now that it’s been almost a year, can i say that i’m actually glad the Homestuck pilot wasn’t hyped that much and didn’t receive the attention and support the creators probably assumed it would? it was all this fandom talked about for like a month or so and now people only care about it for frames they can use as aesthetic profile pictures.
notice how the only people who are still excited and still supporting of it are either older fans that haven’t re-read a single panel in over 10 years, or fans who don’t really pay attention to character development and are only in the fandom for the “weird kid” media.
i’m not hating because it’s new material and “new = bad”, but from these 11 minutes alone we can already tell the show would be a disaster.
and why do i say this? well…
reason 1/2: Homestuck is not a “classic” comic: the website and its visuals are crucial, you can’t turn that into an animated show.
let’s start by saying that Homestuck cannot be turned into a show or a movie regardless of who’s creating it. it just wouldn’t work. it’s not a “classic” comic like Invincible, it’s a webcomic whose entire vibe is built around being a semi-interactive website.
you can’t replace the pesterlogs and the “minigames” dialogues with phone calls; yes, there are some real life dialogues between the characters, so in some cases it can be done, but for the rest… what about the typing quirks? the links Dave and Terezi sent each other? the gifs that appear when Meulin and Kurloz interact? you can’t just get rid of all that iconic stuff.
and the “minigames” themselves and Terezi’s interactive passwords! how can you turn all that into animated scenes? it’s a crucial part of the comic!
and the battles with the guardians are supposed to look like old videogames’ fights. that is also iconic and can’t be replaced with that goofy cartoonish battle we saw in the pilot between John and Dad, it just doesn’t give off the same vibe.
see, the problem isn’t that animation has no place in Homestuck, it absolutely does—we have the flashes to prove it works and it looks amazing. it just can’t be the only way to narrate the story.
we also have to keep in mind that the comic constantly changes artstyle. sprites, sprite mode, hero mode etc…. it looks natural and cool when it’s a bunch of still pictures/gifs or a short animation (the flashes with sudden, drastic artstyle changes tend to be pretty chaotic so it fits), but you can’t apply this to a whole animated show with a normal show pacing.
…okay, let’s say we ignore all this. you’re just glad to see more content of your favorite character, that’s fair. but i think we need to remember what studio we’re talking about here.
reason 2/2: the character writing we’ve already seen and Vivziepop’s writing style of female characters…
i mean, just think of John and Dave. John cursed constantly, and yes Homestuck does have curse words and no i’m not some sort of puritan who gets offended at that, but in the comic they’re not constant and forced, and also not used as if they were a punchline; John’s dialogue sounds unrealistic and out-of-character. and Dave… in the comic, he hides his emotions with stoicism, but in the pilot he uses a shit-eating grin instead, and plus he’s very expressive when talking to John. these are not the same characters we’ve read about.
before i go on a rant about how no person who works in Vivziepop should be allowed to write female characters ever, let me reveal something criminal about myself: i used to enjoy Vivziepop’s work. shocker, right? i was a HUGE fan of Helluva Boss from 2021 to 2023, and to me the Hazbin Hotel pilot looked promising compared to what the official show ended up being like. so, i’m not hating on Vivziepop-styled character writing without knowing what it’s like, as it’s literally the reason i stopped watching those shows.
Vivziepop’s female characters are very flat compared to the much more layered male characters. their flaws are only briefly shown and, if they are, they don’t cause any destruction. a female character who does have big flaws is only allowed to be a villain (hi Stella hi Verosika), while equally deeply-flawed male characters are allowed to be heroes or at the very least part of the main cast. and don’t get me started on Millie: she’s one of the three protagonists of Helluva Boss, but she is so flat and so much of a mary-sue that, when the writes were supposed to create an episode centered around her, they couldn’t make a single scene without Moxxie. her character is literally nothing without her being her husband’s wife. that would be fine if we were talking about a side character, but she’s literally supposed to be a protagonist! a whole season and a half (i also watched most of the second season’s episodes but by that point i had already stopped liking the show) and they couldn’t do anything with her only, even Fizzaroli (who is a SIDE CHARACTER) had an episode centered around him (2 if you count the one about his relationship with Blitzø). oh, and also… Charlie and Vaggie are supposed to be the main couple of Hazbin Hotel, but the show focuses more on Huskerdusk than it does on them. this relationship had potential to be more complex, especially after Charlie discovered Vaggie was an angel, but they didn’t show any of the personal conflict that both characters should’ve felt… and they got back together immediately, like nothing happened.
with this being said, are you guys sure you want these people to write Homestuck’s female characters? are you sure you want Rose, Jade, Vriska, Terezi, Kanaya and many other important, complex characters, that achieved as much as the male ones, to be written by someone whose female characters have no depth and barely any screen time compared to male side characters? i think not.
yes, i’m aware Hussie was among the pilot’s writers. but i think it’s pretty clear that Hussie doesn’t really care about their own characters that much anymore and just wants to profit from them, so they changed them according to what the Hellaverse shows’ audience enjoys. i’m definitely guilty of making them profit, i bought that damn Tavros plushie that i have to wait three months for, but at least i don’t pretend Hussie chose to be associated with the creator of some of the worst queer media ever created because they’re a genuine fan of it (and the same thing goes for that mf Toby Fox, there’s no way the creator of Undertale thinks Hazbin Hotel is good queer media…).

i have no problem with the bottom pairings, just the hypocrisy of the people who support them while condemning whoever likes the top ones.
for some of you guys, male characters have no layers and no flaws ever and it shows. you’re so delusional and parasocial about them that the moment someone (a REAL, living person) acknowledges they’re flawed you immediately start harassing them, throwing insults and accusations.

i mean this first one is maybe a bitttt of a stretch, but considering the whole rose and vriska situation i think its reasonable. at around 10:38 (youtube timestamp) in [S] Cascade, gamzee is shown corresponding with doc scratch!
its small, so i'll put a translation in alt text if you cant read it
the first thing i wanna point out is, surface level. that gamzee is talking to doc scratch at all. you Know. but that on its own isnt particulary damning, so lets talk about it some more ::::0 gamzee saying "thats all done" should raise some alarms, because its implying he was carrying out orders given to him; which would mean they had a longer correspondence than just this set of messages.
small irrelevant tangent here, you can skip to the next paragraph if you'd like: considering doc scratch's insistence to "not turn your back on the bodies", plus the fact that storing the bodies was eventually beneficial for lord english (gamzee prototypes his friends into the alpha kid's sprites -> preventing the kids from reviving their guardians to continue to fight the condesce -> who was, in turn, working for lord english), you could even argue that doc scratch mightve actually instructed gamzee to decapitate all the corpses and preserve them, but hey thats another topic entirely.
i think its interesting that prior to gamzee's freak out, he had absolutely no reason to be devoted to lord english. sure, lord english is, in a way, the mirthful messiahs, but gamzee already has anti-casteist beliefs that directly contradict his religion. see his second conversation with tavros
sure, right after that he goes into foreshadowing of The Incident, but i'd argue that casteism directly contradicts his religion (see: the grand highblood also being a devotee (?) but still perpetuating the culling of lowbloods as righteous). Especially combined with this detail from the equius conversation
which implies that gamzee is... naturally non-violent, actually? (for reference, john, noted good guy, straight up murders all his imps; like you're supposed to! they're video game npcs!) Despite having no moral obligation to do so, he goes out of his way to befriend the imps he has every incentive to kill, just like tavros did. Summarized: gamzee suddenly deciding to worship lord english is some retcon lazy-writing bullshit.
Perchance. theres also the fact gamzee describes lil cal (who's lord english/doc scratch/whatever the fuck. theyre interchangeable honestly) as "helping him discover who the real messiahs are" while screaming at dave.
a lot of people talk about gamzee like he had his world view shattered, and then decided of his own free will to Fuck Everything Up as revenge. but, hey, no. he DIRECTLY SAYS here that LORD ENGLISH. WAS HELPING HIM "REFIGURE OUT THE REAL REALITY ABOUT MIRACLES" he had LIL CAL IN HIS EAR LIKE THIS
AFTER A HORRIFIC CRISIS OF FAITH, TELLING HIM WHAT WAS REAL.
so yeah, some form of grooming was definitely involved to get him so ready to fuck shit up. whether it was sexually abusive (see doc scratch's comments towards rose) or just regular abusive? i mean thats your interpretation, but. cmon. Doc Scratch. still though! nonsexual grooming still counts as grooming ^^^^_^^^^
now, was this intended by the author? LMFAOOO NO....... thats why i said accidentally ::::) Narrative framing is important to consider when talking about authorial intention, and, well there's really not much here to talk about ::::(. we already know how doc scratch's predatory behavior is depicted, mostly through vriska, and really, in gamzee's case? it's never elaborated on, or even thought about, past this brief five second mention. We're supposed to believe gamzee's just kind of Like That and did everything on his own consensual accord, irrelevant to outside influences. And thusly, thats how he's painted in the surrounding narrative and author commentary. gamzee does not Get to be a complex character like vriska does. it doesnt matter he was also just a kid.

okay, now here's the second example, and it's gonna be much shorter. Because, one; it involves the epilogues, and i dont really wanna talk about those; and two, everything that can be said about this whole situation has already been said, and by people much smarter than me.
im gonna assume everyone has a vague understanding of how gamzee... is, in the epilogues, but i know a lot of people won't have seen specific examples about how aggressively he's sexualized for just doing normal shit. ::::(c And, more importantly, this specific detail: ages in the epilogues are a bit murky, and this was a bitch to try and track down, but since tavros crocker is a baby here, gamzee should be around 16 to freshly 18, while jane and jake are at least older than 23. this is from chapter 18 of the candy epilogues
keep in mind gamzee was pulled out of the fridge and into the candy timelines directly before [S] Collide, making him 15-16. meanwhile, everyone else was 23. He was a teenager, surrounded by adults seven years older than him. everyone else shouldve known he was still a child, and yet jane entered sexual relationship with him. I can't state enough how EVERYONE treats him like this. EVERYONE around him was complicit in this, especially jake. oh my god. oh my god?
again, i doubt this was intentional, and was probably an oversight in the same way gamzee and vriska was an oversight. but shit. holy shit. i havent even talked about the racism and this is already so long.
