March 8th is International Women's Day, and we are celebrating by acknowledging our heroes in post-punk and goth who just so happen to be women. Some may argue that the…
Honored to be mentioned on this list of amazing women!
Azar Swan’s Zohra Atash reflects on the dark, shimmering mood music of Savage Exile and some of the intense music that inspires her.
“Zohra Atash, the thrilling vocalist of the duo Azar Swan, is the child of displaced Afghani intellectuals who settled in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Her musical diet of goth/industrial soundscapes, gauzy dark shoegaze and Middle Eastern melodies – along with heavy reflection on the political, the personal and the ethereal – creeps into the thick layers of Azar Swan’s midnight post-pop (her partner in the project is Joshua Strawn). The band’s new album, Savage Exile, is a harsher affair, burying Atash’s billowing vocals in non-linear layers of caustic noise and relentless percussion, helped along by industrial noise artist Kris “Alberich” Lapke, who has mixed records by Prurient, Cold Cave and York Factory Complaint. Vivian talks to Atash about the inspirations and process of making Savage Exile, and the pair listen to some of Atash’s most important records.”
Although many would concur that 2017 was a horrible year, this certainly had no negative impact on the music released while surreal and dystopian events unfolded around us. Perhaps there…
Today is Zohra's birthday, so what a lovely gift to find Savage Exile on Post-Punk.com's top albums of the year list, as well as in their 'Best of WGT 2017' roundup. <3 <3 <3

On “Savage Exile,” the duo blend bracing industrial music with moments of startling humanness.
Savage Exile is Bandcamp ALBUM OF THE DAY with a lovely, thoughtful write-up by Ned Raggett:
"One of their strongest efforts to date, refracting the simmering mood music of their earlier into a more unnerving artistic extremism."
Godflesh, Amenra, Unsane and more!
Any list where we sit alongside buds Couch Slut, Amenra, and Drab Majesty as well as idols Ulver and Godflesh is a list we're super psyched to have been included on. Bonus for the Witch Who Came From The Sea header artwork.
Interview with the Seventh Hex where we covered some details about our process, politics, and plans for the future.
I Die: You Die is easily one of the best online publications specializing in aggressive electronic and industrial music, so we're psyched that Savage Exile is #14 on their Top 25 of 2017 list

Many albums have changed our lives, so we tried to narrow it down to just those which spoke directly to the making of Savage Exile. Check them out on Tidal.
“Industrial rockers Azar Swan‘s (Zohra Atash and Joshua Strawn) third album, Savage Exile, was released on December 1, and, in celebration of the record, they let us know some records that have greatly impacted their lives.”

The blast of synthesized noise, distant vocal samples and feedback that kicks off Azar Swan’s third album is a pretty solid indication of the path the American darkwave duo have taken since their debut. The popular perception of Zohra Atash and Joshua Strawn’s work has usually been centered on their capacity for hooks, and indeed the best songs on their 2013 debut Dance Before the War and its 2014 follow-up And Blow Us a Kiss were the ones that married catchy melodies to fraught energy and Atash’s powerful vocal delivery. Savage Exile is a different kind of record though, one that plucks the taut nerves that have always been directly below the surface of the band’s material to great effect.
Reviews of the new record are starting to appear and this one from I Die: You Die is quite nice:
"Charged and queasy as it is, there’s something inspiring in how it nakedly it presents anger and despair, processing an increasingly hostile political and social atmosphere through music. It’s not an easy listen, but it is a stirring one, the best Azar Swan have offered yet. Recommended."
Thank you Elsewhere and everyone who trekked out to see us play. Photo by the amazing Jason Akira Somma.
With the days getting shorter and winter creeping closer, this is a good week to hunker down and catch some dark, industrial bands playing around...
The Village Voice says of our album and show tonight, "these songs seethe with the fury and alienation of living in a land that has rejected you. Their Elsewhere album-release party is sure to provide a dark catharsis."

The latest offering from Joshua Strawn and Zohra Atash does away with almost all comfort: "Nonlinear sounds, the rhythm of tyrants, of dimwits.”
You can listen to Savage Exile in its entirety, streaming now via @noiseymusic who say, "It’s claustrophobic, occasionally brutal, and completely relentless." Release show tomorrow night at Elsewhere!

"disquieting...steam-pressed, fang-baring" is a pretty excellent description of our latest preview track from the new album which you can now hear over at @self-titledmag
