Me: is that good
"Preparing [for the role of Nikki] was really fun. We got to watch a lot of fun movies, and kind of pick and choose, like a puzzle, what we wanted in the film. Moments that we took inspiration from, and made them our own." — Inde Navarrette for Fandango "We watched Get Out, and focused on a lot of the moments where characters are showing an emotion underneath but saying something completely different [on the surface], and how horrific that is. There's a scene where [Nikki] is saying, "no", and there is a [similar] scene in Get Out [which we took inspiration from]." — Inde Navarrette for A Shot Magazine Obsession (2026) Dir. Curry Barker Get Out (2017) Dir. Jordan Peele

nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.
LOVEEEE wish!nikki being faceless. her face being backlit or her entire body being shadowed in darkness. wearing clothes that are completely removed from her style before the wish. having a higher pitched voice than she did before. not being able to smile the same. it’s not just that nikki’s face hidden in shadow, everything that made her HER has also been covered up with something else. wish!nikki doesn’t have a face of her own, she just has what bear wants projected onto her.

Wuthering Heights by Tasia M S
Julien Baker covers No Children by the Mountain Goats + an introduction from John Darnielle
➕
Excerpt from “I Hope We Both Die: How The Mountain Goats Wrote The Ultimate Anthem To Dysfunction” an interview with John Darnielle
When An Abuser Dies
Darnielle: …and then Sunset Tree was after my stepfather died. He died and my sister called in the middle of the night to say “Mike’s dead.” Then I went on tour a month or two later and stuff started to crack open. It was really amazing. I just started to feel free with my feelings and––
Maron: In general.
Darnielle: Well, no, with those–––just my vision, my ability to think about that time and how far I’ve come. I lived in Iowa at the time––
Maron: Do you think that some impact was that, you know, the abuser was dead?
Darnielle: Absolutely…I ask survivors when they come up to me at the merch line, “has your abuser died yet?” And they will say, “no” and I will say, “I want you to be ready, cause it is, I hate to say this (I don’t wish death on anybody), it is wonderful when your abuser dies. It’s wonderful, it’s like nothing in the world. It’s like you are free.” There’s a feeling that you will never be free of what you were, you know, there’s that…But to know that the person who used to hurt you no longer can is very very very deep. It’s unbelievable.
Maron: Do you forgive him?
Darnielle: No.
Since I'm therapist-posting recently:
Legitimately self-compassion is the biggest mental health life hack of all time. I'm NOT talking about self-esteem. You do NOT have to like yourself one bit. You don't have to believe that you're a good person who deserves good things. You just have to believe that you're a person who deserves the things all people deserve.
You can't get from "I'm the Worst" to "I'm a worthy and lovable person" without passing through "I'm just a regular fuckup like everybody else."
Try it on. If you're really addicted to being mean to yourself, you can start by framing it as I'm Not Special. Embrace being a regular fuckup like everybody else.

"what if someone regrets transitioning" if you are 18 or over in free country usa you can walk into any tattoo parlor and ask for a tattoo that will be on your body forever and ever and ever and they will give it to you with the understanding that if you dont like the result or you regret it later that's your fucking problem and not theirs
