Healthy male friendships are almost as rare in mainstream fiction as gay male relationships, and maybe more rare in fanfiction. Let men be wonderful friends without pushing a romantic relationship, just like men and women should be able to be wonderful friends without the pressure of a romantic relationship.

The fact that they’re afraid people will assume they’re gay is part of the problem. Men should absolutely be able to have close male friendships and feel comfortable expressing that closeness, but choosing not to do so because they don’t want people to think they’re gay is internalized homophobia. It’s a product of our culture because our culture is fucked. The assumption that close male friends must be fuckin is also homophobic.
