the five trauma reactions: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and mating
id like if we could keep the alliteration going but i dont know if anyone has made an f word for mating
They haven't sorry
thats fucked up
happy 20 year anniversary of Neil banging out the tunes!
though every rat is special, it's a wonderful and unusual thing for their accomplishments to be remembered and cherished by so many people so many years later. we're all so fortunate to know about the rat who banged out the tunes!
thank you to all the people who sent me reference photos of their beloved rats for this piece!!! credits under the cut!
I love how Leverage went
Here's the cat burglar. She wears comfy clothes and has zero social skills. She has sex appeal but only if you're into a very specific type of woman, and crucially she has zero idea she has it. She probably doesn't know what an innuendo is.
Here's the hacker. He's a Black nerd, and also the most moral character of the bunch. He's a nerd but also not socially awkward; in fact, he's the second best at grifting, right after the person who's been doing it for decades.
Here's the muscle. In his heart of hearts, he is a chef. He is tough and manly but he uses that to look out for the working class and children and everyone else the system leaves behind. He's feared by politicians and he reminds his friend to tip the delivery person.
Here's the femme fatale. She's over forty years old, and she's the one seducing the mark. She's the heart of the team. Her calling is to be a director. She loves attending her own funeral.
Here's the mastermind. He's the only one who doesn't start out as a career criminal. He manipulates his own crew, kills two people after promising them he won't, and takes deals behind their back. He was in seminary school.
Also, here's their nemesis. He's Mark Sheppard.
Then comes Leverage Redemption.
Here's the new guy. No, he's not the new Mastermind, he's a fixer. He's a former lawyer, but the unslimiest you've ever met. He knows he's fucked up and is atoning for it. He loves his daughter. He might be queer and is just discovering that at the same time he's become a jaunty cat burglar. He's played by middle-aged Noah Wyle getting to show off his comedic chops.
Here's the other new person, another hacker. She's also a Black nerd, but a woman this time, and the younger (foster) sister of the original hacker. She gets treated as a valuable part of the team with her own specialities and weaknesses, not just a copy of her brother. She's ace representation in a media landscape that erases ace people and hypersexualizes Black women.
She's also not just ace, but an ace lesbian, which I think is the first (and maybe only) ace lesbian character I've seen in anything to date. And these two facets of her identity are never really raised as a thing, let alone any kind of contradiction, which makes it all the more beautiful.
They added in these two new characters, and not only do they not feel awkward or forced, but they're just as multi-dimensional and lovable as the original crew, and they each bring out beautiful new aspects of each of the crew, as well.
("Noah Wyle getting to show off his comedic chops" also sounds potentially like someone who's unfamiliar with the Librarian(s) franchise, in which case I highly recommend checking it out!)
under socialism we will make it illegal to name illnesses after countries
Okay genuinely the damage that naming the Ebolavirus has done to tourism in the DRC, an already impoverished country, is devastating. No one wants to visit the Ebola River. Coronavirus is named after a shape. There are so many ways to name a pathogen or disease without harming the people of the region where it was discovered.
it also discourages even informing people of the pathogen, scientists and doctors who are the first to inform people for their safety have to go in knowing the racism and racial namings that will happen just because they tried to protect and inform people. even when the naming isn't a race or place people get racist to the discovery place as it happened with covid, therefore even more so when it's named after places

community notes are so brutal. tumblr needs to add that feature to escalate our pvp capabilities
No the person who tweeted this made me laugh so hard the other day bc people were trying to correct them and they edited their shadow on picsart to keep the bit going

For reasons I can only guess at, DC's recolored edition of the first 1995ā1996 Birds of Prey story from BLACK CANARY/ORACLE: BIRDS OF PREY #1 has undergone some kind of awful, probably completely automated recoloring job that has left all the colors off-register and made the line art look blurry. Here's a scan that gives a better idea of how this panel originally looked:
(The color values of her skin tone still don't look right in this scan ā it looks like the color balance has shifted too much into the red ā but at least the registration is crisp, which shouldn't be too much to ask.)
The rest of the first BOP trade paperback doesn't have this problem, but I guess they either no longer had the original digital assets for Matt Hollingsworth's color separations for this story or else something bad happened to them. This is a frequent problem with DC's recent reprints, and they really need to do something about it, because this looks awful ā asking people to pay good money for such sloppy reproduction sits ill, and original colorist Sherilyn Van Valkenburgh has every right to be offended.
The Dick-Talia beef from Tomasi is top 10 of possibly anything ever. I have never encountered such shit-eating-ness in any other collection of interactions ever.
The smile at Talia getting held up in the lobby.
Her offense and the patronizing ass clap.
THE FEATHER. TALIA BEING LIKE āWHY THE FUCK A FEATHERā.
THE BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE PHOTOS OF HOSTAGES.
OH THEYāRE SO CATTY. SO WONDERFULLY CATTY. PETTY THY NAME IS DICK GRAYSON. SCHEMING THY NAME IS TALIA AL GHUL.
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT.
rewatching the maltese falcon job and i love how sometimes nateās solution to a problem is very clever and complex and thought-out and well-planned, and sometimes his solution is just being irritating as hell. like oh, sterling needs to be stalled getting up to the mayorās hotel room?? no problemo. lemme just run up every flight of stairs and stop at every floor to hit the elevator call button. easy peasy. heās like a cat in the sense that sometimes causing a distraction means slinking around and making your perfect move at the very last second after youāve executed your flawess plan, and sometimes itās just knocking a fucking glass off the table so it makes a huge mess
underrated funny part of system collapse is murderbot repeatedly being like 'no one knows wtf three wants to do ever because three doesn't know how to want things yet' but most of three's narration in network effect was 'i want to rescue murderbot. i want to do a good job rescuing murderbot. i hope i get a good grade in rescuing murderbot. i want to rescue murderbot so bad that im going to attempt to talk a terrifying murderous spaceship out of its plan for a planetary bombardment' mb just consistently says the most blatantly wrong shit about everyone it's ever met lmao
#i don't think murderbot has considered what an immense leg up three has in terms of learning to individuate and execute its own desires #and the leg up is: IT KNOWS IT IS POSSIBLE #murderbot babe you were building a car by inventing the wheel #three has already seen a wheel #you are the wheel #it's a huge advantage to have met someone further down your own recovery process #because it's concrete proof that you can get there #and a great way to get some coping mechanisms without having to invent them from scratch
#also the presaux team was a little nice to murderbot one time and it shot itself in the chest to protect them #so yeah it makes sense to me that three met the original copy of the person who liberated it from a hellish existence and went #'yeah fuck it i'll get in an argument with an all powerful homicidal ai and then risk my life let's ball'

I think those fancomics where Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes is transgender are cute and fun but I also think it's a deep misunderstanding of Calvin's character to think he would transition into a heterosexual normie who goes to her high school reunion. That girl would have neopronouns and fang implants
Adult Calvin is a tattoo artist named Panthera who is the bassist in a terrible metal band called Captain Napalm and Hobbes helps do faer E injections
I know it's like 2 weeks too late to change it but I'm so mad I didn't realize that the band would obviously be called "Get Rid Of Slimy GirlS". I walk the road of shame
More from that one post
no one asked but itās driving me crazy so my thoughts on the word bitch are as follows:
by definition, it can be categorized as a slur
i donāt think it should be treated the same way as other slurs (insert john mulaney quote āif weāre comparing the badness of two words but not even saying one of the words, thatās the worse oneā) and to imply that bitch has the same power as racial slurs is blatantly wrong
bitch as a word generally has been used for so long that it feels ridiculous to say no one should be allowed to use it
people, especially men, should be aware of the way they use bitch as an insult because of the inherent misogyny of the word since it Does often get used as a āslurā
ābut men get called a bitch tooā isnāt a good argument because 90% of the time a man gets called a bitch, itās to imply heās acting like a woman
i Personally donāt think men should be regularly using it as an insult and i side eye men who do
just because i donāt think men should use it doesnāt mean any man who uses it should be automatically assumed to be a misogynist
i do however think that men who use it havenāt examined their own biases and how misogyny affects their actions in a patriarchal society since we do not exist in a vacuum
people who argue that thereās no problem with the word bitch think of misogyny as a ālesserā form of discrimination and donāt consider it a serious issue
even if you disagree with me i still donāt understand why anyone would bother arguing in favor of men using bitch as an insult because why would are you joining the war on misogyny on the side of misogyny
all of this goes double for the word cunt. yes even if youāre australian

They should add "On Horseback" option to Google Maps. For writers.
"Hevoslinja" (Trans-Horse) is a European art project started in 2014 by Finnish artist Eero Yli-Vakkuri - according to his own words 'skilless in riding and afraid of animals' at the start.
The aim of the project was to travel 270 km / 168 miles between Helsinki and Turku in Finland, and to highlight the possibility of horse travel in modern society. Since then they've took to promoting horseback efforts in urban landscapes with several European collaborators and artists.
Yli-Vakkuri and collaborators first spent eight months practicing riding to become safely self-sufficient in saddle, and bought a Finnhorse gelding Toivottu Poika ('Awaited Son'). The route followed, as closely as possible, the old coastal royal country road of the premodern era, Kuninkaantie/Suuri Rantatie, and took 9 days.
Toivottu Poika is a very average example of his breed, standing at some 155 cm / 15.1 hh tall. The Finnhorse is a relative of for example the North-Norwegian Lyngshest breed, the Icelandic horse, the Swedish Gotlandsruss pony and the Estonian landrace horse and Tori horse breed. It is a mid-sized light draught and trotter, a sensibly realistic mediaeval country travel horse equivalent.
For more hardcore short-term treks, looking into competitive endurance riding can be helpful. Mongol Derby might be one of the most intense races, as it recreates the Chinggis Khan era postal system of swapping horses continuously over a 1000 km / 620 mile route.
By only including skilled endurance riders, keeping up a constant fast speed and swapping horses every 40 km / 25 mil, the Mongol Derby route only takes 10 days even though it's several times the length of the Trans-Horse project. This is the speed of highly organised imperial messengers with the supporting cultural infrastructure, professional marathon runners where Yli-Vakkuri and Toivottu poika were leisure hikers.
The Mongolian landrace horse is a very distant relative of the breeds above, but much lighter and smaller than the agriculturally focused modern Finnhorse - typicaly standing at 142 cm / 14 hh at most. (This would've also been common for Finnhorses before the 19th century.) What really differentiates them from Western breeds, however, is the way they're trained and raised in semi-feral herds, and it's said that while the rider may decide where the pair is headed, the horse is the one to decide how to get there.
also it's not quite google maps, but there is a lovely site called Viabundus!
the last i checked, the map of roads stretches from Calais, France to Moscow, Russia west to east and from KoŔice, Slovakia to Tornio, Finland south to north. it doesn't cover all of Europe, for example Sweden and Norway are empty at the moment, but it is quite extensive and still being worked on! in addition to showing the old roads, you can calculate the distance and travel time from one city to another, and there are a lot of options:
and that's not all! here's a description from the site itself (emphasis mine):
"Viabundus is a freely accessible online street map of late medieval and early modern northern Europe (1350-1650). Originally conceived as the digitisation of Friedrich Bruns and Hugo Weczerka's Hansische HandelsstraĆen (1962) atlas of land roads in the Hanseatic area, the Viabundus map moves beyond that. It includes among others: a database with information about settlements, towns, tolls, staple markets and other information relevant for the pre-modern traveller; a route calculator; a calendar of fairs; and additional land routes as well as water ways."
it's quite neat and also free! i hope someone else finds it as fascinating and cool as i did :)
I love that there's a story that Murderbot is simultaneously telling and retelling and also pretending isn't important at all about how it 100% got run over by a haulerbot once. Might not even officially remember it, but knows it happened. Probably not that big a deal. Definitely doesn't have any trauma about that, that'd be silly. Fuck those things though. Runnin into shit all the time. Can't trust 'em.
There's a very casual mention about what actually went wrong at ganaka pit and what all the haulerbots were doing while the secunits and comfort units were busy. Murderbot moves on immediately and barely mentions it, and then goes >:((( every single time haulerbots are mentioned throughout the rest of the series.
