If you’re reading that and thinking, ‘well, why hide it?’ then kudos, you’re probably a decent human being who doesn’t place immediate prejudice on another person for being wired differently to you.  Or, alternatively, you just don’t know what ‘asexual’ really means in a human context (not a plant context - trust me, that one got old the very first time), so here it is, as plain as I can make it:

Asexuality defines a lack of sexual attraction.

I just.. don’t feel it.  At all.  Like, ever.  It’s as foreign to me as the idea of not feeling sexual attraction likely is to sexuals (also known as ‘allos’ in the ace community sometimes).  

Now, if you’re still asking yourself, ‘why hide it’, then well done, you’ve passed the test.  I’m so proud.  Have a baked good of your choice. Here’s the primary answer:

People are jerks.  

The responses I’ve had when I have put my trust in people and told them I’m asexual have ranged from pure and utter confusion, outright denial, name-calling (’freak’, ‘broken’), asking if I’ve ever been abused (the answer to which is a defiant no), making the plant jokes, and more.  People just do not want to accept it, and hey, I kind of get it.  I’ve met people who don’t like chocolate before, but the difference there is I accept their decision and enjoy more chocolate for myself, because their dislike of chocolate doesn’t directly affect me.

I guess the second question might be ‘why now?’  Simple answer: I’m tired.  I’d rather be able to just.. be myself, without having to worry about stigma.  That’d be nice.

Anyway I have a lot of thoughts which I’m sure I’ll end up using this blog for.  I’m also leaving the inbox open if you want to have some ace ranting or ace musing at someone who gets it.

Thank you so much to everyone who expressed an interest in joining our team. :-) The team is now full up but there are lots of other teams looking for members so I know you’ll all find something fantastic. I’d recommend taking a look at the ‘GishwhesTeamFinder’ tumblr and/or submitting a post so that you can see who’s recruiting and people know that you’d looking for a team. There is also the Gishwhes Network facebook group where a lot of teams post up that they are looking for people, and people post that they are looking for teams - this is particularly active at the moment so it’s a good place to find a team/some teammates who are a good fit. We have some space (currently 5 spaces) on team WeAimToMisbehave this year and would love it if we could fill the team with people who like our Team Philosophy (summarised here) and think that they would be a good fit for our non-competitive team.

I’d say that if you want to participate but haven’t registered because you don’t know what your physical and/or mental capacity may be when the week arrives and so you’re worried about potentially ‘letting down your team’ then definitely take a look. Especially at the 3rd point down.

Why are Bucklemming still writing for SPN? WHY? They’re just terrible writers and their dialogue… I could literally write better SPN episodes than them. Absolute festering garbage with next to no redeeming features.

Since I got some nice enthusiasm, here it is, Crowley facts ala reality. I’ve noticed there’s a lot of confusing fanon about him and I’m not entirely sure about where some of it came from. It’s fun, but since there’s comparatively little fan focus on Crowley and it’s mostly confusion and wishful thinking, there needs to be someone fact checking this stuff. The other boys have their hordes of devotees, it’s about time the Crowley set got organized. So let’s start with powers and abilities.

Despite fans frequently assuming he does in fanfic, fan art, recaps, meta analysis, and idle wank, Crowley’s never been shown in canon to have:

Superhuman Strength

I honestly don’t know why so many fans assume Crowley has super strength when he’s never displayed anything resembling it. Perhaps because demons and monsters in so many other shows do? 

Whatever the reason, the idea that Crowley can break someone with his bare hands is based on not a damned thing in canon. Most demons aren’t stronger than their meatsuits. Some ancient, powerful demons are exceptions, but Crowley isn’t. 

This is why he tends to rely on his magic, the element of surprise, and various weapons for when he needs to go full Pesci on someone. Every time he’s gone hand-to-hand with a strong fighter without these things, he’s lost.

Accelerated Healing

When I asked fans why they think Crowley is a super-fast healer, they pointed to his lack of lingering cosmetic damage from episode to episode, ignoring the times when Crowley did show lingering signs of cosmetic damage (like between “Devil May Care” and “Slumber Party”).

Or the fact that Sam and Dean – two characters who obviously don’t have super-healing – would be nothing but scar tissue by now if the show never let their cuts and scrapes vanish through the power of TV magic. Also, we now know Crowley employs witches who can repair and even resurrect his meatsuits, so… yep.

Anyway, I could go on and on about fan-assumed swag Crowley doesn’t have in canon, so let’s talk about powers and abilities he does have:

Scary Good Hearing

Used conspicuously in “Blade Runners”. Twice. No one noticed.

Well Read Like a Mofo

For some reason, a bunch of fans have been insisting for the last few years that Crowley’s vast knowledge of languages, witchcraft, history, and religion is the result of him being more than just a demon. They say he must be an angel. Never mind that being an angel didn’t guarantee that Cas would know the forbidden fruit was a quince or help Lucifer find a Hand of God on his own.

Crowley’s done all the homework, and now he’s more educated than any other character on the show. I think that qualifies as a super power, don’t you?

These ones are self-explanatory.

The Crossroads Suite (teleportation, wish granting, binding kiss)

Boss Ass Demon Powers (psychokinesis, pyrokinesis, biokinesis)

Basic Demon Powers (insanely high pain threshold, blood magic, stealth)

Witchy Powers (serious spell casting, hex bags, sigils)

That’s a lot of impressive powers. Kinda wondering why people feel the need to embellish. Ah, well. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Fully agree with all of this (especially his being ridiculously well-educated - I mean, what else would you spend all those decades of damnation doing? Adding his cultural experience to that, too - art and antiquities.) 

I think though, that the ‘super strength’ and ‘super healing’ assumptions are less based on him actually having those things as ‘powers’ and more him having access to those things through witchcraft. Like, we know the reason he’s always smart enough to run out on a fight if he gets chance is because he’s no harder than your average bloke, but there’s also the fact that he can still kick your arse by flinging you against a wall with his mad witch skills.
