Random worldbuilding concept: the popular idea of what happens after death is reincarnation, in the sense that one's soul moves on with the decay of their body, going on to inhabit the plants that are fertilized by it, the animals who eat those plants, the animals who eat those animals etc. If the body cannot be returned to the earth, the soul will remain trapped and stagnant. Because of this, the societies' most revered members are buried directly in the dirt, often without any sort of covering, so as to allow them to reincarnate as quickly as possible. Those who were hated in life, meanwhile, are buried in coffins in accordance with their sins. Lesser crimes will get you buried in a wooden box, where your soul will remain imprisoned until the box and your body decompose. Greater crimes may result in thicker coffin walls, and the most despised will be trapped in impenetrable crypts, doomed to never move on and rejoin the circle of life.

i think the figuring of fitz as both a dog and as a wolf is rly interesting. as a child he bonds exclusively to dogs. nosy + smithy are heavily associated with parental figures (burrich and patience respectively) and authority figures like galen. bc both dogs ultimately perish as a result of regal & galen's scheming, the dogs are forever left frozen in fitz's childhood as symbols of his youth . assassin's apprentice is a testament to a child's ability to adapt to their circumstances. his near-death experience at the end of assassins apprenticea is the final nail in the coffin with regards to his childhood innocence. this point of total metamorphosis, the end of his childhood is fittingly marked by nosy's death. the only other character in farseer trilogy so heavily associated w dogs is burrich, which reinforces the connection between dogs and childhood but also service—how fitz spent most of his childhood being made into a dog in service of the throne. in royal assassin, as fitz navigates the world as a young man as opposed to a boy, he is forced away from the stables and growing distant from burrich and his dogs and closer to nighteyes the wolf. when fitz frees nighteyes, he is also freeing himself, as he sees himself in the wolf. duke brawndy is not only described as "wolfish" but directly figures his revolutionary fighters as "wolves," suggesting that wolves represent as an alternate path to power and freedom that rejects his status as a tool for the farseers. dogs and wolves are thus continuously associated with fitz's struggle to navigate between boy vs man, subservience vs autonomy, subjucation vs freedom, conformity vs self acceptance, etc. when fitz escapes into nighteyes in the dungeon, it is a transcendance of the limitations imposed on him in service of the farseers. he denies regal the ability to kill him like a dog. a wolf cannot be caged like dog. a wolf has no kings
