Trams in Portugal have generally been traditional electric cars in large cities such as Lisbon, Porto and Sintra. Portuguese tram routes are typically, but not necessarily, tourist attractions.Tramways are usually embedded in the older parts of Portuguese cities. They are intended primarily for carrying passengers, and as a means of rapid transportation, since the trams usually have priority over the remaining traffic.

The Yellows of the Rails (amarelos da Carris) are a symbol of Lisbon, plying the narrow streets, steep and winding.

The Lisbon Metro (Metropolitano de Lisboa) is the metro (subway) system of Lisbon, Portugal. Construction began on August 7, 1955, and four years later, on December 29, 1959, the Lisbon Metro was inaugurated. It was the first subway system in Portugal.

The Restauradores square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, inaugurated in 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War, in 1640.

The rectangular square is surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings. The most remarkable are the Palácio Foz, a palace built between the 18th and 19th centuries and boasting magnificently decorated interiors, and the old Éden Cinema (now a hotel), with a beautiful Art Deco façade dating from the 1930s, a work by architect Cassiano Branco.

Situated near the Tagus river, the square was named Praça do Comércio, the Square of Commerce, to indicate its new function in the economy of Lisbon. The symmetrical buildings of the square were filled with government bureaus that regulated customs and port activities.

The main piece of the ensemble was the equestrian statue of King José I, inaugurated in 1775 in the centre of the square. This bronze statue, the first monumental statue dedicated to a King in Lisbon, was designed by Joaquim Machado de Castro, Portugal's foremost sculptor of the time.

The “Columns Wharf” was dismantled since 1997 and was put back again in 2008, giving back to the town an overwhelming sight over the amazing Tejo river, the typical “cacilheiros” boats and all the south river bank.

The Wharf was since the very beginning part of the Praça do Comércio’s project, when it was reconstructed after the big earthquake and tsunami of 1755, that destroyed great part of this Portuguese capital. Signed by the renowned Architect Eugénio dos Santos, it was concluded in the end of the 18th century. Its two columns, that give the name to the Wharf, embrace the stone stairway that meets the river.

The Pombaline Baixa is an elegant district, primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

It takes its name from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquess of Pombal, the Prime Minister to Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and key figure of the Enlightenment in Portugal, who took the lead in ordering the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on rebuilding the city, and the current grid pattern strongly differs from the organic streetplan that characterised the district before the Earthquake.
