On further reflection on the Odyssey 2026 I came to the conclusion: It was mediocre, and its mediocrety irritates me.
Let me tell you one of my quams was the color pallete, or the lack thereof. This is a constant grip of mine with modern media that isn't animated, and that is, they don't utilize color like they should. At this point, just shoot it in black and white, my guy!
That actually would be good for this movie. Brightness would have to be increased for many scene so we could see what the heck is happening, but imagine this: the fire during the final battle of Troy is still in color and brings whatever it touches into a faded color.
All scenes with Odysseus and Penelope are in color, because she brings vibancy and vitality to his life?????! It would be like 2.5 scenes; before he leaves for Troy, when he is in her arms after cleaning house (color starts to bleed in) and the final scene.
Athena being dressed in white is great, keep that, because now she's a bright spot in all the gray and black. A guiding star if you would.
Calypso being in a tattered white dress could also work since she is trying to fulfill the role meant for Athena. Bonus points if you allow her low saturated colors because she's also trying to take the place of Penelope in Odysseus life.
I just don't know why directors believe you have to have the color pallete of depression, vacancy, and sand (beige mom shit) in order to have a serious big boy film. (Yes, I realize some/most of it is aesthetic, tone, setting, etc. But why choose no color??? Color is fun and symbolic!!!)
In contrast, just watched The Mummy (1999) for the first time recently (loved it!!💖). It has a similar color palette but is wildly more engaging and beautiful. Also, I can see what's happening in the dark scenes while still knowing they take place in the dark.
