The main theme of I Can’t Think Straight is that you can only find true love if you are true to yourself. In some romantic comedies the idea is that if you meet the person of your dreams they’ll sort all your problems and you’ll be happy. I wanted to make it clear that you have to solve your problems first to have a chance of getting that person.

So I’m honestly tired of giving energy to these folks because the truth is, Tom and Zawe seem extremely happy and that’s really all that matters in the end no matter what anyone online has to say about it, good or bad.

But when I use tumblr which is rare, it’s usually to respond to things I see regarding the treatment of Zawe in the fandom and how is much deeper rooted than most of her critics like to admit. I have seen the same repetitive nonsense over the years “it’s just my opinion/we can not like her and it doesn’t mean we’re racist/we’re not jealous” and let me tell you something- if you are spending this amount of energy on a person, finding fault in everything they do, assigning them negative personality traits that are strictly speculation with no evidence, and seeking them out to share your negative opinion on the regular, then you have lost any credibility that your opinion may have held. Because it’s no longer a harmless opinion on a public forum where yes, any of us can share anything, it’s a pattern of intentional, pathological behavior that comes from a deeper rooted issue.

We ALL have celebs we don’t like. The problem with some of you is that rather than focus your energy toward things you like and enjoy, you derive some sort of sick pleasure from consistently immersing yourself in shit you claim to hate. You are so shaken by this parasocial love interest having his own life, his own love, and his own choices that have nothing to do with ANY of us, that you need to take back control by assigning yourself a role of importance. If you hate on her, you get to make yourself feel better, and you also get to pretend you see something others don’t and that it makes you special. “I know him so much better, I can see that he’s not happy or truly him.”

The fact is, none of us know him, or if he’s happy or what his day to day life is, but the majority of the fandom are reacting to what we know of them and see, and not spinning conspiracy theories full of holes to explain away basic, normal human behavior. If the man is smiling, to you it’s fake. If he’s not smiling, he’s miserable. If they’re private, they broke up or hes ashamed. If they’re public, it’s PR. No matter what you have resolved yourself to refuse acceptance of what is in front of you.

But at the end of the day, don’t you dare fucking try to act like the racism in this fandom is being blown up and minimize the damage it does to people who have to see it. There are people on every platform using monkey emojis, insults about Africa, and the actual fucking n-word not just toward Zawe but their BABY. ”Well that’s not me I don’t do that.” Guess what you do, you allow that shit to be perpetuated bc you trivialize it by saying wahhh I just don’t like her it’s my right. Tom and Zawe are not flawless and above criticism but there is the sharing of opinions and then there is chronic, malicious, vitriolic disrespect. And it’s in every male fandom. You’re not special or unique for hating on the partner of your idol. It’s copy and paste from actor to actor and you guys are eye-roll inducing, bad punchlines every single time.
