I have fully studied and done a lot of calculus 1 2 and 3,
Yet i still am shit at integration.
Have you ever felt the need to read a research paper on an area that youll probably never study nor intend in doing so?
i honestly dont know what to post on tumblr so i’ll just say random stuff about maths i guess
tfw the textbook explanation is so bad wikipedia’s is better

i love how the fact that im interested in maths can be traced back to when i read homestuck when i was 7, what the fuck
Don’t know what to choose for my PhD, Mathematical Physics or Geometry?
Do you mean like algebraic geometry or actual geometry?
I mean actual Geometry, just for context in my uni the list for the PhD specializations is:
-Algebra, Logic and Foundations
-Mathematical Analysis
-Numerical Analysis and Computational Maths
-Geometry and Topology
-Mathematical Physics
I can’t decide between the last two
Going with geometry and topology. All that Hilbert space stuff seems neat, but it seems unlikely that you get through mathematical physics without doing a fair number of integrals. Also I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Yeah sure i think i should go with geometry too, i don’t like staring at integrals for too long, especially triple ones

Thinking of that time i absolutely neglected doing the exercises in Spivak’s textbook when i was young and learning calculus, because of this it now takes me 30 minutes to integrate a complicated function.
I wish i could give young me a slap.

I believe the worst feeling while reading a textbook is not being able to follow the author’s train of thoughts.
Graph theory is interesting, wish i had more time to read on it.
I’m more and more going the abstract path of mathematics (to the point where i considered reading Russel’s Principia), although i’d also like to study such things as dynamical systems and other “concrete” (non-discrete) subjects.
Don’t get me wrong though, the foundations of maths and logic are interesting in their own right, but more applicable areas still are fun when studied for their own sake.
I think the most unhealthy thing i do is only read when it’s late at night, i often spend the whole day procrastinating and then end up reading from midnight to 3 am, Anyone else?
Currently going through Serge Lang’s Calc 3 book, i don’t like his treatment of the subject that much, but it’s too late to change books, planning on taking abstract algebra and then differential geometry.
if you’re looking for recommendations then i suggest reading Hubbard’s Vector Calculus; Remember that doing the exercises is crucial though.

i still have no idea how tumblr works....
I think I chose to be a math major cause I’m a masochist. There’s no other explanation.
