Zo must have heard the footsteps before Lucky did. Her body lay low to the ground, her eyes shining bright yellow in the shadowy darkness beneath the coats beside the door. There was a knock, a yelled ‘come in’, then it opened. Then, barely a foot in the door-
“Fuck!”
“Zoloft! Stop that!” Lucky held Zo tightly, facing her towards Dennis who was now gently rubbing at his ankle. “Dennis is a friend! FRIEND! We’re nice to our friends.” She then placed the cat on the floor and watched her scurry toward the window with it’s curtains drawn to bask in the morning sun.
Dennis stood just inside the door, his backpack slung over one shoulder and a duffle in his hand. “Think she’s acting out cause she knows I’m stealing you away for two weeks?”
Lucky chuckled, wrapping her arm around his shoulder.. “I think she’s going to act like that so long as you’re a man.”
He moved his duffle to the other hand, bringing his arm around her back and leaning into her. “So there’s no hope of ever winning her over?”
“Unlikely.” She said pulling away. “Alright, that’s all my bags,” She started, pointing at the three bags beside Dennis’s feet. “Keys are on the table if you want to load up your bags. I just have to fill Zo’s water bowl and we can get out of here. Do you wanna stop at Dunkin’ before we hit the road? I’m dying for a bacon, egg and cheese with a donut.”
“I’ve been too nervous to eat breakfast so that sounds awesome. I’ll start carrying these out to car,” He points to her bags then grabs the keyring from the stand beside the door. “These are your keys right?”
Lucky nods, “Yeah but you don’t have to do that I’ll help just give me a minute.”
Dennis shrugs her off, “Don’t worry about it, finish up, say goodbye to Zo and I’ll get this stuff.” He opens the door and pushes her suitcase out in front of him.
“Thanks Den, I’ll be quick and grab whatever's left.” She responds but Dennis waves her off, the door already half closed behind him. “Alright Zo,” She approaches the cat, reaching out to pet her tummy as she’s sprawled out in the sun. “I’m gonna be gone a while but Mel is gonna come around to take care of you. You’re gonna be good for her right? Yeah I know you will. Alright, enjoy your sun. I’ll see you in twelve days. I love you.” Lucky kisses the top of Zo’s head and turns around to find Dennis with the last bag slung over his shoulder. “Put that down, you got the rest I’ll get this one.” She says reaching for it.
“Nope I’m good let’s get out of here. See ya Zoloft!” He yells back and runs out the door before Lucky can jerk the bag from his hands.
By 9 am the pair were set out on the road with Dennis behind the wheel after a drawn out disagreement over who took the first shift. His muscles were tighter than they’d been when he’d arrived at her door that morning. Lucky sighed as she pushed her seat back and popped her feet onto the dashboard in front of her.
“So is there anything I should know about you before we get to Nebraska? You’re family aren’t like a pack of serial killers right?”
“No they aren’t. And if you could take your feet off the dash, please. I’d like to arrive at our destination in the same number of pieces we started with, thank you.” Dennis reaches out, pushing her feet back to the floor.
“Man that trauma really got to you the other day huh?” She asks, wiggling in the seat, trying to find another comfortable position.
“And it didn’t you?” He throws back, his hands both now steady on the wheel.
“I wasn’t in the trauma, I was in pediatrics with the RSV baby.” Finally settling into the seat, and turning to look at him.
“Whatever happened with him?”
“PICU admitted him when his O2 dropped again. His lips got blue. It was awful.”
Dennis shakes his head. “Kissing babies man, couldn’t be me.”
“Speaking of babies, you excited to see your nieces and nephews? Theres a ton of them right?”
He nods. “Yeah. I’ve got the three brothers; Wayne, Curtis, and Paul. And they’re all married with kids. Wayne and Emily have five, Curtis and Nora have two and one on the way, and Paul and Liz have five. The last two coming from their post divorce settlement hook up.”
“Oooo sounds messy.” She smiles, reaching for her drink.
“You don’t know the half of it.”
“I probably should, given that we’re supposed to be in a relationship. I would tell my partner all about my family drama.”
Dennis let’s his eyes drift to her for a moment, smiling back at her before turning back to the road. “Basically Liz was dating Curt in high school, they broke up, she hooked up with Paul to get back at him she ended up pregnant because god forbid we teach sex ed so they got married at like nineteen. Curt and Paul were at each other’s throats for a while but Curt met Nora and got over it enough for Paul to be the best man at their wedding.”
“Well at least they are close now right?”
“Yeah they were always attached at the hip and from what Mom says things are weird sometimes but that they’re still best friends. Anyway like two years ago Liz and Paul separated, got divorced and then literally like the day it was finalized they hooked up, she got pregnant, had the twins and in the last couple months have been talking about getting remarried. Something about remembering why they cared about each other in the first place.”
“That’s actually kind of sweet in a weird way.”
“Theres actually a couple odd love stories in my family.” Dennis laughs, eyes drifting to her again, her attention solely on him.
“Tell me another?” She asks
He shakes his head “It’s not really stuff you need to know.”
“Oh come on Denny please?” She begs, hand resting gently on his arm. “Normal couples gossip about their families it’ll be weird if I don’t know anything about yours.”
His cheeks heat from the contact and he tries to hold back his smile. “How about this, I didn’t want to go to my sister’s wedding because I’m embarrassed about being the last single sibling.”
Lucky takes her hand back, and cocks her head as she continues to look at him. There are bags under his eyes and his cheeks are still tinged pink. His lips are half turned up but his jaw is clenched. He’s handsome, so so handsome, and young. Too young to be embarrassed by being single. “You’re 27,” The same as she was. “What’s the problem with being single at 27?” The same as she was.
He reaches out quickly, his hand falling to her thigh and quickly being yanked back. “There isn’t one” He assured. Both hands back on the wheel again. “Logically I know that. But no one in my family has been unmarried after 25, even Val being 25 is late for my family.” He sighs, shaking his head. “Gran started telling her she wasn’t getting any younger five years ago.”
“Wow” She breathed out softly and leaned back, now facing the windshield once again.
“I love my family” He assured. “And they are such generous and loving people, but they don’t understand why I wouldn’t make having a wife and children my priority.”
Lucky scoffed, rolling her eyes. “As if you haven’t been in school 8 of the last 10 years.”
“They had a problem with that too.”
“Why?”
His shoulders dropped, recalling the plan that had been set before him nearly 10 years earlier. “I was supposed to go to college, study theology, become a pastor, marry my high school girlfriend, have a dozen kids and never leave Nebraska.” He sighed, his voice slow and gentle, pained. “When I went to med school, no one but Val and Emily talked to me for a year.”
Shock crossed Lucky’s face, anger bubbling in her chest and she reaches for his arm again. “Oh my god Dennis I’m so sorry.”
He reaches up, one hand rubbing over his face. “It’s okay now,” he assures. “Dad and my brothers still get tense when I bring up work or someone asks how I’m doing in Pittsburgh but everyone else has accepted that this is what I’m doing; mom just wishes I’d get married too.”
“Dennis.” She drops her hand to the console between them and Dennis takes her hand in his, giving it a squeeze.
“It’s why I couldn’t tell her I lied. She was so so happy on the phone when I said Fiancèe and I couldn’t take that from her.”
She squeezed his hand back then pulled away. “Won’t it hurt more when you tell her the wedding isn’t happening though?”
“Nope.” A smile breaking out across his face. “Cause I’m gonna blame it all on you.”
“You suck!” She yelled, slapping him on the arm.
“Hey I’m driving here!”
The two laugh together before a calming silence settles between them. “So I should act totally awful then? So everyone's relieved when we’ve fake broken up?” She asks, once again turned to face him.
“No, just be yourself, theres no way you could play evil for a whole weekend.”
Faux hurt crosses her face. “Excuse me I could totally pull off evil! I did theater in high school after all.”
“You almost cried seeing a dead deer on the shoulder of the onramp.”
“Even evil has a heart!” She exclaims, bringing her hand to her chest.
Dennis Laughs. “You won’t be able to keep it up around the animals. You’ll lock eyes with the baby goats and immediately melt.”
After only a moment of thought she relents. “You’re so right. I’m too gooey inside to play evil. They’re never going to believe I did anything wrong.”
“Don’t worry, even if I blame it all on you they’ll still blame it on me. But if they love you they’ll take pity on me for having lost someone so great.” The hurt is clear in his voice and even in the smile on his face.
“Dennis-” She starts but is cut off.
“Oh rest stop! Let’s stretch our legs and switch.” And without a thought, he pulls off into the lot; ending their conversation.

I’m glad you’re excited about The Wedding Trip I’m super excited about it myself! I’m hoping to have it written and posted before the end of June but with the reminder (mostly to myself) that I am a mom of 2 extremely young children who are on completely different nap schedules so writing time is super limited.
Unfortunately there is a lack of chubby/plus size/fat romance generally. It’s hard to find it in fanfiction but it’s also difficult to find in published books too, though it has gotten easier in recent years. And this is something that’s bothers me so much and it always has. Then so much of the time their weight plays a large role in the story itself and I don’t think it has to do that either. Idk I have a lot of thoughts about this topic but it all kind of leads me to:

They’d been flooded with trauma after trauma. Code after code. And every time they looked up it was barely minutes that had passed. But they’d finally completed their handover, all of their problems now belonging to the day shift. Crus now stood bundled up from the January wind, leaning against his car as his girlfriend bounced toward him, leaning her shoulder shoulder into his side. Finally taking a breath to watch the sunrise side by side before finding their way home to bed to be ready to do it all over again tonight.
She’d insisted it wasn’t serious, that she’d just rolled her ankle getting out of bed and it was no big deal.
Nevermind that she had to drag her foot as she walked into the ED at 8am after Brendon had bribed her just to come in and let him take a look. He clearly wasn’t pleased as he stood at reception, watching her location until she walked through the door. He pulled her back before she could even be asked her name. It wasn’t until Brendon had her in a wheelchair, pushing her back toward a room that she finally got a look at her ankle that had doubled in size since she last laid eyes on it. Once in the bed he began to poke and prod at her foot as a nurse came in to take her vitals and a resident slipped in before quickly slipping out without even introducing himself. Hours later, testing completed and walking boot in place Brendon situated her in his car before driving back to their apartment he makes himself very clear. “Don’t ever tell me your bone health isn’t serious again.”
