Matthew was glad for the familiar face as he saw Augustine approach to hold out a flame for him. He leaned in to light his cigarette before drawing back, contemplating how he was going to answer. His eyes trained on the witch's face as he inhaled the smoke and chemicals, the act of smoking giving him some measure of comfort even if he was being faced with Augustine's question.
"I like to switch things up from time to time," he answered snootily as the smoke was exhaled past his lips. Would smoking do his body harm now that he was depowered?
"Well that's horse shit," Augustine retorted with a smirk, pocketing the lighter and nursing over the answer, or lack there of. It seemed pretty clear the demon had something stopping him from lighting the cigarette himself, but what? "What if I ask why we haven't had any lessons this spring? Is that also you switching things up?"

location: the sidewalk outside liber (klin)
While there were no official Vibe Fest parties in Klin, it did not stop various bars and clubs from throwing many of their own to take advantage of the revelry. Matthew hated Vibe Fest just as he hated most forms of merriment, but the hate was especially strong that evening.
He had stupidly chosen this weekend to come by Liber again after being a recluse at home for so long and he was starting to think that it was a terrible idea. It did not help that he was still depowered and opening himself a portal to go home was not an option.
Liber was very lively, which was always a good thing, but Matthew still felt the need to step out for a moment. He exited his wine bar and walked a bit of the ways down before pulling out his sleek silver cigarette case to fish one out to place between his lips. He would normally have lit it magically with a flick of his fingers, but alas... The fallen deity growled in annoyance and flagged down a passing person to ask (rather menacingly)...
Augustine picked up his step, seeing Matthew not far up ahead frustratingly try to find someone with a light. He fished a lighter from his own pocket as he approached, softly commenting, âHere.â He held up the small flame, waiting for Matthew to light the cigarette as he asked, âNow why the fuck are you of all people asking for a light?â He also wanted to ask why Matthew hadnât been in contact regarding their lessons in agesâ but he had a sinking feeling as he held out the lighter that the answer would please neither of them.
Rahui was thrilled to hear that she would arrive to Vievecor just in time for the festival, she loved live music, and was a big fan of various of the bands playing at the Absynthia.
She put on an all black outfit consisting of a cropped tank, jacket, cargo pants and boots. She arrived early in the day to drink, dance to Røz, and cause problems. The mischievous spirit switched between dancing, and walking around stealing lighters and cigarettes, only to put them back at random peopleâs pockets, for no good reason other than wanting to fuck with peopleâs heads in a harmless way. Eventually, she grew tired of that, and tried to switch her activity to lurking at the bar for a while, and snatching drinks out of the table whenever a bartender set one down. However, her activity was cut short when she stole her second drink, as a hand settled firmly on her shoulder before she could bolt. The spirit turned around, grinning at the stranger and taking a step closer to them, with their stolen drink still in hand. âThank you for buying me this, you know I really appreciate it.â Her speech wasnât entirely fluent, and her accent was strong, indicating she wasnât too used to speaking in this language.
âSome fuckinâ nerve,â Augustine commented, reaching out and swiping back the drink as he sarcastically asked, âBeen scamming people out of their drinks all night? Or am I just special?â
Gwen made her way over to the POS to enter in the manâs order before her head whipped up in surprise. That order. His order. She half expected to see Auggie smiling back at her when she looked up, a small frown following in its wake as she moved to put it in. âUhh, sure, got it,â she mumbled with a nod of her head before bringing her attention back to the screen. âOnions and bacon on a burger, interesting choice...â she trailed off, debating on continuing before deciding to hell with it. âYou know, I used to have a cousin who ordered the same thing. Except heâd get it with my famous Parmesan garlic truffle fries. Not exactly a salad, but theyâre damn tasty,â she mused, smiling more to herself. Flashes of memories grilling and cooking with Auggie, playfully bullying each otherâs skills and talking shit about their family over beers played in her thoughts. âNot too late to change your mind before I hit send,â she teased, wiggling her eyebrows playfully.
Augustine gave an audible sigh. Gwen sounded like she had very much processed his death and accepted itâ perhaps in a much more suitable fashion than his immediate family, to boot. His cousin was more than a handful though, and the fact she was casually mentioning her dead cousinâs order to a stranger reminded him the longer he put matters off, the worse it was going to be.
âFuck the salad,â he mumbled, wishing he had ordered something to drink instead of eat. What a mess. âLook- why donât you just do us both a favor and take a seat,â he suggested, motioning to the empty seat across from him. Had his magic been stronger, he would have tried to force some semblance of privacy for the conversation. Hell, had he not been terrified of Gwen, he might have suggested a more private location even. How did you ask someone for that who viewed you as a stranger though, without coming off as a creep? Or just flat out admitting the truth up front? A semi public location was as good as it was gonna get, and the witch was grateful the joint was relatively quiet for the moment, with just a few other patrons present. âWe need to have a chat. Itâs about that cousin of yours youâre referring to- Augustine.â
Augustine couldn't help but roll his eyes, grinning. "Nah. Headed to some place called Maldives. Mab promised it's warm and sunny-- and private, so that's all I care about," he answered, taking one of the shots politely and raising it up slightly as he agreed, "To a job well done," before tossing it back with a grimace.
"Damn. So is she paying for your trip to the Maldives too?" It was a place of luxury that someone like Ayumu had definitely heard of before, but it was also a place that was severely out of their budget.
"Tch, you directors and your privileges..." They said to get the comment in as they clinked their glasses together and tossed them back, the alcohol burning a familiar path down their throat.
-----------
"Damn right us directors and our privileges," Augustine agreed with a laugh. "This job's like herding cats. Get new grey hairs with each production anymore. Ah- and don't start on me causing you stress. We both had access to the script last I checked.. It was an adapted from broadway piece too-- so you had most of what you needed day one. Not my fault the song writers were late with the additional numbers added."
-----------
"Grey hairs, huh? Yeah I can see the new ones," Ayumu grinned and ran their fingers through the hair at Augustine's temple. "Right here!" they said and playfully tugged at a strand.
"The day when we're not blindsided by writers and their whims will be the day we'd have to worry. Don't worry, Gus Lynn. Despite your efforts, you've not fallen over to my bad side yet." Nor would he anytime soon, Ayumu reckoned. "You're actually one of the few directors I've worked with who generally keeps things together despite all the usual dramas on these sets. Your one-man vacation is well-deserved."
-----------
Augustine gently shoved Ayumu off, laughing as he responded, âIf you really feel that way then you can thank me by finding me a nice plus one so itâs less Gilliginâs Island and more Love Boat. Downside to all this work is it leaves me feeling like a celibate monk.â
-----------
"Hey. What if I want to go on an all expenses paid trip to the Maldives? Have you ever thought of that?" Ayumu pointed out. "How rude of you to dangle this in front of me and then tell me to find you a plus one..." they whined although there was no real malice behind their words.
-----------
âI had no idea you were so eager to sign an NDA and be fuck buddies, Ayumu,â Augustine retorted with a drunken grin. âIâm always rude, arenât I? This shouldnât be new news,â he added jokingly.
-----------
"NDA? Why would we need an NDA to do that, Gus?" Ayumu laughed rather loudly. "I don't kiss and tell. Or rather, fuck and tell." Although that was not entirely true.
-----------
Augustine gave the choreographer a surprised look, dumbfounded for a moment at the fact he hadnt written off what had mostly been a joke. He shook his head and just laughed it off, responding, âAnd this is why youâre not going to Maldives.â
-----------
"Whaaaat?" Ayumu whined and leaned themself against Augustine's side again. "You're extremely rude. But then I suppose that's just your natural state of being. Just for that, you're going to the Maldives on your own." They wagged a warning finger at their friend. "NDAs for a holiday? I can't believe you, Gus," Ayumu laughed. "Hollywood's really gotten it's claws into you, huh?"
-----------
âI prefer not to be front page gossip,â the director retorted with a roll of his eyes. âAlways use a NDA, Ayumu. Unless you like learning the hard way, of course.â
-----------
"Eh. Who's going to bother with a lowly choreographer like myself?" they countered with a shrug. "I'm not a big name director like yourself, Gus Lynn, sir." Ayumu leaned in to breathe it into Augustine's ear and dragged his name out teasingly on purpose.
-----------
Augustine felt his skin crawl in a delightful manner, letting out a soft groan from Ayumuâs arguably dumb antics. He knew the other was just giving him hell, riling him up in their equally drunk states.
âYouâre a wolf in sheepâs clothing, Nakatomi. Donât think I donât know better,â Augustine quipped, reaching for his drink to take another sip of.
-----------
"Am I?" Ayumu grinned, all teeth with a final breath against Augustine's ear before they pulled away with a laugh. They always enjoyed riling others up in fun and sexy ways, although perhaps not always fun and sexy ways.
"Bet you like my flirting though. I saw the way you were practically shivering when I said your name, Director Gus."
-----------
âDo you enjoy toeing dangerous lines?â He sighed, throwing back the remainder of his drink. âSome directors would be threatening to blacklist you for your bullshit,â Augustine reminded him cautiously, despite his cheeks still being tinged pink.
He slid Ayumuâs glass closer to them, adding, âJust drink your damn drink already.â
-----------
Ayumu cackled to themself at Augustine's words. Watching the man's reactions was entertainment enough. They reached out for their drink and brought it to their lips. "I think you know me too well by now to ask me that question," they answered with a wink.
"I also know that you're not like most directors. Or perhaps you just enjoy my antics," Ayumu grinned and tipped their glass back to take a big mouthful.
-----------
âIâm a glutton for punishment,â Augustine retorted with sarcasm, flagging down a bartender to grab himself a water after inhaling what was in retrospect far too many syrupy sweet cocktails and shots.
-----------
"Clearly," Ayumu laughed. "And I enjoy dishing it out." They tipped the rest of their drink back, finishing another good amount of alcohol as they set the glass back down on the counter. "Damn. Water already? You're such a lightweight."
-----------
Augustine gave the other an unamused look, smirking as he responded, âAnd you wonder why I didnât invite you to Maldives. Iâll invite a smokin hot piece of ass who doesnât enjoy mocking me so much, thanks.â
-----------
"Tch! Whatever~ You'd be missing out," Ayumu waved their hand at Augustine dismissively, as if they could shoo the other man's sentiments away with that action alone. "Who would you consider a smoking piece of ass on our production anyway? Or perhaps someone from that other film that was also shooting on the lot? I could think of a few..."
-----------
âWouldnât you like to know,â Augustine dismissed immediately. In an ideal world the answer would always be Isabelle, but he had long accepted that would never happen so long as she was married. He also couldnât deny heâd let his eyes linger perhaps a bit too long on several other individuals on set over the last few months, although he prided himself on being nothing short of professional when working.
âHumor meâ who would you suggest?â
-----------
"I would very much like to know..." Ayumu grinned before tapping their chin with a finger as they thought on their list of hot people.
"Naz. I hear she used to be a Bunny. I could just eat her up. Hmm.. That Elio is pretty hot too. The ex-porn star? I'm all for that. And don't tell anyone.. Or you could tell everyone, I don't care. Mab. I think she's smokin'," they finished with a dreamy look in their eyes.
-----------
âFirst rule, NDA⌠Second? Donât shit where you eat. Sure, Mabâs plenty attractive. But sheâs calling the shots here and Iâd prefer my working relationship with her continues to be a positive one. Couldnât pay me to fuck that up intentionally,â Augustine countered. âAs for the other two, Iâm sure theyâre chomping at the bit for the next opportunity after Grease. Last thing they will wanna be doing is laying beach side with anyone and risk missing a phone call about another role theyâd be a fit for.â He had been ready to leave it at that but could already hear one excuse in his head, quickly adding, âAnd before you say itâ Iâm not James, damn it. Iâm not about to start throwing someone in my productions because theyâre sleeping with me, nor do I think either of those two would appreciate such a thing.â
-----------
"Yeah, and we all love a bossy lady, don't we?" Ayumu waggled their eyebrows at Augustine because he actually agreed about Mab. They then proceeded to laugh out loud when Augustine quickly covered up what he was saying about the actors with a swift explanation. "No? Not at all? I imagine they'd be to easy to coax into bed too. I've heard the rumours. Especially about that Bunny..." they chuckled darkly before they added as an aside. "And that casting director of ours... He's sexy, but there's definitely something shady about him."
-----------
âThatâs an understatement,â Augustine agreed with a grin. âHeâs good at finding talent though, so I try to not look too deep past that or question shit. He seems close with Mab too, so Iâm keeping my nose out of it.â
-----------
"Ah. You see, now that little tidbit just makes me even more curious about their relationship..." Ayumu perked up. "They both had to start somewhere, right? Perhaps I should go and ask them. That'll give me a reason to talk to Mab." The executive producer hardly cared about a choreographer like Ayumu, but they were not going to let that stop him. "Wanna come with me? It'll beat you sitting here all by yourself."
-----------
âPass,â Augustine responded with a gesture of his hand. âIf I get up itâs to find a comfier spot to sit for a while till I sober upâ or just to head on out,â he explained. âI know- I know. Iâll an old man though compared to most of you lot, get over it.â
-----------
"Geez. You really are an old man..." Ayumu chuckled fondly before the pushed themself away the bar and gave Augustine a bow and an outstretched hand. "Shall we, Your Grace? Let's find you that comfortable seat to while away the rest of your night. That stool looks like a hazard."
-----------
âGod, youâre embarrassing,â Augustine grunted despite his amusement as he reached out and batted away Ayumuâs hand. He stood up and grabbed his water, nodding over to the far wall where he knew there was additional seating. âIâm gonna head that way if anyone asks. Have fun and please donât do anything I wouldnât.â
-----------
"Ah, but I couldn't let you walk all the way there on your own. What sort of gallant gentleman would I be?" Ayumu laughed as their hand was swatted away. Augustine was just too fun to rile up. They followed Augustine as he meandered to his newly designated corner and watched as he sank down into his seat.
"You enjoy yourself here, old man. I'll send the nurse to check on you in a hour," they chuckled before turning on their heel and making their way back towards where the crowds were dancing.

[Text] Got a human in Artemis who might be in to me⌠hard to tell. He showed up at my door the other day though unannounced.
[Text] Heâs got a connection with Rei though. Just not sure what. I need to talk to him though and figure it out. See if Rei knows the guy and is aware of his Artemis involvement.
[text] He works in the Fire Department with me. Also named Jeremiah. He's Elijah Remington's son. Don't know any Jacob but he has an older brother named Eiji or Zachariah.
âWellââ Carmen quietly began, though the young vampire remained a little bit distracted by the shadows lingering around the man. She found herself shrinking away from them, all the while trying to place why it sounded like he might recognise her. There could be a multitude of reasons, many of which probably werenât positive if what her mother and father had told her was correct. âI donât remember much from the past five yearsâŚâ She admitted, not quite realising how dangerous it might be to invite in the questions that might follow. âButâŚâ She trailed off, her dark eyes suddenly even more unsettled than before, like she was remembering something disturbing, or rather multiple. âNot really.â She answered, quietly, far off in the distance, before something brought her back. âBut I will have Isko.â She finished, a dream she was still holding onto. âDid I hurt you?â She asked, ââŚBefore?â
Augustineâs brows knit together in confusion and he shook his head. âNah. You couldnât have if you tried,â he assured softly, not advancing further with the shadows. Sympathetically, he asked, âSo youâre not with him then after all that? Gave it all up for him and he ghost ya or something?â
Well, that was interesting. Not the apology, not even the awkward half-step around it, but the complete absence of recognition. Sure, people walked away from things all the timeâand he certainly had the whole stoic, emotionally unavailable act downâbut the phrase had landed as flat between them as any pickup line would have. According to him anyway.
âDidnât wanna waste my time?â she repeated, turning her head a fraction. âHow charming. Would you care to elaborate?â There was no heat in it, the edge of amusement had slipped back into her voice, lighter but no less deliberate. Her fingers drummed once against the table before her palm flattened against it in a quiet, decisive tap. âTell you what. Iâll get you that beer,â she said, already shifting out of the booth. âIn the meantime, you can try to come up with a compelling alibiâor another apology. Dealerâs choice.â Jo paused just briefly at his side, lips pulling into a smirk. âDon't start any bar fights without me."
She didnât wait for a reply. By the time she turned toward the bar, she was already finishing off what remained of her drink, the last swallow quick and easy. She wasn't technically on duty, and if she was going to buy a stranger a beer, she wasnât about to sit there empty-handed. Still, her attention never drifted far. She caught his reflection in the back bar mirror as she rested her forearms against the counter and ordered two more. While the bartender turned away, her gaze angled just enough to keep Faust in view without making it obvious. He didnât strike her as the bolting type, but sometimes people surprised you. When the beers came, she slid a few crumpled bills across the bar, closed her hand around the necks, and turned back without hesitation.
By the time Jo slipped back into the booth, setting one of the bottles down in front of him with a soft thud, her expression had smoothed back into something easier, though her eyes stayed on him, expectant. âWell?â she prompted, nudging the beer a fraction closer to his hand. âLetâs hear it.â
âJesus Christâ youâre serious?â He gave her a bewildered look, adding, âWhen I said I didnât want you to waste your time, it was because I wasnât looking for sex. If I was, Iâd be using one of those apps for it or probably drinking in a shittier part of town than this.â He reached out and took one of the beers anyways, adding âCheers,â before taking a drink. Augustine set it down, painfully aware he was being rude but feeling justified considering the womanâs own pushy behavior of all but interrogating a stranger. And Augustine was hardly know for being cooperative.
âWanting an apology- typical woman, sure. But why the fuck do I need an alibi for not wanting to chat you up? You do realize you sound like a cop, right? Thatâs not how normal folks talk.â
Arjun surrendered the impulse to touch Auggie, noting the flicker of discomfort it stirred in him, and simply watched as he reentered the room. Admiring him from a distance held its own quiet satisfaction, after all. Closing the door, Arjun moved to the phone to place their coffee order. And cake. Why not? "Messy, sure, but I do find it interesting. How are the magic lessons going? Elijah is a good teacher. Has he taught you something useful?" The deity turned, undoing his robe. He felt like wearing some clothes..again. Something more..casual, to enjoy the witch's company, so he stepped to the wardrobe as he waited for an answer.
The witchâs gaze had followed Arjunâs form, silent as he listened and grateful when the deity stepped out of view so he could properly focus his thoughts on the discussion at hand.
He was silent for a moment, only to give a soft grunt in self amusement as Augustine thought how to word his reply. Lips upturned in a smirk, he answered, âLetâs just say Iâm probably not the caliber of student Elijah enjoys spending his time on, Iâm sure⌠Heâs a busy guy anyways. I donât expect him to solve my issuesâ heâs got enough shit on his plate. Iâve been outsourcing help and Iâve been going to different folks to work on mastering different aspects of Faustâs skillset. Transmutation⌠Shadow bullshit⌠And animal magicâ my fucking luck, right? This asshole can shift into a dog like a were wannabe.â

"Oh yeah? And where is this somewhere warm? Please don't say Mexico. That's where I'm planning on going," Ayumu teased, although giving Augustine an inkling to where they were going to vacation was also an invitation if the man wanted to meet them there.
"All the better for me when I attempt to drain this bar dry," they said greedily as the drinks were brought over and set down before them. Ayumu picked up one of the shots and held it out to Augustine. "Congratulations on another job well done!"
Eiji looked up from his phone, surprised heâd managed to actually catch him at home. âWhy, have you missed me?â He asked with a small, teasing smile. The latest bout of fever dreams to plague the city had actually worked out in favour of Eijiâs little lie. Somehow, heâd ended up in an undeniably suggestive situation with Faust, although the name the man had been going under was cause for question. Thankfully, this time Eijiâs new identity had remained in tact for the entirety, though it hadnât escaped him that his relationship to Lian and Rei in that dream was doing him no favours.
âI donât know, I was passing by this way and I just thought Iâd drop in⌠see how you are.â He answered with a small shrug. ââŚI still care, sue me.â There was a pause where he glanced past the other man to see the grocery shopping bags. âI guess you donât need my offer of a takeaway, then.â
Augustine felt his cheeks warm despite his eyebrows knitting together in irritation. Memories of the hazy dream in February came to the forefront of his mind, flirting with an individual who looked just like Jacob.
âObviously got too chummy over the holidays if you think this is fine,â he retorted, although he stepped back as if to invite the other in. What other choice did he have, after allâ more unsure than ever as to Faustâs actual connection with the other Artemis member. âTakeaway is typically unhealthy and overpriced. Iâm trying to eat healthier these days,â he added, unsure how Faust ate prior but figuring he could also hide the reasoning behind the excuse he was simply getting older.
âCall it punishment for ghosting me. Clearly Iâm not good at taking a hint.â Eiji responded, but entered into the apartment anyway. Heâd never been to Faustâs apartment, so he wasnât going to be able to tell if anything immediately looked out of place, but maybe he would get the chance.
Eiji rolled his eyes. âDid you turn into a health nut in your period of confinement?â He teased him, âRelax, if youâre that worried about your physique I wonât force you to eat takeaway. Though I donât think you have to worry about that somehow.â Although for someone like Eiji, whose diet consisted of instant noodles and microwave meals, the takeout might have even actually been considered healthy. âSo, how have you been?â He asked casually. He purposefully didnât bring up Februaryâs latest bout of fever dream, since it seemed like too much of a risk to bring up his connection to Lian and Rei. âDo you need some help with this?â He asked as he glanced down at the bags of groceries.
Augustineâs gaze clocked Jacob as he entered the apartment, studying his body language. It did *not* immediately strike him as someone comfortable in the space. He could have been wrong, but he leaned into his instincts anyways. âI can put away my own groceries, thanks⌠Besides. Itâs been a while. Canât expect you to remember where it all goes now, can I?â His tone was challenging, studying the other male as he tried to get a read on him and if he had been indeed telling the truth still when they met prior. Would the statement make him uneasy at all? Or would it be blown off? âTell you what. You go use the bathroom and wash up. Iâll finish up putting this both away and then make us something to eat.â Surely he would know *exactly* where Faustâs bathroom was, had they had such a history as suggested.
â
âWhy, because Iâm too pretty to remember where the milk goes?â He replied with a sarcastic smile, but he made it soften into something more teasing. âNot sure whether I should be insulted or not that youâre sending me to wash up right now.â He chuckled, a small part of him wishing Lian had somehow imbued him with x-ray vision to know where the bathroom was located, but that thought did remind him of the ring around his fingerâ the one that told him when someone was being dishonest. âIâm good for now. Besides, watching you get domestic might be too good of an opportunity to miss.â He smiled, situating himself on one of the kitchen barstools. âSo⌠did you do much over the holidays? You must be feeling a little better for not being recognised at the Ice Festival.â
â
Augustine snorted at the comment but noted the otherâs reluctance to leave the room. âAdverse to washing your hands before you eat now? Iâm definitely not letting you help if thatâs your reaction to good hygiene,â he retorted. âAnd no. Quiet holiday,â he added in a softer voice. Being dead meant no family gatherings, so Augustine hadnât done much. It was nice that his sister knew finally, and he knew he would need to slowly tell a few others, but had been in no major rush. The more who knew the more likely his role would be immediately outed and he would no longer be able to help track Artemis members. It also meant he himself would be at risk again of being attacked. âWhat about you?â
â
âYou have a sink, donât you?â Eiji tried to keep his own bluntness out of his voice and instead replaced it with the lighter, more playful tone he used for Jacob.
He noticed how the other man didnât comment on his mention of the Ice Festival. âAte too much, drank too much, watched too many Christmas films. The usual.â He shrugged casually. In actuality, it had been a depressing affair spent alone in his own misery, but he could at least pretend to have a cosy little family life.
After a moment he moved to wash his hands in the sink, âSo, what are you cooking?â
â
It felt like a game of chess, only it had Augustine gritting his teeth behind false politeness. âNow? *Burgers*,â he retorted, pulling out a cast iron griddle and grill press out of a lower cabinet. It hadnât been his original game plan, but the impromptu company had him improvising, and they were quick enough to throw together. He pulled out a package of ground beef from the fridge in addition to cheese slices and several vegetables before turning and asking, ââŚThatâs not going to be a *problem* is it?â With his fucking luck, the guy would be a vegetarian and he would have just given himself away if Jacob hadnât been lying. The other still making a point to avoid the bathroom only made him change his approach though, determined to get a read for how familiar the male was with Faustâs home. âWant a drink?â
â
Eiji knew something was wrong, if this was truly Faust, then he would have immediately called him out at the Ice Festival. He wouldnât have let him into his apartment and continued entertaining the idea, when he was pretty sure heâd only met the man twice in passing. Perhaps heâd changed allegiance, or had been forced into doing so, there were numerous options available when it came to the supernatural. He needed to find out more, but with the way the other man was responding, it seemed perhaps he knew something was amiss with him already.
Still, Eiji had to approach this how Jacob would. A seemingly innocent human with who was just put-out by having been ghosted. âNo?â He replied, his tone confused, âSounds good to me.â It was certainly a pathetic state of affairs that this was the first meal Eiji was having with someone in a very, very long time. And he didnât even *know* him.
He was returning back from the sink when the man spoke again, âSure, thanks.â
â
Augustine paused, not yet beginning to prep the burgers and instead turning to grab two beers from the fridge. He opened the bottles and casually moved towards Jacob, closing the space between them with a confident familiarity *despite* such a thing being reality. His years working at Vicium had left him able to do so with ease, setting one beer down on the counter beside Jacob as he pressed the other against his chest, encouraging the other to pause his step and the witch to effectively trap him with his body as he leaned in. His other arm moved to brace against the edge of the counter near where he had set his own drink, and he leaned in to speak softly in Jacobâs ear. âYouâre doing an awfully good job of saying nothing at all. Being in Artemis doesnât mean youâll leave my apartment in one piece if you keep on with this bullshit,â he threatened in a rather serious tone, only to pull back with a polite grin as he grabbed his drink and took a long sip before setting it down and tiring his attention back to prepping the ingredients. He knew it was risky making such a threat, but he would play it off if he had to. âSo- what do you like on your burger? Lettuce? Tomato? Cheese, perhaps?â His tone had shifted immediately, light and casual- a striking contrast to the threat moments earlier.
â
Eiji wasnât expecting the sudden movement of having the other man in his space, the way he leant in to trap him against the counter caught him off guard and he was glad for the brief moment of reprieve he had to try and control his facial expression as *Faust* was speaking into his ear. Eiji could feel his heart thudding nervously, a loud sound in his ears that irritated him as much as the sense of fear did. As much as he was begrudge to admit it, he wasnât a mastermind or a hardened criminal who knew what he was doing. He was getting by with the use of a spell, being able to lie relatively wellâ or so he thoughtâ and perhaps a little bit of arrogance. He didnât *know* how to play things and yet heâd put himself in the situation on purpose anyway.
Eiji was trying to quickly assess his options. Continue playing completely innocent? Call him out on what he knew? A bit of both? His fraction of a second was over and Eiji tried not to let his face betray him. âWhy are you making it sound like youâre *not* a part of Artemis?â He asked, ignoring his question and charm. Suddenly Eiji wished the beer in his hand was a heavier spirit and he put it down. âYou said you had to disappear after the attack, I get that. But you havenât been in contact with anyone, you talk to me like you hate my guts for no apparent reason, you wonât answer anything vaguely relating to Artemis and you justâ seem, *different.*â Eiji supposed he was going with the little bit of both option. âI just wanted to see if you were okay. I had one of those weird dreams the city seems to enjoy at every given holiday and I just thought maybe youââ It was a risk bringing up the dream, probably a big one. He just had to hope this guy didnât remember it in full detail. âI thought maybe you might want to see me too, but, guess Iâve been way off course.â
â
Augustine paused again, the false cheerfulness disappeared slightly as he calmly asked, âWhat? âŚYouâve never had another member of Artemis call out your own bullshit? Just because I donât like how shit gets done in the supe community doesnât mean Iâm a good guy,â Augustine retorted in a rather matter of fact tone as he sliced up a tomato and ignored the faint warmers to his own cheeks at the mention of a dream. He shrugged his shoulders with a self-amused smirk as he added, âJust because I donât keep contact with you doesnât mean I donât with everyone. Saw Eun-ji just the other day.â He had been scared shitless crossing her path, but he had none the less. âFunny you mention a dream though.â Now with Jacob in front of him, bits of it were coming back to Augustine⌠including some rather odd bits. *Namely* Jacobâs relations to others in it. He had had half a mind to go hunt Elijahâs son Rei down to see what he knew about the male before him, seeing now that Jacob was not going to be a problem that simply *went away.* âYou arenât the only one who wants answers.â
â
âAnd what bullshit is that supposed to be exactly?â Eiji breathed a faint laugh of disbelief. Did he really want to be asking that question? Probably not. If he gave him a blunt answer back and called him out on not really knowing Faust as intimately as he claimed, Eiji was going to have to own up to it and have landed himself in a whole ton of shit. Still, heâd committed to being the baffled lover now and he was going to have to stick with it.
Eiji felt his jaw tighten, annoyed by the smirk on the other manâs face. âOkay well, thanks for making it pretty evident that when you ghosted me you were actually doing me a favour.â Eiji was ready to try and leave when Faust spoke again. He knew heâd fucked up brining up the dream and it was backfiring almost immediately. First that preacher, then Zaman, now this guy was going to be poking around who he was, all because he was bored and had decided to play a stupid game.
âAnswers to what exactly?â Eiji tried to keep Jacobâs incredulous, confused tone. He made a mental note to ask Eun-ji. She was his friend from school, but to Jacob it was likely they might not have even met in person. âIâm not exactly sure what you think Iâm supposed to have done here.â He paused, âExcept for whatever it is that keeps you blushing every time I bring up the dream, of course.â One last shot in the dark. âDid you not enjoy the reminder? You were quite easy to get hot under the collar, Gus.â
â
Augustine sliced a tomato up as Jacob spoke, quickly moving then to slice an onion as well. He kept his hands busy moving to the lettuce next as he answered, âI was. And *you* had relatives. Namely Elijah Remingtonâs son, Rei, as your *twin.* Now Iâm not about to assume youâre the same damn thing in real life- Rei doesnât have a twin⌠But if I pay him a visit I bet between the two of us we could figure out the real connection there, couldnât we? Because I find it quite odd a human named Jacob somehow has a connection to such a high profile witch in the city⌠Especially considering Rei is *not* part of Artemis.â Auggie wasnât quite sure where to even find Rei, but presumed either Elijah would know or else someone in the pack could hunt him down if begged Faye for a favor.
â
âDo what you like.â Eiji responded dismissively. âI just know I donât have to stand here and listen to you jab at me when youâre not even willing to have a proper conversation about whatâs got you this way to begin with.â This was spiralling out of control and Eiji didnât know what to do. Heâd fucked up massively in underestimating him and now wasnât sure what was going to happen if he kept on digging. Rei was barely talking to him, so he wasnât even sure he could go to him, about this guy or the others that had managed to find him. He had been so wrapped up in it all, he was only just noticing the cold sensation through the finger wearing the ring, trying to tell him he was being deceived. âEnjoy your burgers.â He muttered, before turning to make a move towards the front door.
â
âYou know where the door is⌠Canât say you know where anything else is in here,â Augustine muttered under his breath, maintaining a calm air as he noticed the otherâs feathers get ruffled. He barely had caught Jacobâs latter comment before the human disappeared, leaving the witch with even more questions than heâd had before he appeared. Had that gone⌠well? Why had Jacob come by? He knew where Faust lived, which was a point towards the argument he hadnât lied to him about knowing Faust priorâŚ. but Augustine had pissed off more than one loved over his lifespan, and something still didnât sit right with the whole thing. He couldnât even find a number in Faustâs phone for someone named Jacob, or even a pet name. The otherâs skittish nature instead made him believe he was onto something mentioning Rei⌠And so it seemed he had a few calls to make.
â
Eiji held in a huff of irritation and decided that for once he should just keep his big mouth shut. His hand made contact with the handle and the door quickly swung open and shut behind him. He released a heavy breath once he was outside, but the weight that pressed down on him hadnât left. âFuck!â He cursed out loud to himself when he was further away from the apartment, rubbing his hands over his face for a brief second. He didnât know what he was going to do now, all he knew was that he needed to try and find out whatever was being hidden before âFaustâ did, unless he wanted to end up in prison and *dead*, faster than expected.
[Text] Looking for a young kid named Rei. Brunette. Athletic build. Couldnât be much older than 20 if I had to guess. I will be honest though- Iâm working mostly off of that fever dream in February. Any chance you know someone by that name and description? He was twins in it with another kid named Jacob. I think Iâve met him before but my memory is shaky on shit that happened in the weeks prior to dying.

"You know well enough how high my tolerance for alcohol can get," Ayumu grinned sharply. All that dancing they did meant that their body metabolised quickly, and that included these drinks. "Yeah? That's great news. Is this your promise to me that there will be no reshoots?" they asked with a cheeky wink. "I've had more than enough with you and your lot. We could afford to take a break from each other for a few months at least."
"Trust me- I plan on it," Augustine volunteered, turning away only to order several more drinks from the bartender before turning back to Ayumu. "Already talked with Mab about going somewhere warm for a few months and forgetting all about the lot of you," he joked. "She's also who's paying your bar tab tonight, fyi. Unfortunately for her, she doesn't know about your tolerance."
Augustineâs gaze flickered towards the vampire before returning to the woman before him. He didnât recognize her, but her familiarity with him immediately set off alarm bells. Did she know Faust? She obviously wasnât some random woman flirting, or else she had a very odd way of approaching someone. As for an option C, if it wasnât either of the former ideas, wellâ the alarm bells were arguably just as warranted. The witch had by all accounts looked uninviting, and so for someone to approach him so forwardly made him nervous as to their intentions.
âNo,â He answered back with easeâ at very least his distaste for vampires making the response easy enough. He gave the woman a wary look then, asking, âSure, but donât take this the wrong way- are you trying to pick me up?â Did he think she was? No. But it seemed like an easy enough assumption to make that would hopefully at least provide answers of a sort, or so he hoped.
Jo blinked at him once, like she hadnât expected the question. Then she made a face. A small, sharp but fabricated wince pulling at her mouth as she glanced down at her beer, turning the bottle a fraction against the table. Of all the ways he couldâve taken that, this wasnât the worstâbut it wasnât the right one either. Still, the chance to make a guy as large and as beefy as him even slightly uncomfortable? That was too tempting an opportunity to pass up.
âTrying?â she echoed, tipping the beer back for another swallow before setting it down with a soft clink, âOuch. Guess I'm not.â She leaned back slightly in the booth, one arm slung along the cracked vinyl, giving him a longer look now. âCouldâve just said no,â she added quieter, gaze dropping to the rings of condensation on the table as she let the awkwardness hang there for a second longer. Just enough to see what heâd do with it.
ââŚbut no,â she added finally, tone flattening just a touch as her eyes flicked back to his. âNot really.â Her fingers tapped once against the neck of her bottle before she nudged it aside, leaning in just a fraction and lowering her voice. "Youâre just the only one in here who seems to have enough brains to be uncomfortable with that,â she said, giving a slight tilt of her head toward the other table. "And I'm not in the mood to surround myself with idiots tonight. This wolf wild heart was not made to surrender."
Augustineâs eyebrows rose up in comprehension and he gave a nod. He had never been subtle about the looks he gave most vampires. The idea the woman before him had been watching that made him take caution, but he played it off with a nod of his head as one had played with his glass. âAh. Yeah, canât say Iâm much of a fan,â he acknowledged aloud. âSorry âbout the comment, but figured I didnât wanna waste your time on the off chance you were,â he added, giving a wry grin as he continued, âAlthough also finding most their sort unsettling ironically is certainly one way to grab my attention.â
