And when I walk the streets Kings and Queens step aside
I’m here to tell ya honey that I’m bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
—
More Jailbird! Per Han’s lore, roadhounds aren’t born, they just materialize, so Jailbird manifested one day outside a county jail where all the scrub jays harassed the local cats and coyotes got into the trash.
She cannot be trusted. She’ll dig holes in your yard, steal your kids’ toys, release your livestock, bury your mail, and sit outside your window making car alarm noises all night long. It’s a good thing she only weighs thirty pounds, otherwise she’d probably try out world domination just for the hell of it.
Roadhounds belong to @awildhanmonster.
LOOK AT THIS AMAZING GIRL MY FRIEND DREW gosh I adore her so much. What a terrible dog.
And so, the time has finally come! I’ve jumped off the precipice of making these things adoptable, and the reception has been really joyfully humbling! Below is a master post of my collective information on Roadhounds and what I consider their technical “canon”– HOWEVER. IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED A HOUND FROM ME, PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW ANY OF THIS. If you want to take your weird dogbirds and jam them in your own respective headworlds or turn them into something else entirely, you have my full and open blessing to do so! All I ask is for a footnote of being the technical (first draft) creator somewhere. These guys are meant to be for FUN, in whatever way brings you the most joy. If you DO, however, want to see what lore they come with, keep reading!
ROADHOUND FAQ:
What is a roadhound?
“Roadhound” is a catchall term encompassing a group of strange, largely enigmatic, bird-faced canid-type lifeforms sighted worldwide. They are considered by most to be a modern day cryptid, and would be considered a “Safe” Class SCP as a whole despite their numbers and lacking research from observation.
Origin of species:
There is no current consensus on the origin of roadhounds. They always seem to just appear one day along human-made paths of travel where people have walked— dirt roads, hiking trails, highways, etc— seemingly fully formed and mature. No human has ever witnessed the “birth” or emergence of a hound, but this mysterious generation may be associated with traveling, restlessness, or wanderlust. Similarly, there has never been a firsthand account of hounds actively copulating, pregnant, or with young, and it remains unknown whether or not they are even capable of sexual reproduction. No bodies have ever been retrieved for study, and their lifespans can only be guessed upon as “ambiguously long.”
They are sometimes regarded as ill omens or bad luck by the public, given their tendency to appear along stretches of road plagued by car accidents, though this has not in any way been substantiated.
Observed phenotypes:
Roadhounds all follow a loose construction of two major parts: a bird— generally from the corvid family (though passerine and raptor variants have been observed) and a canine— most commonly wildtype variants of wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals and etc. They are almost universally described as having a “doglike body” and tail, functional in shape and of reasonable proportion, a formidable beak, small, but fully formed wings in place of mammalian ears (ear canals are suspected to seat around the “armpit” of the inner wing), and three sets of eyes seated in the bottom half of a long, highly flexible feathered neck. Forefeet, while canine in structure, have diminished fur in favor of tiled scaling up the carpals/metacarpals, with tough pads and a hooked, birdlike talon replacing the dewclaw. Nails are thick and sturdy, but non-retractable.
The bird component, densely feathered and often with an excess of fine bristles around the beak/chin area, can display plumage ranging from drab to offensively colorful depending on species. The body, however, tends to remain neutral in a range of grays, blacks, whites and browns. The false “tail” anchored to their sternum can be flattened, fanned, or pulled up slightly by muscular tension for various types of display. Their wings can also be moved freely, shuffled, flapped or mantled as a key component of body language. Typical specimens can range anywhere from approximately 30-120 pounds, though outliers can and do occur, if infrequently.
Known Behavior:
Roadhounds are (usually) fairly clever, displaying robust intelligence on par with (or surpassing) their component fauna. They seem to have a sense of self-recognition when presented with mirrors and tend towards an inquisitive, playful, and occasionally irritating nature, though this can vary wildly from specimen to specimen. They can and do use crude tools for basic problem solving when available, and often display behaviors suggesting a grasp of concepts such as forethought, altruism, and grief. They may even possess a crude language, though it is poorly understood by researchers.
Curiously, roadhounds all universally seem to lack any prey drive. Despite a meat oriented semi-carnivorous diet, they have never been seen actively hunting live prey and may regard other animals as anything from a companion to a moving toy that must be coddled or harassed. When threatened they may stand their ground, displaying various threat gestures, but prefer flight over an altercation. Shyness and flight radius/“tameness” seems to vary wildly, but a genuine fear of humans is rare.
The majority also seem to have a love bordering obsession of shiny and/or metallic objects, most commonly those associated with automobiles or electronics. They have been observed “collecting” anything from shed scrap metal (generally shed from highway collisions) to hubcaps, dollar coins, tin cans, window decals, side mirrors, jewelry, truck nuts, and more. These trinkets have even (rarely) been used as apparent “gifts” and offered to other life forms, with mixed results.
Vocalizations:
Roadhounds possess impressive sound mimicry and a robust vocabulary ranging from typical bird/canid vocalizations to machine noises and eavesdropped fragments of human language, the latter regurgitated in tinny, childlike voices. Given their frequent proximity to roads and civilization, common “acquired” calls include car horns, squealing tires, NOVELTY car horns, metallic crunching sounds, engines revving, toll booth ringers, car alarms, sirens, variants of SPEED UP ASSHOLE, and etc. They will pepper these noises into their more organic calls seemingly at random, each unique to the individual. If you hear a car alarm going off incessantly at 3 am in the middle of nowhere, with no cars in sight, you may have a visitor.
Diet:
Despite a complete lack of hunting instinct, roadhounds subsist almost entirely on meat: more specifically, on roadkill and scavenged carrion. They prefer fresher carcasses, but are opportunists and generally not picky. More human/urban acclimated individuals have also been seen raiding garbage bins and city dumpsters for a variety of other (presumably food-based) material. Dry cat or dog kibble left on porches is also a commonly raided, even preferred snack, and some individuals have been observed going out of their way to raid farmhouses for the delicacy.
TL;DR:
Roadhounds are anomalous little cryptid dogbirds I’m making purely for fun and if you get one, you should play them in the way that gives YOU the most fun in turn. Cheers, y’all!
More of these guys! I’ve really fallen for this design way more than I thought I would, and uh, may have suckered my buddy Wyrd into suffering with me. I managed to scrape together a decent sort of line template for the crude phenotype today, and she threw down a suggestion of scrub jay/coyote for a potential fellow... roadhound? I’m calling them roadhounds for now. And I went ahead and painted it! She named it Jailbird, and it is now hers. The second lad is of course Highwayman, my first.
I may wind up making a couple of these to try and hock as adoptables or something because I am shamelessly smitten by my own accidental design. Oops.
So I haven’t posted anything to Tumblr in an age again (oopsie!), but I figured it was about high time, so, here we are with a surprise new character! Funny story behind this oddball; a couple nights ago while heavily compromised by Zzquil at 2 am, on the cusp of sleep, I was quick-scrolling through Twitter in a fog and saw this photo on a reference blog I follow. In the blink of whizzing past it, my brain misinterpreted it horribly as some wing-headed eldritch horror, which was of course false, but even after backpedaling to check my sanity it stuck with me, so... here we are! Everyone, meet Highwayman! My dearest soul twin Wyrd was the genius to come up with its name, and I also blame her in part because she encouraged me to run with this whole silly mess.
The details still aren’t entirely clear, but Highwayman is some form of modern cryptid most often found on dark nights along quiet stretches of roads and freeways. It has the body of a wolf, or something wolflike, a beak vaguely similar to a thick billed raven, and a head that could easily be mistaken for the twisted body of a corvid glued onto something else’s neck stump. Speaking of necks, it can do the Bittern Neck Thing somewhat. Its body is predominantly pale off-white, with a smoke gray cape along the back, and glossy blue-black, vaguely iridescent crow feathering from shoulder to beak and rear to tail. It also appears to have birdlike talons in place of a standard dewclaw and leathery scaling up the forefeet. All three sets of eyes are a uniform, reflective wolf gold/amber. The “tail” dewlap thing on its neck can be flared for various displays and pulled up like a bib, or mostly compacted along the sternum.
Despite its appearance, Highwayman is in fact a harmless entity. It appears to lack prey drive completely and is passive, even curious in nature, subsisting entirely on roadkill and scavenged carrion. Its cries are generally birdlike-- about what you’d expect from a raven-- but also frequently mimics various sounds associated with car crashes (ie squealing tires, crunching metal) or, more rarely, human voices. Its “laugh” sounds similar to a kookaburra, and its bark is heavy and discordant, like gravel in a steel drum.
It loves shiny objects and will cheerfully scavenge car accidents for prized bits of steel, aluminum, mirror, etc; for this reason it has become a sort of (wrongly) assumed bad omen around its usual stomping grounds. A shame though, really! Bring it some raw steak or polished dollar coins and it would probably be a good friend.

Long overdue but not forgotten, another portrait from the pile of Pets I Intend To Paint, Dammit!! As a change of pace we have a cat this time, and not just any cat, but the beautiful Loaf, belonging to my incredible idol and fellow artist, Eski. As a freelancer who works from home, this little tortie is her constant companion and muse. Eski and Loaf have both dealt with so much, and I am especially glad to know the former as a dear, dear friend whom I love.
Loaf has been dealing with chronic renal failure the past three or so months, and if anyone out there sees her face and wants to help, I’m sure chucking a cup of coffee her momma’s way would be huge, too. All donations go to funding Loaf’s longterm maintenance care for the rest of her (hopefully long) life with kidney disease. Vet bills over the long term are expensive, and if I can make even a tiny difference in the financial situation of my friend’s life I want to.
Thank you for reading and/or reblogging. I appreciate it a lot. Give your critters a snuggle for me.
One more piece for the tumblr, because insomnia is a fickle, complicated thing sometimes. The third of my photo studies/color practice runs/casual homages to dogs of the internet I admire; this time it’s Chalo the malawian village dog, owned by @streetdogmillionaires-- whose content I have enjoyed now for a long, long time. Everything she posts has a joyful and hilarious prose about it-- never mind that both of her pugs are extremely handsome and good.
I was torn between yanking Chalo or Priya for this because I love both of their aesthetics (and expressions) a whole damn lot, but. Soul dogs (or soul animals for that matter) are a kind of special I think deserves acknowledging. Thus, we arrive upon a portrait of the small fawn god with his gilt halo of sunlight, surveying all that is his to shine on.
@streetdogmillionaires If you want the bigger/working size uh, just gimme a holler! Or if for whatever reason you’d like me to take this down that’s fine too! You have a very beautiful heap of dogs and Chalo has a good wise face.
... Anyway I should probably go to bed, so. See y’all on the other side.
And as promised, the next dog! This one is a present for my beloved @Wyrd66, aka @Wyrddogs, of her dearest darling Miss Bindi the (alleged) McNab(...bish)! Bindi is a wild looking and beautiful sparkledog and I dug through a lot of Wyrd’s photography to find the expression I wanted; took me a couple days to get right, but I’m pretty pleased with it overall!
I’m using a technique for these to fiddle with colors that I parsed out from a post by @tamberella a while back that’s like... flatting on top of a really strong sienna wash, which helps influence overall color of the piece as you layer on more and more stuff. Still learning how to hit my stride with it, but really nice over all!
So I realized through a string of largely unrelated thoughts during the past week that it has quite literally been years since I did anything akin to a master study/still life/drawing from life/etc. Thus in the interest of bettering myself and learning new ways to color, I’ve started painting dogs in my spare time.
My dearest soul twin @wyrd66 (also known as @wyrddogs in the Dogblr side of Tumblr) showed me this post by @spanishmal a few days ago and we were both amazed at how their photo basically looked like an oil painting with the golden hour light/color going on, and I was like, I wanna actually paint it now. Wyrd, being a terrible enabler, said, DO IT DO IT, so, I did.
I am still comically terrible at Tumblr and tried to send it to Mal via asks but I’m not sure if they went through. On the off chance it’s not okay to post this (or you want the full working size for whatever reason), just yell at me and I’ll amend myself. Otherwise consider this uuuh... fanart? Because the photograph was super beautiful and Jadis is a gorgeous looking pup from a gorgeous breed and I totally don’t have an aesthetic crush on every long dog.
I’m currently working on a second to tune out how my country is on fire because dogs are good no matter what, so look out for it in this space soonish? I’m half convinced that this is just gonna become A Thing for me as a chill/zen ritual when I’m not doing commission work. Take care of yourselves out there everyone.
That is certainly one way to go fishing.
It’s Smaugust! The amazing Ick and Jude belong to Han.
OH MY GOSH LOOK WHAT WYRD DID. She captured the energetic dumb glee that is Ick SO well. I can’t stop grinning at it. What nerds.

More factoids on kitsune culture:
My last post was getting incredibly long and it only had three characters on it, but I still wanted to ramble more about how kitsune and their culture work in Wyrd and I’s loserverse, so this is just a post of extra facts and miscellany in no particular order.
-Kitsune can live well over 500 years. As far as anyone can tell, they seem to grow at a fairly “human” pace from birth up until their adult physical peak, at which point their aging process slows to an indefinite crawl. Because of this, it’s almost impossible to tell how old any given kitsune actually is— even between themselves— so they self-identify their birth era/place of origin using a system of poetic prose (basically, a haiku) instead of numerical year.
-A kitsune’s long lifespan is offset by their staggering low fertility rates. There are a number of physiological and environmental factors that come into play, and in order to successfully conceive offspring every one of these must be in alignment. Proper mating/birthing conditions for the species may only happen once every several years in a given area, so kits tend to be had in mass all around the same time. A (short) birth poem is written unique to each bloom of new foxes, who then learn it as their “birthday” signifier and recites it to tell others just how old they are and from what area they originate. The average kitsune will have several dozen of these poems committed to memory at minimum and can recognize them with ease. Outsiders tend to have no idea what the fuck they’re talking about, and generally just assume they’re spouting magical nonsense.
- They’re known for having extremely powerful natural magics, but are just as comically UNpowerful as far as physical prowess goes. Averaging only 30-40 pounds at their largest, kitsune are extremely spindly and light boned in their natural forms, but even MORE so in a humanoid shape. A strong wind could very literally blow them off their feet, which is extremely dignified for a near-mythic creature of legend.
- Kitsune can fully regenerate a lost tail or limb so long as the point of loss isn’t too heavily scarred over, though it takes years due to their slow cell growth. Also, things like limbs tend to look awkward and hilarious for untold periods while they come back in.
- Most kitsune tend to use a first name only, though for legal purposes they’ll adopt what is typically some truncated shorthand of their birth poem for a surname.
- They really do love spherical stones and pearls in jewelry. It’s absolutely A Thing with them. Rounded cabochons are also quite popular for embellishing.
- Because I enjoy including certain stupid aspects in even the most powerful magical creature, get a kitsune properly excited and they’ll still do that squeaky gargling fox chirp (or better, scream)! Most will try to take this secret to their grave, with varying success.
More Ado about Characters:
Alright, now for round 2! The following characters are all more one-offs and have no direct relation to each other quite the same was as Nell/Leonora/Barnes do, so let’s see if I can keep this under novel length.
Remy Green, aka Remy: 17 years old in current canon, and still in the last leg of high school, Remy is, for lack of any better term, a reverse werewolf: perpetually stuck in the form of a gangly wolfdog monster on all nights save the brightest of full moons. Originally just a “normal” human kid just trying to survive through graduation, her entire life wound up turned on its head when an out of control werewolf attacked and bit her while out with friends one night. He was subdued and arrested, even later charged for the negligence and violent assault, but the damage had been done and the virus passed on— in the worst ways.
Remy essentially suffered the equivalent of a severe allergic reaction and anaphylaxis during the first shift, which took hours (normal were shifts should be minutes) and resulted in her parents frantically driving her to the ER in tears. She survived, though the diagnosis— for a fragile kid with shaky self esteem— was, at the time, seemingly a fate worse than death. Despite her form, she never seems to suffer the loss of mindfulness or weakened inhibitions of most werefolk during “peak” moon periods.
Remy has since started learning how to cope with life in a new form she didn’t really want or ask for, and she has the full, unwavering support of her parents, though it’s still a lot for a teenaged kid to handle. I’m pretty sure she wound up being pulled from high school and is trying to finish out her last year and a half or so at home, though she could really use some friends she doesn’t think are “obligated” to love her like her parents are. I think she’s pretty lonely and dealing with a lot of depression issues. Luckily she’ll fall in with Wayne at some point, who’s like a sweet (greasy stoner) older brother, and he and the rest of the Losers can adopt the hell out of her as a little sister and teach her how to not give a fuck about what humans think when you’re a weirdo. She’ll earn her happy ending eventually.
Rose Lund: Absolutely 100% a retooling/transplant of one of my dearest, most beloved, super shitty/earnest self-insert characters as a 12 year old on Neopets and I have NO SHAME AT ALL. Rose is a human mage (they do exist!) around 30 or so, a pale/skinny English-Caucasian mutt with green eyes, straight brown hair, and a penchant for fancifully extra looking dyed bang fringies because she’s stopped giving a fuck. She’s one of those rare people who can strike up a conversation with just about anyone, blessed by a very… unique way with words that’s unintentionally contributed to her internet fame as a slice of life blogger about the day to day trials of pet dragon (well, wyrm) ownership.
Rose has been passionate about rare and magical exotic creatures since she was a wee girl, and developed an obsession with dragons (‘wyrms’ being the correct term for all non-sentient varieties) before she was out of grade school. In college she double majored cryptobiology and spell artistry, then upon graduation, acquired a pair of rare pygmy wyrms— from temperate and tundra subspecies— respectively, as pets, both for personal reasons and to aid in her pursuit of a master’s degree in cryptobiological husbandy.
Pygmy wyrms, it should be noted, are generally terrible pets. While only growing to approximately the size of a house cat (10-12 pounds on average) and sporting the appearance of beautifully miniaturized mythological six-limbed dragons any fantasy nut would fall in love with, they are far from domesticated, exasperatingly precocious, and have the charming habit of expelling flammable gas from a myriad of orifices when startled. They have a distinctive, vaguely musky sulfurous smell about them regardless of cleanliness and are just clever enough to ignore training commands when convenient. Imagine giving a very ornery, very clever raccoon flappy wings with a several foot wingspan, feeding it rotten eggs, and strapping a flamethrower to both ends, then rigging it all with an excitable hair trigger. That is a pygmy wyrm. Rose owns two in an apartment complex: Ice Pack (Packy), who is a pale milk white/ice blue, and Sharky (Sharkbite), who is black and burgundy/red.
Needless to say they’re the loves of her lives and she revolves around them, having garnered a massive internet following thanks to her daily posts about their antics and the realities of exotic pet care. They’re harness trained now and reasonably polite, though this is only due to years of hard work and constant reinforcement. She hopes one day to breed more biddable specimens and help contribute to the conservation of the species worldwide. Also, they’ve made her very good at anti-flammability hexes.
Shun —: known only by her first name, a kitsune who moved into the apartment complex fairly recently with her pet pipe fox, Yuzu. It should be noted that kitsune are particularly long lived among mythicals, though how long exactly that is tends to be hotly debated and unknown by all but the foxes themselves. What is known is how they are extremely slow to age after reaching their peak maturity/fitness, with certain individuals reported over 500 years old and, apparently, showing very little of their age beyond a massive swath of grown tails (nine being the highest on known record). Kitsune typically grow to around 30-40 lbs, outwardly resembling a much large. leggier, more willowy silhouette than traditional foxes, and will begin life with a single tail that splits or “buds” and multiplies over time.
Neurologically they are fairly unique among mammals, possessing a kind of distributed intelligence throughout the body that can give the tails a “mind of their own”, so to speak, in much the same way as octopi or other related cephalopods do. In fact, due to the extremely slow rate of cell death/turnover, a severed kitsune tail will continue to move and attempt “functioning” for weeks, even years by some reports, under correct conditions. Which I’ll get into shortly.
Swerving back to Shun herself, she’s an artist by trade who zigzags between traditional and digital freelance work for a living. Conservation of mass is still in place for humanoid shifts— which all kitsune can voluntarily assume— with predictably small, delicate, androgynous bodies that rarely get above 4’5’’ or so in stature. Features like pointed ears or slit pupils/exposed tails can be morphed or shown as desired, though the chronic perception of being childlike or “cute” regardless of how old they are is a pretty common occurrence. Shun is no stranger to this either, and hates shopping for clothes at non-mythical-specific places because she has to do so in the *really* young children’s department for anything to fit.
Back on the subject of pipe foxes, though— Shun is a kitsune with 3 and 3/4 tails. She had an unspecified accident several years ago in which she lost the final quarter of her fourth tail, but managed to retrieve the piece after several weeks of searching, at which point it was already trying to become a pipe fox. Pipe foxes (at least in this world) are the result of a severed kitsune tail’s survival instincts going horribly wrong (or right) and attempting to restructure themselves for survival, and the amount of tail there (i.e. how much was separated from the body) will determine what becomes of it, though the “starting” process is pretty identical no matter what you do.
If a severed piece of tail has no food, eventually, with time, it will die. If, however, you keep it somewhere safe (like a drawer) and you present it with food (which could be, I don’t know, a chicken leg), it will sense it, and you will see the start of a small, gaping fanged mouth begin to grow from the stump. Once this has formed, the tail will wriggle itself to its prize and devour everything it can, sustaining it. Keep feeding the tail and it will continue to grow legs, organs, features, and a face— though not necessarily in that order. Eventually, you will have a small— usually mouse to rat sized— beautiful white magic fox, prized heavily by black market collectors for its splendor and apparent luck giving properties. A true quarter-tailed pipe fox will live somewhere between 5-40 years, unpredictably. The distributed intelligence of the tail will reform/conglomerate into a brain relatively on par with a modern pet dog, possibly smarter (or much dumber) depending on your luck.
If, however, there is MORE than roughly a quarter tail chopped off, with more of the nervous tissue and mass intact, the pipe fox resulting may appear larger and more robust. Many exotic buyers have been lured into purchasing these creatures from traders without realizing, and years later the unlucky recipient will find their precious fox’s skin suddenly flaccid on the ground like a shed cocoon, having erupted into 75 tinier pipe foxes that will summarily swarm the accessible property to spirit off with literally anything they decide is valuable, never to be found again, often raging like an infestation for days or WEEKS before vanishing forever.
Rumor has it that feeding an entire severed tail will result in 75 tiny pipe foxes bursting forth from the cocoon shell that will each burst into 75 more bug sized foxes each, resulting in a plague of nigh biblical proportions. But that’s never actually been confirmed on record.
Needless to say the kitsune have a lot of protocols for dealing with severed tails and will usually destroy half-formed pipe foxes of unknown origin on the spot. Shun keeps Yuzu as a pet due to being intimately aware of the little rat-sized creature’s origins, and she still had to sign SO many extra insurance papers and wavers before the complex would let her move in.
I am not good at keeping it short, am I? Wow. Well, there you have it! I’d be happy to answer any extra stuff I forgot too if someone has a question. I do love these nerds.
Character Ramblings for Wyrd!
At Wyrd’s behest, I’m trying to write down a little master post of some recent characters she bullied— I mean enabled— me to create. This is for our casual Loserverse world— i.e. the fast-and-loose All The Myths Are True low fantasy trope where a bunch of well intentioned idiots try to get by in an apartment complex for largely mythical creatures. I’ve accidentally made up a lot of new side characters in the past month and it’s getting hard to keep track of them, so here we go!
THE HOMESTEADING SHAPESHIFTER TRIO: AKA NELL, LEONORA AND BARNES
I’m listing these three together on their own because they are an active “couple” (… trio? I’m not sure what the right polyamory term is) who all live together in a more rural part of the county on some acreage generationally owned and tended by Nora’s family line. Their personal plot is pretty manageable (just a few acres) and a small portion of the entire property. They have a little flock of maybe 2 dozen combined sheep and goats, some chickens, and possibly an alpaca. The land is woodsy and picturesque with an old country house they share.
Nell J. Harriet, aka Nell: approximately 32 years old, born intersex, happily nonbinary (pronouns are ‘they’). The tallest of the bunch at around 6’ even, with a pale wiry frame and knobby, angular corners all over. Jet black hair with a striking chunk of white smack dab at the front of the widow’s peak like the trail of a dog’s blaze, one solid brown eye, one split tweaky blue/brown mess. Shifted form is a black and white border collie with (surprise!) heterochromia and a chunky white blaze cutting through the forehead right at the widow’s peak.
Despite being born to a mother with a long family history of (gene-recessive) shifters cropping up every generation, Nell was still a surprise to everyone involved, given that their father had presumably been human. Their mother— who I’ll call Meryl for now— comes from a fairly mundane lineage of canine shifter (while being a non-shifter Rr carrier herself) which typically manifests in early childhood and has a certain period of semi-conscious malleability during the formative years in which things like coat color, length, ear set, and other minor (external) features can be changed through great effort and trial/error before eventually “settling” into a constant, unique physical identity with time. They heal several times faster than average humans, scar less, and tend to show greater physical resilience, taking a few seconds to painlessly and more-or-less fluidly change shape, but lack any kind of “burst healing” mechanic or unusual magical attributes.
Everyone else in the family before Nell had turned out some kind of pleasantly functional “mutt” shape in the end, but Nell erupted onto the scene as a full blown black-and-white border collie looking thing from day 1 of the change as a bouncy toddler. Meryl could only guess that the father (long since vanished from their lives with no hard feelings, the affair was brief) was a similar, incidentally compatible shapeshifter himself, but that’s about as well as anyone can guess since he’s not around to ask.
Nell, for their part, is exactly the kind of plucky, sunshiny, high-energy velcro person you would expect from a border collie on two legs. They struggled in early childhood with some rough ADHD and OCD type tendencies, but managed to get through public schooling with the help of family support/tutoring, and wound up not pursuing college in favor of trying out a more rural living, instead. They met Leonora while bouncing around odd jobs a couple years after high school and the rest is history. They’re much happier now with a largely outdoor existence and animals to tend to, burning off the excess energy that plagued them for years without a direction prior to homesteading. They’re one of those types who thrives with an outlet for physical and mental stimulation but loses their mind for lack of it. As one would expect from any good BC. The farming life is an ideal fit.
Leonora Basso: aka Nora, but only if you’re close to her. Approximately 34-ish, a shameless bohemian woman from a long line of shifters almost functionally identical to Raiker/Nicky’s species, with the exception of taking on the form of giant (thanks, conservation of mass) white maremma type guardian dogs instead of akbash. Built square, stocky, and a little short (probably around 5’4’’), with olive/bronze-y skin, brown eyes, and a giant fluffy mess of fluffy, platinum white-blond hair the exact color and texture of maremma fur.
She’s chill, with admirable patience for things that warrant it and a long fuse for small annoyances, though she’s also the only member of the three to ever knock someone’s teeth out, so take that with a grain of salt. Like any good guardian dog, she’s placid until you start messing with her flock— literally or metaphorically. Then she’ll be the one to quietly walk across the bar and slam your head into the table. She met Nell during a trip to the inner city by complete happenstance when the two hit it off over conversation, during which she invited them to come visit her farm over a public touring weekend, and within weeks wound up dating. Their relationship was exclusive up until Barnes came along and none of them are quite sure how it happened, but they’ve never been in a better place.
Chancellor Barneston Augustine-Kingslay, aka Barnes: and ONLY Barnes, okay. Repeat his full name N E V E R or he’ll just, seriously, die. Of embarrassment. The youngest of the bunch at around 27-28 or so, Barnes was adopted by his (human) parents as a (human, presumably) infant, and had a perfectly normal (human, presumably) childhood until one day when his mother came in and found that her napping four year old was suddenly a napping 40 pound maine coon cat— or at least, what LOOKED a whole lot like one. Needless to say, the following week was a scramble of buying every “Help! My Child is a Shapeshifter, What Do I Do!” parenting book off Amazon and learning how to cope with a toddler who could suddenly vault over double stacked safety gates unaided, but they learned how to adapt, and life continued on happily for the little family anyway. He’s an average sort, and arguably handsome to some: about 5’8’’, not especially pale or tan, hazel eyed, and sporting what looks like perpetually dark-ticked mouse brown hair, cut short. He performed well enough in public school with a mostly human peer group who went largely unaware of his “talents” and even went on to earn a bachelor’s in business/finances/something akin, which seemed like the thing to do. He wouldn’t describe himself as unhappy in his accomplishments; by every metric he was doing fine in life, and could easily figure out a career in some white collar job that paid his bills well enough.
He just couldn’t shake a certain feeling of restlessness and dissatisfaction about the idea, and wound up making a habit of weekend demos and classes to see what else was out there in the world: one of which happened to be a sheep shearing weekend out at the Basso Homestead. On a whim, Barnes attended a demo headed by none other than Leonora while she was using a feisty ram (named Ramses) to walk visitors through the shearing process, Ramses was being fighty, Nell wasn’t around to help wrangle him, and Barnes, thinking he was capable, volunteered (despite Nora warning him repeatedly that rams were pretty feisty) to help hold him down.
… Needless to say he earned a spectacular nut shot via ram horns in the groin and wound up sitting out the rest of the day with an ice pack and a lot of sympathy, but it got him talking to Nora, and then Nell, and the three of them just gelled in a way that kept bringing them back together. He’s realized in hindsight that he’s much happier in the suburbs than the big city, and enjoys putting his schooling to use by handling the home taxes and business numbers.
(Fun fact: years later, when it Ramses got too big for his britches and was sent to the abattoir, they were given part of him by the Basso family and cooked a roast to celebrate the asshole sheep that brought them all together. Ramses was delicious.)
Barnes, incidentally, still has no idea just WHAT kind of shifter he actually is thanks to being a doorstep baby/anonymous adoption acquisition by the foster folks— aside from a giant 100+ pound country cat, that is. He’s observed that his shift is nearly as swift as Leonora’s, though there are queer persistences that he seems to have (pierced ears not healing instantly or trying to close after a change) that she lacks. Coupled with the fact that he seems to be a magnet for comically mundane/irritating paranormal activity, he’s put in his research (mostly as a boredom hobby, not a necessary pursuit) but keeps drawing blanks on potential labels for his identity. The TRUTH of the matter (which he’ll probably never know in canon) is that he’s actually a cait sith— born in the form of a cat, rather than a human, and bewitched by his mother to retain a human form as long as possible in the hopes that it would get him a better chance at finding loving parents. His shifting has a much heavier magical component to it than his SOs, though he has no real sense for it, and it’ll probably just be a mystery the rest of his life.
Wow, yeah, this got super long! I’ll make a separate post for the other losers I’ve made up lately, though these three are the most fleshed out so far.
I showed this to Wyrd over text messaging today BUT. Gonna show it here too because I am proud of my horrible, mangy son and his horrible hair.
As you may or may not have figured out by now, my entire aesthetic goal for poor Ick is to make him look as unfortunate as possible with his hybrid genetics. Apparently the forest species’s curly butt feather genes can have some very... interesting interaction with the rockstar hair of the mountain boys, producing an awful swath of forever-bedhead that no amount of feather oiling or brushes can tame. Forests must also have pretty deeply pigmented brownish face skin or something under the downy green, though normally you never see it exposed like this. His wings are also an interesting mix that seems to have partial expression of both type patterns, yet in a way no dragon girl on the planet will ever find remotely attractive.
Jude, at least, thinks he’s so ugly he’s almost cute again, but Jude is also his rider and therefore cripplingly biased after years of companionship and staring into that face for untold periods.
Aaand I finally managed to get the full chart done today: all three subspecies of Wyrd’s beautiful dragons, with typical male and female color phenotypes! Been plucking away at this off and on for a few days now-- getting the suggestion of iridescence across on those necks/wings/tails with each respective boy was quite a challenge with flat coloring! Super proud either way. Wyrd helped me finally blunder out a version of the mountain girls we were both happy with, too! I’ll leave it to her for any additional blurbage additions on the post. :)
(Also Wyrd is the best and dearest person ever pass it on)

I’m trying to actually put some activity into Tumblr now, no matter how slowly, so have a bit more noodling on the dragons Wyrd made up that she dragged me into because character creation is a hell we won’t let each other escape.
I’m slowly plucking away at what will be a phenotype color chart for males and females of all three subspecies currently existing! This was more or less traced off a teeny proportion noodle in the corner of one watercolor Wyrd posted a week or two back and just detailed/finessed out from there with her guidance.
Eventually we’ll have a nice fleshed out compilation if I can get my butt in gear!
I haven’t used this account for much in recent memory, but what better way to blow the dust off than with some good old OC rambling and stupid art?
So. As you may know, my dearest friend Wyrd has been concocting a fabulous new headword lately that involves dragons and dragon riding and I uh, may have been sucked into the whole character creation thing during our idea bashing because she is a TERRIBLE ENABLER OKAY. Like, the actual worst. UGH. But anyway!
Meet Incandescent, known more commonly by his nickname, Ick. Ick is a hybrid dragon, a cross between the mountain and forest subspecies, and was absolutely the unintended accident child of a “weyr” (Wyrd is still figuring out the jargon for dragon/rider liveries!) roughly ten years prior to canon despite everyone’s best efforts. Riders will actively discourage their dragons from breeding, as culture dictates all dragons MUST be caught and tamed from the wild, but sometimes, on rare occasions, Things still happen. Hybrid offspring are always naturally sterile and released back into the wilderness as soon as they’re old enough to fend for themselves, reverting back to a feral state with few issues. They are never kept in lieu of this, and no ushe has ever simply “inherited” their dragon from a nest born at the training facilities.
This does not, however, mean there are no hybrid riders at all.
Enter Jude: an equally competent and unlucky ushling who spent nearly five months straight of their wilderness survival/taming test without seeing a single dragon. They were mostly resigned to failing out of the program when, out of the blue, they heard a sound like someone with terrible laryngytis screaming bloody murder as they drowned in a pit of mayonnaise. One breezy, mile-long slog through dense forest later, they found the source of all the noise: a frantic, mud-caked dragon that had somehow managed to get itself impossibly stuck in mangrove, chest deep in bog slime.
The rescue effort took several hours of hacking roots, avoiding teeth, and questioning one’s life choices, but by nightfall Jude had more or less dragged the exhausted heap to the shore. Not about to look a gift horse in the mouth (no matter how terrible it smelled), Jude took full advantage of the situation and started shoving every spare scrap of food they had into the adolescent’s grasp so it would have reason to stick around, to Ick’s confusion and delight. The dramatic rescue made for one hell of a kick start in the taming experience, and it barely took a week for Jude to have the awful looking mess handleable. Needless to say there were a lot of raised eyebrows when the pair were returned to formal training, but wild caught was wild caught, and Jude had earned their place as a new ushe fair and square.
Adding to his uniquely terrible appearance (forest males have a fine coating of iridescent green down on their faces and vivid green neck plumage, while mountain males are bare faced, and the results of crossing turned out… well), Ick suffered some kind of terrible throat infection as a hatchling that left him with an unmistakable, wheezy, broken-bicycle-horn quality to all his vocalizations. He’s a cheerful, upbeat, excitable dragon who is also dumber than shit, and inherited the unrelenting urge to flirt with everything dragon shaped despite having no idea how to actually mate. He also seems to have no concept of self-preservation when it comes to other dragons rebuffing him, and honestly to this day no one is sure how he survived in the wild on his own for so long. He also loves to be filthy, and has a penchant for finding the stinkiest mud bogs in a fifty mile radius to throw himself in whenever Jude is wearing particularly fine riding clothes.
Jude has gotten so tired of answering all the obvious crowd questions about him that they carry around a fistful of business cards to pass out with such answers printed as:
Yes, he is healthy. He is a hybrid.
Yes, I DID catch him in the wild.
No, he does not have mange.
Yes, I know he’s courting the stuffed dragon dummy in the livery yard.
Yes, he is an idiot.
You’re welcome.
