . what time is it? I didnāt really keep track.
Uhm.. its like.. 9 in the morning.. I think.
[He opened his phone and showed Leroy the time. It was 10:10]
Oh man. . . thatās like? Ten hours until itās dark again? Maybe more?
[He buries his head in his hands, mumbling to himself]
Okay. Um. Yeah I donāt think I can wait that long. I know how to get back walking but. . . oh but I canāt do that either because of the sun. Unless. . .
[He tightens his jacket around himself, sighing]
Maybe the umbrella thing could work? I can uh, I can pay you back for it.
Yeah let me uhhh.. run down the street and find a place that sells umbrellas. Ill be back soon I promise.
[He got up and glanced around and ran down the street to find an umbrella for leroy]
[He waits, fidgeting with his jacket and trying to keep his eyes away from the sunlight coming in the doorway. He really wished he could drive again. Maybe a bike was a good investment.]
[after about 15 minutes Sebastian returned with a black umbrella. He had to find somthing astetic for Leroy. He mumbled a bunch of gibberish between pants and held out the umbrella towards him, with a smile]
[Leroy grins]
You are the actual best, man. Seriously, I owe you one after this.
[He opens it and very cautiously steps outside. Itās doesnāt block the light entirely, but he didnāt feel like he was on the verge of passing out]
Holy shit I canāt believe that actually worked!

Slumped against wall inside is a young man who looks to be asleep, though the bags under his eyes make it look like he hasn't been for long. Buses pass by the stop, clearly not even noticing he was there]
[Sebastian got off of a bus that stopped at the stop and he noticed Leroy.

[In the bleak, cold daylight of a London morning, an old covered bus stop sits in a slow part of town. Slumped against wall inside is a young man who looks to be asleep, though the bags under his eyes make it look like he hasn't been for long. Buses pass by the stop, clearly not even noticing he was there]
[A teenager walks up to the bus stop, a thin trail of fog coalescing behind them. He raises an eyebrow at the man and slowly sits down on the bench as quietly as he can.]
[He doesnāt wake, but flinches when his foot slips and a part of it reaches into the small amount of sunlight the bus stop let in]
[They stare at him, a bit concerned.]
...Are you okay?
[He wakes up a bit, covers his face with his arm and mumbling]
mmyeah. . . just uh. . . just missed my bus Iāll um. . . Iāll get the next one.
[He definitely wonāt with the state heās in. Heās barely awake let alone coherent]
Look, do you need help or something?
I uh. . . no. I just gotta wait for the um. The next one. When itās dark. Canāt be in the lights itās um. Itās too bright. Got a uh- a condition kind of. Medically. Light gives me um. . . what do you call that. . . Migraines. Bad ones like uh, canāt walk or talk or things. Itās ok Iāll get the next bus.
Uh... you know it's like, seven in the morning, right? The sun's been up for a bit. ...You should probably get inside.
[He buries his face in his hands]
I know. But uh. Canāt really. The sun is out there and that makes things ten times worse. Passed out last time. Mānot doing that again. Hopefully. . .
Oh man. Thatās, uh, thatās not goodā¦
[He thinks for a moment before pulling out sunglasses and an umbrella from his bag.]
Here, would this help?
[He glances up, squinting at what he was being offered and trying to see]
Um. . . oh! Uh yeah actually the sunglasses would. . .
[He takes them and puts them on, blinking a few times before sitting up a little more and trying to get a better look at him, still trying to block the sun with his hand. He gives him a sort of half smile]
Thanks, man. I owe you. I donāt know where mine went, I usually have em.
[He yawns]
Jeez. I uh. Iām Leroy.
Itās not a big deal, donāt worry about it. Oh and I-
[He pauses for a moment, seemingly considering something, before making up his mind.] Mason. Iām Mason.
Mason. Gotcha. Nice to meet you!
[He goes to offer a handshake, but the sun in his eyes stops him]
Uh, sorry. I would usually be better at this- the sunās a little bright. Got a sort of- um. Sensitivity to it.
Yeah, you mentioned it.
Hold on, I have an idea. If you keep the sunglasses on and keep your head down, I can hold the umbrella over you and we can try and get inside.
[He thinks for a second]
Maybe, yeah. I hope they have somewhere dark. . .
Ugh. I should have just tried to walk home last night.
[He looks around. All of the nearby buildings have lights on inside, but he does spot an alleyway thatās almost completely dark.]
Would over there work?
Um. . .
[He squints, having to take a few seconds to focus before seeing the small dark spot where the alley was]
Yeah, yeah that could work.
Okay. Come on, letās go.
[He holds out the umbrella.]
[He stands, being very very careful to stay under the umbrella as they walk.]
[When they both get to the alleyway, Mason puts the umbrella away and sits down, leaning against the wall.]
Okay, hopefully this helps.
[He leans back against the wall, running a hand through his hair and letting out a long sigh.]
That is like, worlds better. Thank you.
[He shakes out his arms and paces a bit, finally in a space where he can walk.]
