As a white person, I look at it this way: when you say that you’re attracted or not attracted to a particular race, what does that mean? What are you actually attracted or not attracted to? Their build? Their hair? Their style? Their mannerisms? All of these things are personal qualities that are not standard across the board for any race in particular, and using these as qualifiers for a particular race is racist. It’s fine to say that you like people with dark hair, but there are people with dark hair in many ethnicities and races. It’s fine to say that you aren’t attracted to people with loud personalities, but there are people with those kinds of personalities in every ethnicity and race. When you start saying that you are or aren’t attracted to a particular race, you are applying stereotypes. My cousin is one of those types who’s apparently only into East Asian women. When I asked him why, he said that he liked them because they were petite, polite, demure, subservient, yada yada. So, I pulled up a photo of South Korean weight lifter Jang Mi-Ran and asked what he thought. He made a face and sort of scowled, saying that she wasn’t his type, so I kept pressing about why not. Is it because she isn’t petite? Because she’s athletic? I think he finally realized that he’s into slender, quiet women, but that doesn’t equal East Asian. The idea that all East Asian women look and act a certain way is racist and damaging. Saying that you’re not attracted to black people means that it’s the skin colour that you don’t like. If it’s anything else (height, mannerisms, fashion sense, etc), then that’s your preference. An entire race of people is not a preference. Once you write off an entire race of diverse people as being unattractive, that’s racist. I apologize if I’m overstepping any lines, this is just how I have explained this idea to white friends who get confused about how “racial preference” is bullshit. -V
