Yves Olade, When Rome Falls
J. R. R. Tolkien, undisputedly a most fluent speaker of this language, was criticized in his day for indulging his juvenile whim of writing fantasy, which was then consideredāas it still is in many quartersā an inferior form of literature and disdained as mere āescapism.ā āOf course it is escapist,ā he cried. āThat is its glory! When a soldier is a prisoner of war it is his duty to escapeāand take as many with him as he can.ā He went on to explain, āThe moneylenders, the knownothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if weāre partisans of liberty, then itās our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as possible."
Stephen R. Lawhead
life is crying, reading books, drinking coffee, listening to like 2 songs, yearning, simping for the moon and then you die
I hate to talk about something so extremely severe but I just need to say it. I know the whole āwhy is nobody talking about thisā thing is annoying but I really am starting to feel like Iām going insane over the fact that Tennessee recently passed a law (PASSED IT, not suggested it, not considering it, itās FINALIZED) stating that businesses have to put up a WARNING SIGN if they are supportive of transgender people. A public warning sign stating that they allow trans people to use their facilities. And Iāve seen almost basically mainstream acknowledgment of it at all, anywhere. Just other trans people expressing their fear and anger. Can we maybe acknowledge that for like, how deeply horrifying that actually is.
For people looking for more information, the Tennessee legislature passed two bills: The first is like the OP said and requires businesses to put signs up if they allow trans people to use their restrooms.
But the second allows students and teachers to sue schools that let trans kids use the restroom.
it's so fucking terrible

If the moon smiled, she would resemble you. You leave the same impression Of something beautiful, but annihilating.

it's Ramadhan tomorrow!!!
Have a great one my fellow brother and sisters!
[ID: the bugs bunny āa very pleasant eveningā meme. the text has been edited to read, āi wish all Muslims who are fasting for Ramadhan a very great month of Ramadhanā. End ID]
love is buying someone a book and writing a note to them on the first page
the amount of people who reblogged this saying ādonāt write in books!!! grrr!!!! stupid person writing in books!!!ā you guys are truly something else š whereās that post thatās like i will eat every page after iāve read it..... cos i feel that every time i look in the notes .... please grow tf up
A dog eared book is a loved book and y'all can FIGHT ME
Shouldāve dumped my ex the minute I gave him a cheap paperback of theĀ Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam with a love note written in the front and his response to the gift was to say he hated it when people wrote in books; I couldāve saved myself one messy-ass divorce five years later.
Obviously donāt write in BORROWED books,Ā but come on. How cool is it to open a paperback from the used bookstore and find where someoneās marked up the words they cared about?
Marginalia
Sometimes the notes are ferocious, skirmishes against the author raging along the borders of every page in tiny black script. If I could just get my hands on you, Kierkegaard, or Conor Cruise OāBrien, they seem to say, I would bolt the door and beat some logic into your head.
Other comments are more offhand, dismissive ā āNonsense.ā āPlease!ā āHA!!ā ā that kind of thing. I remember once looking up from my reading, my thumb as a bookmark, trying to imagine what the person must look like who wrote āDonāt be a ninnyā alongside a paragraph in The Life of Emily Dickinson.
Students are more modest needing to leave only their splayed footprints along the shore of the page. One scrawls āMetaphorā next to a stanza of Eliotās. Another notes the presence of āIronyā fifty times outside the paragraphs of A Modest Proposal.
Or they are fans who cheer from the empty bleachers, hands cupped around their mouths. āAbsolutely,ā they shout to Duns Scotus and James Baldwin. āYes.ā āBullās-eye.ā āMy man!ā Check marks, asterisks, and exclamation points rain down along the sidelines.
And if you have managed to graduate from college without ever having written āMan vs. Natureā in a margin, perhaps now is the time to take one step forward.
We have all seized the white perimeter as our own and reached for a pen if only to show we did not just laze in an armchair turning pages; we pressed a thought into the wayside, planted an impression along the verge.
Even Irish monks in their cold scriptoria jotted along the borders of the Gospels brief asides about the pains of copying, a bird singing near their window, or the sunlight that illuminated their pageā anonymous men catching a ride into the future on a vessel more lasting than themselves.
And you have not read Joshua Reynolds, they say, until you have read him enwreathed with Blakeās furious scribbling.
Yet the one I think of most often, the one that dangles from me like a locket, was written in the copy of Catcher in the Rye I borrowed from the local library one slow, hot summer. I was just beginning high school then, reading books on a davenport in my parentsā living room, and I cannot tell you how vastly my loneliness was deepened, how poignant and amplified the world before me seemed, when I found on one page
a few greasy looking smears and next to them, written in soft pencilā by a beautiful girl, I could tell, whom I would never meetā āPardon the egg salad stains, but Iām in love.ā
- Billy Collins
iām 12 years old iām 64 iām over caffeinated im day drinking iām taking two ibuprofen iām on the brink of tears iām staring into space iām having a breakdown iām mentally ill im doing pretty well actually! iām the main character iām a vermeer painting iām a haunted doll
lonely girls my beloved. i see you staying in your room, i see you standing in grocery store aisles feeling the sudden wave of isolation wash over you. i understand how badly you want and how bad that makes you feel. i get it. we're not alone. but we are.

why donāt you go dip a hunk of bread into a bowl of hot homemade soup and maybe youāll calm down buddy
When Oscar Wilde said Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation, and Jorge Luis Borges said I am not sure that I exist, actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people that I have met, all the women that I have loved; all the cities I have visited.
