unpopular Star Wars opinions!
so I’m a prolific reader and have a large Star Wars book collection, and I decided to share my unpopular opinions on some books. Im going to rank them by my top five, with one being the worst.
for number five I am going to say light of the Jedi (high republic) this one isn’t so bad but it is a bit boring and hard to get into. I have read about 100 pages of it, quit, and read the first fifteen again.
Number four: ahsoka. Honestly I think this could have been edited a bit more as the writing felt a bit sloppy. I loved it the first time I read it, but the second time I found myself cringing a bit to much.
Number three: lost stars. The relationship felt very forced an the characters were slightly infuriating.
Number two: (this is technically a trilogy but whatever) the bounty hunter wars (by chuck wending). The characters were annoying and this book feels the need to repeat itself. Honestly I was bored to tears with how many times it was repeated. Finished the first book, but I have picked up the second on and off to no avail.
Last but very much least: rise of the red blade: inquisitor. The Author seems thinks that we are incompetent children who cannot understand what she says the first time she says it. She constantly repeats the fact that iskat had an incident involving a column when she was younger, or repeats the fact that iskat has two hearts. Like we got it the first 10 times stfu. And iskat’s motivation for joining the dark side seems very forced. And I don’t think palpatine would have given enough of a shit about her to not kill her during order 66. Iskat is also very unlikable, which I think defeats the purpose of the book. I hated this book so much, that I actually wrote 17+ pages about how much i despise it. :D
I agree with most of your points. I remember finishing LoTJ and thinking that it’s a glorified advertisement for the other high republic books.
I’m also afraid to reread Lost Stars as I remember loving it when I read it the first time.

I maintain that if Thrawn ever met back up with his sister during his ascendancy days, he would not have joined the empire and became evil.

I genuinely didn’t get all the Qui-Gon hype until I read Master & Apprentice and since then he’s shot up to my #3 favorite character
Ok but Rael Aveross is up there too right? He instantly became one of my favorite book exclusive characters at the very least.
I love Rael so so so much. I anticipate that I’ll like him even more once I finish Dooku: Jedi Lost. Like, he really is trying his best and failing but at the same time Dooku really encouraged bad habits 😭 but he tries so hard it’s heartbreaking. The way he enters the story through Qui-Gon’s eyes as this super cool powerful awesome Jedi Knight (the flashback scene) and then we slowly learn his flaws as a person and he really comes to life 😭
My favorite thing about Rael is that he’s /really/ not a one-dimensional character. He has some real layers to him. He feels crazy amounts of guilt and tries so so hard to make up for things that he messes up new situations. He’s such a mess. I love him.
That said, I have no idea what Dooku was teaching him about the Jedi because some of the things he was saying were a bit wild. But that might just be an author thing because Pax and even Qui-Gon had their… interesting moments in that regard.
In all, Rael did immediately shoot up in my favorite characters list. His open ending (in this novel at least) is very well done and his final scene with Dooku? Chef’s kiss. GORGEOUS.
Rael helping Qui-Gon (teaching him how to connect with Dooku) at the beginning and Qui-Gon helping Rael (restoring his faith in the light) at the end?? They’re brothers your honor😭😭
Literally couldn’t agree more. I personally really appreciate how Rael and Qui-Gon are equal and opposites in certain ways. Like they are very much both unconventional and rebellious when it comes to defying the jedi order. But the thing is that Rael’s relationship with Dooku is so much different on how it shaped him as a Jedi than Qui-Gon.
Like I love how Qui-Gon’s stoicism in TPM is directly influenced by Dooku’s coolheaded-ness while being a mentor. Meanwhile Rael is… not that. Like at all. Even without with his trauma, Rael would still indulge in his drinking and sex life. And with it, it’s just turned up to 11. Not to say that Qui-Gon isn’t a freak in his own respect, I would just say he hides it better moment to moment and really is Dooku’s spitting image, but better.
Don’t get your hopes up for Dooku: Jedi Lost in terms of Rael content. He’s there for sure, but so briefly.
I also liked the “cooler older brother” thing that Rael had going for him. It’s hard for me to articulate exactly but the way that he was a positive on Qui-Gon from such an early age to Qui-Gon being the one to bring him back to the light is so meaningful.
Anyways we need more of him. Claudia Gray please. Rael Aveross trilogy when??!

Hey, you want to hear something funny? The 10 year old who saw "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" when it came out is now 20.
hey can you settle a debate for me between me and my partner please? Between Vi and Cait, who is oil and who is water?
Vi is oil and Caitlyn is water. Vi has her "oil slick" phase, Caitlyn in s1 was heavily associated with rain (between her scene with the umbrella to the oil and water fight and the shower scene).
One of my favorite SW glup shittos is Rael Averross from that Master and Apprentice book that released a few years back.
To me he fulfills the role of a side content character perfectly. Nothing he does becomes essential to the source material, so it's not imperative to know of their existence to properly engage with the story at large; yet he simultaneously re-contextualizes specific situations in ways that enhance the experience.
Rael is five years old when he's brought to the temple. At the time, he was the oldest kid ever allowed in the Jedi order. He willfully refused to ever let go of the culture where he came from, his accent, his ideas. It's not like the Jedi prohibited him from such, but it's pointed out by the book himself that a large part of this was done in defiance. He liked pushing the Jedi and their patience to their limits, it's why Dooku chose him as a Padawan.
Instead of teaching him healthy ways to engage with his culture, or assure him he could return if he so desired, he simply insisted on making him even more stubborn. He didn't respect anything about the Jedi, down to their clothing.
And man, he was a disaster. Got his first Padawan killed. Was utterly blinded for his love for who was basically a foster daughter. The Jedi never knew how to reach him best. This ends up nearly causing war in a planet that was relying on his protection and guidance.
So, when a nine year old shows up years later at the temple, brought by none other than Dooku's second Padawan... Of course they were afraid of taking Anakin in. Of course they were insistent on him letting go of his mother. They felt that they had failed Rael by letting him off the hook so many times, so they overcorrected regarding their vigilance on Anakin.

The problem with being a Star Wars fan who actually reads the books is not every Star Wars book is good. Like some of them are really great but some of them are really boring and a chore to get through. Like normally if you're not into a book you can just not finish it but if it's a Star Wars book you feel obligated to finish it if for no other reason than to build your nerd cred. Like fandom homework.
Rewatched Batman and Robin the other day and I found it’s incredibly reasonable to headcanon Batman as gay. Not in like a “haha batnipples” but like actually. The first thing we see with Bruce Wayne as a public figure is with his fake girlfriend who he seemingly no attraction to and is baffled by the question of marriage. AND THEN when they have a private dinner he shows her zero affection and the same unwillingness to ever get married. Also you may say “what about poison ivy? He was clearly attracted to her!” And to that I’ll say it was 110% the pheromones and nothing to do with his non pheromone induced sexuality. Like he continuously finds it strange whenever he comes in contact with the pheromones after the initial experience like he’s feeling something that isn’t natural. In fact, when he was at Freeze’s lair when he smelled the pheromones his initial thought was “ivy must be nearby.” And not “god I need her.” Also he said to Robin along the lines of how his attraction to her ended just as suddenly as it started. SO my idea is that Ivy’s pheromones have a greater effect on Robin not because he’s younger but because he’s already attracted to women while the reason Batman is more resistant is because he’s in the closet.
I predict that in 5 years time people on this website will discover The Sun Also Rises and become obsessed with Robert Cohn.
