Statistically, both One Piece and Naruto cannot be the greatest anime oat
Idk nothing bout bleach so im not gonna mention it but im just gonna reference the big three cos i imagine its similar but im not sure. Anyways, the big three can never fully deserve the title of the greatest anime of all time. And the reason for this is genuinely mathematical. Iâm gonna use Naruto as my example because itâs the one ive watched the most of. So, as we all know, Naruto is full of filler episodes. Nothing wrong with a filler episode, it just isnât really relevant to the plot and can be pretty boring. So if we rate the filler episodes of Naruto, theyâre probably like a 4-6/10. Now we can all agree that Naruto has some 10/10 episodes for sure. Probably some of the greatest episodes of all time. BUT the issue is, the sheer amount of filler offsets the overall greatness of the anime. If we were to give every single Naruto episode a rating from 1-10/ 10 and then found the average by adding up to get a total and dividing it by the total number of episodes, it would probably get like a 7.5/10, which is very strong, considering its 700 episodes long. But there are many shows, for example, hunterxhunter, whose episodes are consistently above 7/10, meaning if u calculate the avg, itâs coming up to a solid, idk, 9.1/10, which clears 7.5 obv. So, statistically, hunterxhunter is better than Naruto.
Another example would be One Piece. Arguably has the best plot of all time BUT⌠its pacing means that lots of episodes can drop from a solid 7 to like a 4. And the filler episodes are probably like a 5 out of 10. Again, lots of the episodes are 10 out of 10, but if we calculate the avg, its probably like a 7/10, less then naruto, beacuse of how much the pacing and filler offsets its greatness. Because both naruto and one piece have so many episodes, they actually cap themselves, because with 1000 or 700 episodes, thereâs no way the quality of each episode can be consistent, no matter how good the plot, animation or characters are. Itâs simply not possible.
Another reason why the big three canât be called the greatest of all time is because they arenât accessible. In general, would u rather read an a thousand page book, where the plot is immaculate but some parts are boring and ran and it takes ages to get to the good part. Or would u rather read a book thatâs 200 pages long, the plot is consistently maintained and good, and the book remains interesting from start to finish. Any sane person would say that the second option is likely better because im more likely to actually pick it up and read. If no one wants to actually read u because u take ages to get to the point, how can u be the greatest of all time?
Shorter, more consistent anime maintain higher average ratings, making them statistically better than the big three. If we viewed the scores out of ten for one pice and compared it to black clover on box plots, one piece would have a significantly wider interquartile range, symbolising lack of consiteny, and a lower median, meaning an overall lower avg rating. In comparison, black clover, attack on titan and hunterxhunter would have a small interquartile range and high median meaning a consistently better anime. (if u dont know what a box plot is google it, its pretty easy to grasp once u see it)
Now what i will say is that the claim u can make is that on the whole, the big three contain some of the greatest EPISODES of all time, or even the greatest plot lines. Those a viable points. But to call them the greatest animeâs oat is mathematically and statistically incorrect, if we view qualitative data as quantifiable values.
