“Better to love and lose,” you hear, As if they somehow know That the rapture of love would be nothing Without a complementing low. But meaning lies in circumstance -  You shouldn’t judge from an extreme, Whether from clouds on high or dirt below, The truth won’t be as it seems. Or perhaps they both are equally fine And the worst lies in between: Where, with detachment, one can look To recall what they have seen; For fate is fettered to the hand Where love still grows within; And how could you ever let go of it When you don’t yet want it to end? This all to say: don’t break your rules, Or they’ll unravel like beads on a string. And you’ll know when grasping for broken pearls That you let yourself lose everything.
