I can't find the meme of the...I think it's existential crisis but one is an emo type of picture and the other is an 80's radical preteen sort of thing but like. that seems to be them.

And mostly because Tony's literally running away from and blocking out the trauma. and this is a mentalist, the actual powers variety. He can make people remember or forget things at will. He's doing that to himself and going hedonistic.

like they're both two extremes but

he's mentioned this incident a lot in his different events. He's an honorary member of the pack, he's got were friends "despite everything", he has alpha cologne, among other things. Tony's an ex government agent. he's pretty and was used to seduce people the government needed info from. He was put undercover in a mermaid commercial.

for all intents and purposes, he was/is their Sephiroth as far as we know. Or their Genesis. The only thing in Tony's favor is as far as we know, he got to have a normal childhood. He mentions he lived in a cul de sac, his parents were strict (fair-he snuck out one night and caught a burglar red handed hoping to meet a vampire) but kind. He had pets, he had friends. He just ended up in the government. But I do feel he's this extremely powerful character who faced a mind breaking trauma and instead of going crazy and taking it out on everyone else he went crazy and became borderline suicidal (and can only die by a meteor)

Sephiroth is faced with an undeniable truth, feels lied to, understandably, and goes super villain in his midlife crisis. Tony Keller becomes a paranormal investigator monster fucker absolutely daring destiny to hold true to that prophesy about his death.

I did do some google searches on Tony, too, so please forgive any inaccuracies.

Sephiroth learns his existence is a lie, his "mother" is an alien calamity, and he decides the only logical next step is to burn Nibelheim to the ground, summon a meteor, and become a god. It’s grand, it’s theatrical, and it’s deeply externalized. And he looks great framed in fire.

Tony, on the other hand, is a literal psychic mentalist who looked at his massive, government-inflicted trauma and went, "Ah, yes. Time to selectively wipe my own memory, wear alpha werewolf cologne, film a mermaid commercial, and aggressively flirt with the paranormal."

Where Sephiroth channels his despair into becoming the harbinger of doom, Tony channels his into becoming a chaotic, hedonistic cryptid-chaser. It's the ultimate contrast. One wants to be the meteor, and the other is actively daring a meteor to find him.

Lord, you made an amazing point about their childhoods. Sephiroth was raised as a weapon in a sterile lab, completely devoid of genuine human connection, which is why his break was so absolute. There was no foundation to catch him. Everyone left him at one point or another in his life, starting with Professor Gast when Sephiroth was still in his developmental age.

Tony, despite the government exploitation and the seduction tactics, had that grounded cul-de-sac childhood. He had strict but kind parents, pets, and the innocent childhood dream of meeting a vampire. If I read his bio and your analysis on him right, that little kernel of normalcy is probably the only thing keeping him from going full villain. Instead of wanting to destroy the world, he just wants to lose himself in it. He didn’t lose his humanity. He just turned it into a high-stakes circus.

So, the meetup? I imagine would go something like this.

Sephiroth: (Floating majestically, monologue-ing about destiny, the corruption of the Planet, and the inevitable descent of the meteor)

Tony: (Squinting, adjusting his collar) "Wait, did you say. . .meteor? Like, specifically a space rock? Because a fortune teller told me that's the only way I can die. Are you my destiny, or are you just trying to flirt with me?"

Sephiroth: (Visibly derailed, wing twitches) ". . .What?"

From what I read, Tony is the ultimate counter to a melodramatic villain. You cannot intimidate a man who is actively, gleefully suicidal and treats terrifying paranormal entities like a Tinder queue. Sephiroth thrives on fear and despair. Tony would probably try to analyze Sephiroth's mommy issues, offer him some "alpha cologne" to mask the scent of burning Mako, and ask if Jenova counts as a cryptid.

Sephiroth would either find Tony so bafflingly beneath his notice that he'd walk away, or he’d be so utterly annoyed by Tony's complete lack of self-preservation that he'd try to impale him. Because if we are honest, Sephiroth really likes to impale people. But only for Tony to psychic-mind-wipe the last five minutes of the conversation just to do it all over again.

You're basically right on the money with Tony, though not only does being a Mentalist allow him to play with memory, it also compells people to tell him things. He rocks up to a situation and unless something's interfering, everyone just treats him like he's their best friend off the jump. He can also cause "Interrogations" which...in game play the person sits at a desk made of shadows next to a flickering light. Apparently Tony's actually literally inducing this space when he asks questions, and it makes people more likely to tell him the truth. If they're strongly willed enough they can resist answering honestly but they will get extremely disoriented. He's gotten annoyed enough with people to pull them straight into interrogation state as he calls it, without much warning. ("that's it, I'm pulling you into interrogation. Now" as a direct quote) Tony's also extremely compassionate, and has shown mercy when he didn't need to, because of that compassion. He's been extremely kind, once they calmed down, to Medusa, a ghost-witch (and victim of sexual assault-that was how she died), and The Herald of Death-because the demon was on parole, acting very polite and actively flirting I suspect lol. Among a couple others. Other than that, yes, you got him lol

Sephiroth absolutely had the right to go off the rails because his entire identity was a lie, and go big or go home seems to have been part of his training so I am not even slightly surprised his logical next step conclusion was "become god"

their breaks are on the opposite sides of the extreme. Sephiroth is taking his pain and inflicting it on the external causes. Tony's taken his pain and directed it inward, self inflicting his worst traits. And I think it has to do with both their childhoods and their powers. Tony's emeshes him in society. Wherever he goes, he is a friend even if he himself doesn't have a lot of friends. He gets pulled into caring. Sephiroth's it seems kept him a little apart from everyone else. On top of his upbringing, the genova cells caused a slight enough difference he's a little bit of an outsider. Making it easy to lose himself in being different from them and cutting them off. While Tony decided to lose himself in humanity.

I absolutely agree on your assessment. That kernel is the only thing that keeps him from going villain mode. One of his events he went 2-3 days without sleep, and we watched him regress over the course of the event. He went from usual jovial, though a bit sleepy, to quieter, serious, far more explicitely self sacrificing, more willing to take verbal abuse--and pulling a gun on someone when they were holding people hostage, which is very much out of character for him when he's not tired. In essence, he seemed to have fallen back on training. The only thing keeping him grounded there, was his friend Leonard Gomez, who's known him since he was an agent of Department 17. If Leonard hadn't been there, things probably would have gotten very bad very fast. And this situation was already bad.

Oh wow I love that, because you're right. He didn't lose his humanity, he turned it into a high stakes circus and he's quite happily the clown in it.

I agree with this yes, and would also add;

Restarts the encounter once Tony realizes Sephiroth is a hurt person hurting people, a la ghost witch, switches tactics. In order to keep Sephiroth's attention long enough to try and talk him down or pacify into, for the time being, retreat, pulls him into interrogation mode

he does agree Sephiroth's crashout is absolutely justified, and lays out pieces of evidence he may have picked up while mosying around. probably with a specific through line in mind.

whether or not Sephiroth can break the interrogation prematurely is probably up to whether or not this took him by surprise

Tony might actually offer working for Sephiroth to find more clarification or get the actual people who wronged him to justice, if he agrees to knock off the monologues for ten minues because it's a real downer, my friend honestly.

probably release (if Sephiroth hasn't broken free by now) him from interrogation state and if Sephiroth still isn't calm erase the convo again to try again, or retreat for the time being

if sephiroth decides to pursue and stab him, again, go "Well see this is why I think I can talk you down. If you're going to kill me you'd kill me. I already told you how"

at some point he probably is going to bring up his friend the Herald of Death

barring Sephiroth causing Tony to completely lose his temper, but that's very hard for anyone to manage

Tony offered to arrest the goddess Athena on behalf of Medusa. He would do whatever he could to, if not save Sephiroth, neutralize him in as non violent way as he can think of. It just seems to be Tony’s general thing lol.

He’ll see if he can flirt with Jenova, call Sephiroth his destiny, make a joke about being impaled but when it counts he is offering compassion and a non violent way out, because that’s what Tony does. It’s how he was raised. He’d stop flirting with him or Genova, and offer an out. He’s smart enough to know Sephiroth is a threat, but will try reasoning first. Generally that gun is the very last resort he has rarely ever had to use.
