Let's make it even simpler. Calling someone who self-identifies as a man a woman is misgendering them. It doesn't matter how many trans women you know, it doesn't matter if you're a trans woman yourself, in the moment you are misgendering someone, and that's cruel. Full stop. Respect people's self-identification.

I’d also like to take a moment to point out that when, inevitably, this sort of humor leads to people accidentally calling trans men transfem eggs and trying to pressure them into being women, ie. detransitioning, the response is pretty much always, “but we didn’t know!” Which 1) yeah, you didn’t know, because you couldn’t know for sure, because trans people are not required to out themselves for your comfort, and 2) not knowing that the person you were deliberately misgendering was trans is not an excuse. If people were regularly going up to random women and calling them by he/him pronouns and telling them that they should try being men instead, and if it turned out that some of those women were accidentally trans women, I don’t think anyone alive would think that “but I didn’t know and it was just a joke!” would be a reasonable excuse. Cut that shit out.

i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while

No dude those are assistance devices you literally do in fact use them to naturally interact with your environment, are hindered in that without them, and feel naturally wrong and upset when you don't have them.
