looking back on s9 and s10 of skam france, it sucks how maya, an lesbian asian woman, known for her activism, was really given the short staff during production of these two seasons. her season could have been an interesting prelude to season 10, but unlike anaïs, a heterosexual white woman, maya, a queer WOC, wasn’t given the space to fully deal with her intersections of identity during the 10 weeks of her season and that’s sad, especially as in the end of the show, she is still alone. maya never wanted to be alone; she feared it. but across the skamverse, maya’s treatment as a character is not an irregularity. POC are continually short-shrifted to uplift the white characters. continually. just look at druck s6 and druck s8–the network didn’t like what happened when ava stood up for herself in s6, so what does she become in s8? a groupie following mailin, The White Feminist Archetype, like a puppy dog. as i praise what s10 of skamfr did, it’s so important to note that maya etienne deserved better, as bilal did. as aurelien did. as yann did. as imane did. as ava did. as fatou did. as the amiras did. as the sanas did. as zoya did. as josefina did. as megan did. as jordan did. as shay did. as yasmina and moyo did. as ezra, liv, and imaan did, and so on. skam is shitty when it comes to POC. always has been.
