Lenora had a way of pretending it was perfect. Sun-bleached sidewalks, palm trees bending politely in the breeze, houses painted in colors meant to look effortless and happy. From a distance, it was postcards and beach songs and the promise of freedom. Up close, it was rules. Expectations. A quiet, suffocating pressure to look the same, live the same, want the same things. Summer clung to everything hereāskin, asphalt, tempersāand the town moved like it was always half-asleep, lulled by the ocean and the lie that nothing ever really went wrong in California.
On one side of town, black fabric stood out like a bruise against all that light. Will Byers moved through Lenora like a shadow that refused to disappear, boots scuffing the pavement, hair too dark, clothes too intentional. He didnāt soften himself for anyone. Didnāt smile when expected. Didnāt pretend he fit into the sun-soaked dream being sold around him. People noticed him in the way they noticed cracks in sidewalksāsomething wrong, something inconvenient, something they stepped around and pretended not to see. He liked it that way. If Lenora demanded conformity, Will answered with silence, eyeliner-dark stares, and a refusal to bend.
Across town, rebellion looked different. It smelled like salt air and cigarette smoke and cheap incense. Mike Wheeler leaned into the California myth just enough to break it, hair grown past his ears out of spite, shirts loose and faded, laughter easier than his parents ever taught him it should be. He skipped obligations the way other people skipped stones, traded dinner parties for beaches and bonfires, let music and sunshine and substances blur the sharp edges of a life he hadnāt asked for. Where Lenora tried to polish him into something respectable, Mike chose dirt under his nails and sand in his shoes instead.
They hadnāt met yet. Lenora didnāt know what to do with either of them, didnāt realize it was already holding the spark and the gasoline in the same small, restless town. One boy dressed in black, rejecting the light. One boy chasing the sun, trying to burn away everything heād been handed. The summer stretched on, heavy and humming, full of near-misses and wrong turns and moments that felt like they were waiting for something to happen.
And somewhere between the ocean and the quiet streets, between distortion and harmony, Lenora was winding the thread that would pull them togetherāwhether it wanted to or not.
