My silly idea for a Downton Abbey watch-through - If you watch 66:45 minutes of DA per week, you can watch it all in a year (incl. 3 movies) - I will also take note of what Thomas is doing because he's the best, no notes - For some reason, I also want to take stock of what people are drinking. You could make this into a drinking game, but I don't think you should ...

Chunk 27/52: S4E5 (remainder) + S4E6 + S4E7 up until 2:52 (when Anna leaves the room after saying: "Go home and pack.")
What is Thomas up to?
wants Baxter to tell him everything she hears upstairs, puts pressure on her, and says she needs to be loyal to him first
tries to get Rose's secret (a band playing at Robert's birthday) out of Mrs Hughes, unsuccessfully, and gets the bits that he does hear completely wrong
is taken aback when he sees what Rose's surprise actually is

What is Thomas up to?
let's Edna know that he knows about her conversation with Tom
is delighted to see Edna go, and they both say what they truly think of each other (it's not good)
says he's got someone in mind for Cora's new lady's maid (I was wondering why he was happy to see Edna go when they seemed like buddies just a few episodes earlier, but getting Baxter in is of more use to him)
gets Baxter her job, who is (surprisingly) a nice person
helps Baxter by telling her what Cora likes to hear
tries to get better liked via Baxter, who has no problem making friends
reveals that he wants her to tell her everything she hears (like O'Brien used to do)
also says that Anna is no enemy but of no use to him because she's incorruptable

Chunk 21/52: S3E8 (remainder) + S3 Special Part 1 up until 17:29 (when Tom says, "You don't need my permission.")
What is Thomas up to?
sneaks up on Bates and tells him that he's envious of his happy life
has learned that being nice is what got him into trouble (oh no)
(surprisingly, Bates teams up with Mrs. Hughes to help Thomas)
had already accepted his fate and was considering going to Bombay
hands Bates the weapon to beat Mrs. O'Brien (whom he didn't suspect? Bates has to tell him it's her? He really isn't great at scheming on his own)
the weapon works wonders (and Bates doesn't even know what it's about)
most importantly, he's great at cricket
the conundrum of Mr. Barrow's future position is discussed, and he ends up outranking Bates, which makes him regret helping
(Robert wants to keep his best cricket player and manages to appease Jimmy by making him first footman, and to talk Alfred, who had called the police after all, out of pressing charges)
enjoys his promotion, but things are akward now with Jimmy
meets Mr. Tufton, the new grocer, with distrust (and is proven right)
seems to be happy and at ease talking with those that stayed back at Downton while the family is in Scotland

Chunk 20/52: S3E7 (remainder) + S3E8 up until 20:25 (when Mrs. Hughes says: "He may have given Thomas the wrong impression without meaning to.")
What is Thomas up to?
will lose his job now that Bates is back
has Mrs. O'Brien in his ear how Jimmy keeps talking "all soppy" about him to Alfred - which we never see Jimmy do
has one lovely talk with Jimmy, and in swoops Mrs. O'Brien and fills his head with ideas
he was hit really hard by Sybil's death, is about to lose his job and accommodations, and keeps hearing from O'Brien that Jimmy really likes him - all of which brings him to go to Jimmy's room
takes an extremely high risk by doing so (it's also not the greatest idea to just kiss someone who is asleep)
Alfred saw him and Jimmy
tries to mend things over breakfast, which makes the whole affair even worse (now Jimmy puts his flirting with Ivy on really thick)
(Mrs. O'Brien keeps scheming, just this time it's against Thomas; gets Alfred to tell Carson what he saw)
faces Mr. Carson several times, who says some horrible things to him
is still supposed to get a good reference
he is also a great cricket player (which is important to Robert at least)
(O'Brien just can't let it fucking go. He is getting fired, but no that's not enough, she still has to try and egg Jimmy on.)
has to hand over the position of Robert's valet to Bates ("to the victor the spoils")
is to be let go without reference (ie no further job prospects) because Jimmy now threatens to go to the police, and Carson wants to avoid that scandal
still defends Jimmy (knows that people don't always do and say as they mean - especially when O'Brien is involved)
is brought to his lowest point yet, and finds a friend in Mrs. Hughes, who is neither shocked nor disgusted and fights his corner

9:25 Edith and Violet: tea
10:03 Isobel: tea

Chunk 19/52: S3E5 (remainder) + S3E6 + S3E7 up until 3:18 (when Matthew says: Why not? You could see Rosamund and buy some new clothes.)
What is Thomas up to?
is absolutely distraught by Sybil's death
admits to saying things he doesn't really mean
says Sybil was one of the few people in his life who were kind to him
seems fine to be comforted by Anna, but snaps out of it when Mrs. Hughes appears
keeps touching Jimmy because Jimmy doesn't object, and Jimmy doesn't object because O'Brien told him he shouldn't if he wants Thomas to put him in a good light with Lord Grantham
agrees that being different doesn't make you a traitor (might also be reading more into this statement than was actually meant by it)
(It's as Mrs. Patmore said: "the problem with the young people is that they're all in love with the wrong person" - and that goes for Thomas, too)
is not happy about Bates's return, unlike everyone else

Chunk 15/52: S2 Christmas Special (remainder) + S3E1 up until 53:26 (when Violet says: "Dreadful woman.")
What is Thomas up to?
claims his dance with Violet and manages to keep her upright
also dances with Edith, and I can never help and think that both of them get an amazing ending to their story when no one would have thought so in the early days
sees Mr Bates as a convicted murderer, which is in contrast to what most think in the house
finally, is Robert's valet
isn't nice to Alfred, the new footman who is O'Brien's nephew, which causes more of a rift
puts the idea of a strike in Daisy's mind
doesn't like that he might also have to look after Matthew, who won't keep Molseley as a valet
agrees with Carson on one thing, and that is that both of them are too good to look after Tom, the ex-chauffeur
refuses to help Alfred to become a valet because noone helped him (which is always a great mindset)

Chunk 14/52: continue S2 Christmas Special up until 1:23:29 (when Bates says: "I can't have you grey faced and in perpetual mourning")
What is Thomas up to?
gets a really stupid idea involving Robert's dog Isis
doesn't see a problem with having maids help with serving, in contrast to Carson
back at the planchette board with O'Brien (being mean to Mrs Patmore)
wonders if there will be a valet position open now that Bates is in prison (which opens the first rift between him and O'Brien)
goes through with his stupid idea of hiding the dog when Carson confirms that he won't become valet
steals and hides Robert's dog, is kept from "finding" her when the search is on, and is panicking when he can't find her at all anymore later on (he just really isn't talented at being a criminal)
has the best bewildered faces when Mrs Patmore uses the planchette board to tell Daisy something
is extremely lucky and manages to pull off the dog thing in the end because he actually has been looking for her (and looks wretched enough to sell it)
Robert is willing to give Thomas a chance
seems as relieved as all the others that Bates won't hang

Chunk 13/52: S2E8 (remainder) + S2 Christmas Special up until 16:44 (when Mrs Patmore says: "You're quite a new girl.")
What is Thomas up to?
offers to help out when more and more people get sick, won't get paid but it earns his keep
sure has the disapproving "Butler look" down when he interrupts Mary and Richard
offers to bring something up to Mr Carson, and is probably happy that Mary sees him do it (Carson admits that they might need him working there, however Mary warns him that Thomas might want to take his place, which ... yeah? At some point he probably should)
noone seems to like it, but he has successfully made himself indispensable (and I can't blame him, he's gambled and lost everything, of course he's grasping for every straw he gets)
is a full member of the staff again by Christmas
has some fun with O'Brien making the young girls (Daisy) think that they're talking to ghosts
will never really have Robert's trust
temporary valet of Lord Hepsworth
Drinks, drinks, drinks

Chunk 12/52: S2E7 (remainder) + S2E8 up until 20:24 (when Mary and Matthew are dancing to the grammophone and Mary says "What did you say?")
What is Thomas up to?
looking like a true 1920s gangster, he shows his black market stash to O'Brien
convinces Mrs. Patmore to take some of his groceries, which turn out to be two thirds plaster dust and already "old when Adam were a boy"
understandably has a breakdown over having lost every penny and then some, and not having a job anymore
can't count on Carson's sympathy and needs to find some other place to stay (Carson is throwing all of that "I'm not a servant anymore" back in his face)
admits that the way his hand looks doesn't make finding a new job easy
isn't someone who is associated with being helpful
