Your check engine light isn't a warning β it's a text message
The check engine light gets a bad reputation because it can mean anything from 'your gas cap isn't tight' to 'your engine is about to eat itself.' The trick is knowing the difference.
Solid yellow light. The car has stored a diagnostic trouble code. Something is wrong, but it's not urgent β the car has decided you can keep driving. Get it scanned within a few days. Common causes: loose gas cap, oxygen sensor, evap system leak, mass airflow sensor, catalytic converter (that one's expensive).
Flashing check engine light. This is different. A flashing light means active engine misfire, and continuing to drive can destroy your catalytic converter in a matter of miles. Pull over when safe, get it towed if you can. This is not a 'I'll deal with it Saturday' situation.
What a scan actually tells you. A code like P0301 means 'cylinder 1 misfire.' It does NOT tell you why β could be a spark plug, a coil, an injector, a compression issue, or a vacuum leak. That's the difference between a $10 scan at an auto parts store and a real diagnostic β the diagnostic figures out why.
Got a light on right now? Bring it by 1STOP Car Care #1 in Hialeah and we'll scan it free β solid or flashing, doesn't matter. A real mechanic (not a computer) reads the code, tells you exactly what's causing it, and quotes the repair honestly before we touch a wrench. No pressure, no made-up problems.
