"The fun thing for us for that end sequence was his costume -- what he would have left over from the ship. I don't really think you see it in the film but the trousers that he's wearing, they're cut from one of the flight suits. And we've done a belt buckle that's made of xenonite that Rocky would've made for him. And all of the sewing on it is a little bit - it's nowhere near as good as Jenny would normally do, so we had to purposely ask Jenny to do bad sewing at the top of his trousers, so it'd look like he would've done it.

And then our brilliant breakdown department, run by Tim Shanahan, they break everything down to look like it's 10, 20 years old. So his cardigan and the t-shirt's all faded. And even on the laces -- the laces in his chuck taylors -- because your laces always break after a certain period of time, so we found stuff that was on the ship, like elastics and stuff. There's a nice big close-up actually in the film, so you can see that they're not normal laces, they're like stuff that he would've got from the ship that he's made as make-shift laces."

There will be a plot point and you worry about it or anticipate the cluster fuck that is about to drop on you and it just... doesn't????

(no spoilers btw, none of this happens but stuff like it):

You worry about that debt the God is about to come and collect and there is no way around it? Yeah no, jokes on you, the God decides that it would rather go to a party, you're off the hook. A character is slowly being killed by a mysterious poison and there is no antidote? Hey look what this random ass side-character just found in that cave over there, looks like a magical healing potion. To get to the next level you have to kill that 4000 lvl boss? Hah there is no way you can, oh look at that! It died. An anvil fell on its head before you even got here.

When you put it like that it sounds like Matt just sometimes wanted the easy way out but it's not that at all. The "easy way out" is sometimes so much harder than the original plot line would have been or leads you down a path you never imagined for the characters.

These books constantly keep you on your toes (much to the AI's enjoyment *wink wink*). They constantly ask you: You think you know where this is going? And the answer is always: No you fucking don't!

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.
