I'm obsessed
What can I say? I loved this design of Hiro And I needed to draw it. (I'm a little shy about tagging the artist, sorry)
This design of Hiro comes from the artist Jaxinkh, hehe I love the comic TT
Yo @jaxinkh that's your baby here
"I am Youssef, an 18-year-old young man, and my dreams and hopes vanished in an instant. My family’s house in Khan Yunis was destroyed, and I found myself and my family living in a displacement camp in Deir al-Balah, under the scorching sun, inside a tent swaying in the wind. I wake up every morning to the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, but they no longer mean anything to me—they only remind me of the freedom we lost and the life we once had..."
Hello everyone! As of writing this, Youssef is at $3,877 out of his EXTREMELY ACHIEVABLE $15,000 goal. He has only gotten eight don@tions in the past day. Youssef is asking for $15,000 to support himself and his family, mainly for medicine, shelter, and food, which are hellishly scarce as a manifestation of Israel's genocide. He is only 18 and he is responsible for his family's SURVIVAL. Please take the time to read Youssef's own words on his GFM page, as well as on his tumblr account, @yousefjehad3 . Read them, stare at them, process them. Let them truly sink in. Then, go to his fundr@iser and DON@TE. Every single coin you can spare counts, because everyone's small contributions will snowball into a massive one. None of these fundr@isers reached their goal because of one loaded don0r. It was always a group effort.
And, whether or not you're able to d0nate - SHARE, with your family, your friends, your groupchats, your tumblr followers, so that someone who can will have the chance to see it! If you are on Tumblr, you are able to reblog.
Don't ever think your contributions are useless. They provide material help and are expressions of care during impossibly dire times. Palestinians quantifiably cannot afford your apathy.
Youssef's GFM is vetted. He is shown on line 255 on the Vetted Gaza Evacuation Fundr@iser List by @/el-shab-hussein and @/nabulsi.

(btw, I've heard that it's not a good idea to tag posts like this with terms such as correctly-spelled 'don@tions,' which is why I'm spelling things as such. I encourage you to refrain from tagging your reblogs with these terms just in case..)
A reminder of a simple dnati@n that saves an entire family🇵🇸🍉

Sometimes I can still hear their voice
Breaking: TikTok is better bc it’s more hostile towards humanity
The lack of video content is what kept us here... I thought we all agree that the best feature of this hellhole was and always will be anonymity.
Tumblr's not asking for my phone number. It's not going through my contacts to try and connect me with my fucking colleagues. I can come here and talk about whatever I want without anyone ever seeing my face or hearing my voice. I don't have to censor myself and hide my interests or enthusiasm out of fear of consequences it might have in my real life.
I think the biggest misunderstanding they have of Tumblr is that they think of it as a social media platform when in actuality it's a blogging platform with social features.
I like the use of Metroman here because if there's one thing Tumblr users collectively agree on it's that we want everyone to think we're dead
Controversial take but
I think we should, at the very least, rethink the whole "every avatar created problems for their successor/their mistakes affect their successor" as a thematic analysis.
I get why it's used but the examples within usually tend to be reductive of the issue (Yangchen&Kuruk), presumptuous with little evidence (Szeto), or relying on ignoring larger problems (Kyoshi and the Dai Li).
Like I get the whole blaming Roku for not killing Sozin, but I feel like it all connects to a larger issue of ignoring the fact that many of these issues are less about the Avatar and more just human conflict/flaw.
The Avatar isn't an "organic" existence, as in, the avatar didn't "naturally evolve" into that position. It was an error Wan made and tried to rectify, then took on as a duty, reincarnating as said duty. The Avatar is not an inherent social leader for humans, they're just culturally constructed that way by their means of power. In the most reductive sense, they're a human merged with a powerful spirit.
Of the Avatars we have met, we know they're expected to handle human and spirit matters, and the world operates with this in mind. It means criminals (on all scales) operate with the Avatar as a known variable. Crime goes up during the first 16 years of an Avatar's life. We saw this with the Earth King who committed a Sage massacre when Roku was a child, the White Lotus facilitating the 'Platinum Affair' when Yangchen was 8, and the literal hell that broke loose when Kuruk died.
These are world leaders, the white lotus, etc up to absolute shenanigans or ignoring bubbling issues in their own nations, they too have a responsibility in managing this. Often, they made things worse lmao. It's the natural tide of life, Avatars aren't omnipotent nor omniscient.
We have no actual proof that the 3 nations suffered during Szeto's era. He was a highly revered Avatar until Kyoshi's era by the 4 nations. What we do know is that the Fire Nation was an absolute disaster and that Szeto spent much of his time there, enough that other nations can comment on it, but unless it's mentioned in the TTRPGs, we don't have any proof that the 3 other nations suffered in his era. The conflict Yangchen faces at 17 is a system that was created after Szeto died, not one born of desperation on the other nations' ends, but opportunity.
Yangchen's deal with the spirits is much of a human problem than it was her own neglect. The problem (as far as we have seen) was that humans ignored the boundaries set by Spirits, were attacked, called Yangchen, then disregarded the boundaries she put in place as a response. She created sacred spaces for air nomads to maintain to keep spirits content, which created difficulties for the human refugees who had to vacate those spaces. So many disregarded the boundary. Or the case of the Saowon clan, who just ignored her. Yes, Yangchen blames herself, but the responsibility can't lie solely on her feet, she can't dictate and control people, she can't erase and create new borders, or force people into other countries. When she sets a boundary, it's also humanity's responsibility to listen. And they consistently did not.
It's honestly weird to see Kuruk used as an example when textually, we're told that his companions did actually handle conflicts just fine when he was alive. The issue was that people used the fact that he was dead to go on their little murder sprees and raids. His companions tried, but Kuruk dying early didn't cause this, this would've happened either way. The structure of the 4 nations made this possible. Nobody was interested in aiding the Southern Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom.....moving on. Corruption is what caused that, mass poverty is what caused that. The 4 nations did have the means to handle this, very often it was just financially beneficial to not.
I mean, 🤧 in all seriousness, no, Kyoshi, the third-party militaristic force was not a good idea in any capacity. Keeping things as Watsonian as possible, in my babygirl's defense, I don't think she was anticipating anyone slaughtering all the Sages she put in place, that could've been a counter-measure against the Dai Li.
In general, I think the framing of the lens doesn't really allow for the exploration of anything, especially not the avatar as a socio-political construct. It's, in essence, a normal person burdened with immense power and responsibility, expected to wield knowledge and strength against world problems. But what happens when world leaders are the problems? Nobles? The fuckass white lotus? We've seen on several occasions the way the Avatar can be/is used as a political tool, how easily they can be groomed and manipulated, they're still human, at the end of the day. We can interpret Kyoshi in her later life as becoming "more spirit-like", until we get more concrete evidence of what her perspective was during those years. Aang and Yangchen show us how culture impacts their decision making and philosophy.
I get the thematic analysis, and I get the intent, but when you have to twist events to make it fit, I feel like the analytical lens just doesn't work. It's grimey to me, to disregard the fact of humanity's hand in this. They're not mindless and they sure as hell weren't powerless, a lot of them were just dicks that made things harder for everyone. And like, the Avatar as a concept in-universe is a step away from torture lmao. It's not to say they weren't flawed, ofc they were. They made plenty of mistakes, but I keep seeing that sentiment and those specific examples and I feel like it does a poor job of actually engaging with what made certain eras the way they were. It's a myriad of shit. I don't think Kyoshi would've made the Dai Li if she knew the earth kingdom had mind control technology 😔 I'm sure she was too busy trying to figure out how to get them to break down those walls in Ba Sing Se without getting "authoritarian" allegations thrown at her.
Anyway, I wrote all of this to say please stop saying Szeto let the other 3 nations just burn to the ground. At least until some new media says he did, it seems generally unlikely given that he's still highly respected outside of the Fire Nation, and the Fire Nation and Water Tribes were still doing well enough to start funding coups.
ao3 turns 16 today.

“Came out of nowhere.”
Yeah, I’ve got your “came out of nowhere” right here.
Yeah, really….but you know how it is these days…apparently subtle = came out of nowhere…
You know when they say “came out of nowhere”, what they mean to say is:
[This is not my ship so I’m going to purposely ignore and downplay every single hint or buildup and pass it off as delusional people grasping at straws, so yeah I’m surprised because to me it] came out of nowhere.

I love that zero relationships are made stronger through conflict in avatar the last airbender. War and oppression only serve to tear relationships apart in the show. I’ve already read some great pieces on the show’s depiction of colonial family dynamics. But the friendships and romances reflect it, too. There are no brothers in arms, no romances ignited because someone is leaving tomorrow for the battlefront.
As far as romantic relationships: Sokka loses Yue and twice has to leave Suki for their duty to the greater good. Katara is too overwhelmed with the conflict to invest in a relationship with Aang, and her first romantic feelings towards a boy are transformed into betrayal when Jet lies to her in his pursuit of justice. And even Zuko twice leaves Mai to pursue his “destiny.” And that’s just the kids. The adults are similarly submerged in devastated romance. We see so many single parents throughout the series. Many have lost their partner to the fire nation army. Some have incarcerated partners like Haru’s mother. Enlistment separates partners, too. And even the most dominating force in the world, Firelord Ozai, loses his partner in his desire for power.
Friendships are similarly prevented from blossoming within a culture of domination. Azula is the most evident example, with her friendships founded on obedience rather than mutual affection blowing up in her face. Zuko, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any friends. Those oppressed by the fire nation establish their friendships in moments of safety, when the threat of violence is temporarily absent. “Do you want to go penguin sledding with me?” That’s the beginning of a friendship. They do not become friends fighting together. That is allyship. Look at The Blue Spirit. Zuko and Aang can fight together for a common cause, but this is not the shape of friendship. Even relationships between different marginalized groups are fraught with tensions founded in the imperial violence they’ve confronted. When Aang visits the Northern Air Temple, he is distraught over the desecration of the temple by the earth kingdom refugees. The violence they’ve each faced puts them in conflict with one another rather than providing a possible sense of kinship. It’s even more complicated when it comes to befriending across the lines of the oppressor and oppressed. Despite their affinity for one another and aligned goals, Zuko and Aang cannot truly establish their friendship until the system of domination is eliminated. Friendship is a dynamic between equals, and ATLA asks whether you can actually be friends across these lines if society refuses to be equitable. Friendships and romance depend not on conflict to deepen them but an active peacefulness.
When people talk about Avatar writing relationships poorly, I think maybe consider that the relationships weren’t actually supposed to be building up in any kind of traditional way in the show. I think ATLA was precisely focused on relationships being broken and sometimes even empty because of conflict. It’s only the last episode that’s meant to show the beginnings of things, the consummation of hope. For the first time there’s the possibility for these relationships to mean something rather than almost inevitably ending in tragedy.
“Let no one mistake us for the fruit of violence—but that violence, having passed through us, failed to spoil us.” —Ocean Vuong, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous
