Idk if it’s possible to separate the art from the artist without losing a large portion of the art
In terms of Art VS Artist, I think the contents of Miracle Musical/Tally Hall do not include or promote his recent behaviour or mentality notably in subtext or the main body, and there is a level of “dilution” from the fact that it’s a collaborative work with other, well-meaning and stable people worked on these projects; it was not just Joe alone. His contributions would’ve been approved by the other members at the time I assume. He may have been the frontman and lead voice for MM, but in actuality he had collaborators working on much more than you’d think on the internal side.
I’m saying this with the idea that, for example, when I was into Harry Potter in the very early days of Joanne Kathleen Rowling’s recent admittance of disgusting views, I could ignore it for a while because they “weren’t written into the Harry Potter books” only to learn when I was older that oh yes, the absolutely are riddled with her anti-everything hateful and spiteful views. She wove it very much into everything she wrote. And also her writing just isn’t good in general.
So I guess what I’m saying is that it depends on how much of yourself you put into it, and how much of Joe you can take out of it. A lot of Hawaii: Part II was inspired by other narratives, so it only really briefly goes through Joe’s interpretation of them, and then it runs through the other collaborators/band members again before release.
It’s entirely up to you what level of art vs artist separation you personally accept. It gets so dicey with art. There’s a part of me who sees myself in every single piece I make with a belief that there’s not much way around it when you’re creating, and also the idea that Joe was described by the other band members as a completely different person around the time he was a part of Tally Hall and Miracle Musical in comparison to his mental stability issues now.
My idea that there is a level of “taintedness” to whatever they create could not resonate with you at all that’s ok. I honestly could change my mind about this whole subject tomorrow, I don’t know. Also, for me, there’s a lot at stake. I built a full scale narrative that is very important to me off Hawaii: Part II and now I need to figure out what to do about it.
I’m completely aware of how many other people worked on HPII. But it wasn’t something that would exist without him, and he’s the one who put them all together.
I was a fan of tally hall because I was a fan of JH, not the other way around. I also have weird personal reasons I can’t engage with tally hall anyway because of Rob Cantor. Nothing he did, just my own issues I’m working through. I got into Tally Hall and MM (more seriously, I was into the music before but not enough to think about it besides when I heard it come on) and realized all were connected after being recommended his MV for Bring Her Along.
I take the example of Harry Potter as well. It’s completely littered with her way of thinking. I’ve seen the same patterns with JH and HPII. I have my own opinions about his mental state and I don’t think he’s an evil mastermind. It seems like he’s a slave to things he doesn’t understand the gravity of, to me. Of course I don’t know and only a professional who knows him personally could say for sure. I get this idea from what his friends have said about him.
I think I’ve managed to separate HPII to a good extent because of my OCs. It still feels like a huge chunk of it is missing without him though. I love learning of the creative process behind works I enjoy, it’s part of what makes things special to me. An off topic note would be that I’m really getting into ‘mother horse eyes’ and I wish the creator revealed themselves so I could learn more about the inner workings of the story. It’s genius how connected everything is.
This is very true too. As much as I (we?) could try to separate him, he is still a part of it regardless. And I completely understand how being into JH first and TH/MM second could turn it all upside down (as I discovered them and associate them in reverse order)
I can see how JH’s thinking could be seen in MM too, I spent much of my time idly attempting to interpret it from his point of view before the allegations. His apparent way of thinking and his creative process of HPII interested me the same as it seems to have interested you. I also don’t think he’s an evil mastermind either, but he does seem not in the right state of mind and I hope he’ll get help someday.
