âI donât doubt that. I could use a good ass-kicking right about now. Might wake up this old bag of bones a little more,â he joked, switching hands. âAs far as I can tell, you are a treat. Digging the whole disregard for boundaries thing. Punk rock.â
âYeah? Put âem up, tiger!â she joked, her hands coming up in fists for a moment before she quickly backtracked. âActually, Iâm totally kidding, I donât want to kick your ass. You seem like a swell guy, aside from the shanking bit.â She chuckled, holding up a hand in a rock ân roll sign. âHey, fuck the man, am I right?â
vndcrscn:
âWhat if I donât carry a wallet?â He countered before peeling his hand away from his face to stare at the other. âWhat if Iâm one of those people that just doesnât carry any sort of valuable with them and is patiently waiting for someone like you to take my wallet so I can shank you?â Resting his head on his palm, he didnât break eye contact for a moment longer before cracking and letting out a dry chuckle. âIâll be sure to stay up so you donât get shanked.â Glancing at his coffee, her question pulled him away from it momentarily before he simply shrugged. âProbably the heavy burden of life and its many questionable inconveniences like spiders, fanny packs, pringlesâ cans, and social interaction.â
âThen you live the kind of life that I want to live,â she replied, an unreadable smile on her face as she met his gaze for as long as he held it before breaking away as well, chuckling and taking a swig of her own coffee. âYeah, you know, Iâd prefer not to get shanked, but you should know that Iâm pretty damn tough and Iâd probably kick your ass,â she added with a laugh, tilting her head back. She pouted. âDonât be like that. Social interaction isnât nearly as bad when itâs with me. Not to toot my own horn or anything like that.â
@noelblackwell
âThis would be the perfect time for you to buy me a drink,â she said, sitting on the stool next to him. âLook at me, Iâm here without a drink in sight, and I so desperately need one today. And you, dear, sweet, Noel, are my friend for the evening, so you get the distinct pleasure of buying the first round. Thatâs how this whole friendship thing works, right?â she asked, raising an eyebrow at him with a mischievous smirk spread across her features.Â

taliya couldnât help but let out a rather amused chuckle as the girl stood up, her coffee cup in hand. clearly everyone in the cafe had a bystander mentality - and perhaps taliya would have intervened if the situation escalated. â you got it, â taliya nodded sincerely as her gaze followed the girl who walked over to the disgruntled customer. she hadnât quite been expecting a scene like that - it caused her eyes to widen in disbelief, waiting for the manâs reaction to which he was clearly fuming. brief words were exchanged before the man grabbed a handful of napkins in a clenched fist and made his way out of the shop. â look what youâve done - now youâll have to go get yourself another coffee. â
âyou know, my coffee was cold, anyway,â she replied, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she sat back down. âthis is the only place where thatâs actually worked. other times, whoeverâs being an asshole has just yelled at me. is this what they mean by southern hospitality?â she joked, crossing her legs lightly and leaning back in her chair. some people had followed her as she sat down, staring in disbelief, but now, the attention of he shop seemed to have shifted elsewhere. âi should have probably started by introducing myself before i threw coffee in a guyâs face, but i guess some things just have to happen out of orderâanyway, iâm austen, as in the victorian novelist, not the city in texas.â

@evadelvecchio liked for a starter!!
âSo anyway, he yells, way too loudly, it was sticky everywhere! And the entire bar goes silent and the whole thing was so damn awkward, and I wasnât about to make a joke in that kind of situation, no, I was trying to distance myself from him as much as I possibly could. In the end, though, I went home with his friend.â She shrugged. âHe wasnât too happy about it, but he shouldnât have been such a weirdo in the middle of the bar.â
@adamfosterr liked for a starter!!
Austen plopped down at the table across from the stranger. âBe a doll, wonât you?â she asked, letting her bag drop onto the table between them before she pulled off her high heels. âThese shoes are killing me and thereâs nowhere else to sit. Well, at least nowhere interesting. Iâve never been one for sitting by myself, honestly. Youâre probably that kind of person, considering that you were sitting by yourself before I got here, but I think that you should consider my arrival into your quiet afternoon a vast improvement on the day.â

Itâd been a long, arduous day full of phone calls, late night coffee runs and mostly radio static. Times like these were a godsend most days, but there were other times he found himself missing the loud, exhilarating frenzy of the bigger cities. He missed being on call and actually having something to look forward toâ as morbid as it seemed. Itâd become routine, and Nolan was slowly becoming mentally drained from the lack of excitement (as lacking of excitement as you could get with a job like his). Pressing his two fingers into the bridge of his nose, his eyes naturally fell shut as even his own cup of coffee couldnât keep him awake much longer.
âHey, yo, buddy,â Austen said, rather obnoxiously snapping her fingers at the man as he started to fall asleep. âIf you fall asleep, I canât promise that you wonât get your wallet stolen. I canât promise that I wonât steal your wallet. Donât make yourself an easy target, just stay awake or go the fuck home.â She leaned back in her seat, sipping on what had to have been her fourth cup of coffee in a rowâand it was definitely starting to show between her jitters and the fast and loud way she spoke. âWhatâs got you so damn tired, anyway?â
erikcisms:
        âOh â Oh, no.â Erika muttered when she sat at the bar and caught sight of a person she had done her best to avoid for the better part of a year ( though it felt like an eternity ). Panic arose when she turned to the nearest person, her puppy dog eyed expression already up and ready to go. âListen, I need a favour,â she said with a halfhearted smile, âif you pretend to be with me and help me avoid the male in the blue checkered shirt, Iâll give you a free haircut â which letâs be real, you should have started thinking about getting already. So, do we have a deal?â
Austenâs eyebrow raised, and while she wanted to say something about the haircut comment, she didnât, instead feeling a mischievous smile spread across her features. âWell, in what way should we be together?â she asked, finding a whole lot of fun in trying to pretend to be someone she wasnât. It endlessly fascinated her, reinventing herself. She tried to do that everywhere she went, though her personality was so strong that it rarely changed. âBecause I can really sell it, if thatâs what you want,â she added before winking once.
delphcaswell:
ââi think iâm literally about to throw upââ delphine let out, totally grossed out by the scene in front of her. a man, probably part of the traveling circus that was coming through for a few days, was eating a giant live spider in the middle of the streets. it was all part of a little show of course but it still looked disgusting and a shiver ran through her spine before looking a the person next to her. ââwhat if he like, chokes on it and it gets angry?ââ she let out, knowing full well it probably didnât make any sense but still, the whole scene still looked quite unimaginable to the brunette.Â
âdonât look,â austen replied, completely enraptured by the man. she always found creepy-crawly things like that to be endlessly fascinating, thanks to the deep-seated morbid curiosity that honestly plagued her. âiâll let you know when itâs over. you want a play by play? because iâm pretty sure the spider is fighting being eaten right now, and itâs a fight between this guyâs tongue and the spider in question.â

Newness. Itâs all about newness for Austen. She felt that she was born to be a writerâand after being named after Jane Austen, she knew that there was nothing else that would satisfy her. Being a writer, however, means having the widest breadth of experiences that she can in order to write with the most sincerity. After researching her latest bookâshe spent six months living in Australia, traveling across the continent and getting to know the lay of the landâshe needed a quiet place to write, and Sterling seems like exactly the kind of city she needs.
Before she left for Australia, she was in a car accident, and she knew that the man who was with her, who died, was not the person who should have died. He was her best friendâs husbandâand Austen was having an affair with him. Once everything came out, she knew she couldnât go back to the life she had partially settled into there, and so she left. She went to Australia and then she went to Sterling, and she didnât look back. She definitely didnât apologize.
Itâs not like she has anywhere else to be. It was only her and her mother growing up, and her mother certainly isnât the kind of person that Austen wants to be around anymore. As soon as she was able to get out of there, she did, and she hasnât looked back since. Austen doesnât mind the solitude. It helps her be a better writerâand after six bestsellers under her pseudonym, she figures that the solitary life sheâs been leading has worked out well for her.
Austen is selfish and she knows it. She doesnât care about that, however, knowing also that sheâs not willing to make connections past the surface level. The only thing that happens after that is that people leave or they die or she leaves and sheâs not willing to go through that heartache over and over. She can be standoffish because of it, seeming aloof and cold when sheâs really warmer underneath all that than she lets on. Thereâs just always something holding her back and after years, she canât shake itâso sheâs stopped trying.
iâm rly fkn terrible at open starters so LIKE/REPLY TO THIS FOR A STARTER!!

the coffee shop near her apartment was never crowded this time of day - hence why she always found herself here at the exact same time almost every day. turns out she was far more addicted to caffeine then sheâd like to admit. she glanced up from her mug when she heard the angry shouts of an older man at the counter, clearly disgruntled by something. he shoved his cup back towards the barista who was clearly taken aback. profanities spewed from his mouth as he grunted in frustration. you have one job and itâs not that damn hard ! he shouted. his words caused the girl to roll her eyes, clearly a majority of the attention was on him. taliya turned to the person next to her, â looks like someone could use a swift kick int he groin, â she suggests, â you think that would teach him some manners ? â
austen rolled her eyes before she continued to hurriedly touch-up her makeup. âsome people canât be taught, no matter how hard you try,â she said, shaking her head slightly before looking up. she glance down at her watch, realizing she had more time than she realized and leaned back in her chair with a sigh, her fingers drumming lightly against the table with the restlessness that always seemed to course through her body, her gaze flicking around the shop before going back to the woman who spoke. âitâs worth a try, though,â she added with a crooked smirk. âwatch my stuff, would ya?â she asked, standing up with her cup in hand and walking over to the man who was yelling. âhey, asshole,â she said, waiting until he turned around before throwing her long-since cooled coffee in his face. âif you donât wash that out, itâll stain. and at the same time, you can feel free to wash out your dirty fucking mouth.â you bitch! austen rolled her eyes. âtry a new insult next time. and find somewhere else to harass people, huh?â
