I’m going to indulge my delulu and put together a list of reasons why I think Clive and Jason could work well together. I’ll add more later, feel free to add your own reasons:
1. Jason gets Clive to step out of his comfort zone. Without someone to encourage him to go out, he absolutely will sit in an office and research all day (see: when Jason first arrived, when Jason died, when Jason left… again). But he does enjoy adventuring, just needs someone to drag him out and enjoy it with.
2. Clive can ground Jason. All his friends can, tbh, but we see this directly when Jason is killing that messenger. Clive manages to get him to stop torturing her and just put an end to it when even Shade struggled.
3. They’re both insane, but in complementary ways. Jason = arrogant maniac. Clive = mad scientist. Jason needs a mad scientist to keep his crazy adventures functional and feasible and Clive needs someone to help enable his bad behaviors (I 100% believe that if they were left alone, Jason would help Clive break into the magic society)
4. Jason will absolutely demand attention. When thinking of Clive in a relationship, one of the biggest issues I see is that he would have a tendency to ignore his spouse for his research. Jason simply would not let him. He demands attention too much.
5. They’re both astral magic specialists. Clive wants someone to talk about his research with in bed before going to sleep. Jason can. Will Jason? Probably, if you get him going. He enjoys learning about astral magic. He won’t allow it all the time but a bit of moderation is good for Clive as well.
6. Jason will force Clive to take a break. See 1. Clive will research all day every day. Whether it’s to adventure or just to eat some food, he needs a break. Even if it’s just a cup of tea on the roof of the cloud house.
7. Jason is astral magic. Clive might have a tendency to use Jason as an experiment BUT he cares enough about Jason to be careful not to go too far and Jason is assertive enough to tell him his boundaries. Plus, Jason is motivated and smart enough to help him with his research (his instinctual insights help too).
8. Jason is less reckless than he used to be and is willing to defer to Clive’s rules on astral magic and research (and experimentation). This is essentially just referencing Clive saying what he wants in Book 11. Jason might think it exciting to blow up trams, but he’s more than willing to do things Clive’s way.
9. They can stand each other for long periods of time. Look. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it is. Jason and Clive spend HOW much time together researching astral magic? Probably mostly alone. And I imagine they’re productive.
10. Jason likes to show off. And Clive would absolutely let him. Jason is astral magic after all, he can show off to his spouse all the time and I believe Clive would enjoy it.
11. Jason respects Clive’s background and family. Probably gets along GREAT with them as well. Them returning to Greenstone basically for Neil and Clive’s families? Amazing. Also Jason takes the time to learn about eel cooking from Clive.
