So much of discovering or diagnosing autism is focused on autistic suffering. I feel the reason so many actually autistic advocates are told we're not really autistic is because we show more than just the negatives of being autistic. We show ourselves surviving, and thriving, which goes against the narrative of what autism is.

I think some of the loneliness of autism is that you feel like you hurt people just by Interacting Wrong, but you donât know how to Interact Right, and the more effort you put into it, the more exhausted you are and the more artificial it comes across (with the end result of people still being upset with you). and itâs not anyoneâs fault for not liking Being Interacted With Wrong, and itâs not your fault for doing it so wrong, but it is very, very lonely.
I have auditory processing disorder, so sometimes when people talk it just sounds like a jumbled mess of noise. After the third try of understanding what someone said, I usually just chuckle, say yeah, and desperately hope that was an acceptable answer.

When I used to ask "When are we leaving?" I always got "Not yet," which was frustrating because I didn't want to leave, I just wanted to know how much more time I had left, but I was a kid, and didn't know how to properly word things.
thinking about the time a former housemate said to me "hey I put these box fans in the living room because it's hot" while gesturing to the fans that I was actively sitting in front of because it was hot. and I said "okay thanks." and she kept standing there like she was waiting for something else so I said "am I blocking the airflow? do you need me to move?" and she said no I'm just letting you know they're here, in the living room, for circulation. and I said well yes, I did put that together. I am enjoying them. thank you. and she looked confused. so I asked "am I meant to do something with this information or are you just informing me?" and she said no I'm letting you know they're here because It's Hot In Here. she seemed a bit aggravated, and her emphasis seemed deliberate.
it took me asking three more times before she finally told me she wanted me to leave the fans where they are instead of moving them to my room or something. and I said oh! I had no intention of doing so but thank you for letting me know what the expectation is.
about a month later she brought up that conversation as the moment it actually clicked for her that I Am Autistic And Will Not Magically Intuit The Unspoken Request You Didn't Ask Me.

hate when i say âi canât do [thing] because of my autismâ and hear (usually lower support needs) autistics say âwell iâm forced to do [thing] so i have toâ in response.
there will be autistics who never can do [thing] no matter how forced, no matter how punished, no matter how anything.

especially hate hearing autistics say âwell if i didnât do [thing] i would get abusedâ as if we autistics also didnât get abused, except we still couldnât do [thing].
you are dismissing higher support needs autistic who are or have been abused.
