“So, who wants to go first?”

Surprisingly, the dent on the table you’ve been staring at since you sat down has not moved. 

Unsurprisingly, neither of you feel an overwhelming urge to start talking. 

Therapy’s never really been your thing. You’re not even really supposed to be here; you did your mandatory sessions. That being said, you really don’t want to piss off the Counsel any more than you already have. Something about being a smartass in the stand and generally just causing them a lot of bother.

The woman across from you looks at you with an intentionally blank expression on her face; one developed over years of professional practice. 

You sigh quietly. 

“Right, well, I don’t even know why I’m here, so…”

She raises her eyebrows slightly, turning her gaze to the man to your right. 

“You didn’t tell her?”

You hear him sigh beside you, feeling your own patience seeping out of you like an hourglass. 

“I told you, we don’t talk.”

This was a bad idea. A monumentally bad idea.  

Bucky closed his apartment door behind him, pausing for a moment at the top of brownstone steps as a chill of autumn air swept by. Brittle to the touch, cool on his skin, it nestled into his spine and ached deep in his bones— in ones that had been long abandoned, too. The sun reflected against the shine of the pavement from last night’s rainfall, forcing Bucky to squint his eyes.  

Was it always so bright outside? Maybe it was the fact that he hadn’t left his apartment for nearly a week before Sam threatened to turn him over to Steve that he’d forgotten how unpleasant the streets of New York could be. Loud. Cold. Chaotic.

He stepped onto the sidewalk, slipping out of the path of a jogger who nearly ran him over and had the gull to flip him the bird. Bucky groaned, curling his right hand into a fist and digging it deep into his pocket as he tried to calm the sudden racing in his chest. The free arm of his army jacket swung down by his left side, empty.  

Not even a few steps outside the sanctuary of closed curtains, warm bedsheets, and the unattended static of a decade old television, and Bucky was already regretting ever knowing Sam Wilson.

Bucky Barnes, for all intents and purposes, is edgy. 

His SHIELD salary is definitely enough to afford him a simple beanie, gloves even if he’s that eager. His long hair, though a spectacle in itself, isn’t as good at keeping away the cold as he claims it to be. 

It’s a personal choice, a fashion statement even, to be roaming the streets in a long flimsy t-shirt that does nothing to accentuate his broad shoulders, and tactical pants that look a little too comfortable. 

You stared at the duffel bag full of money, trying your best not to have a panic attack. You thought your bag felt heavier than usual when you grabbed it off the luggage carousel, but you had just gotten off a fourteen hour flight. You were too tired to care about anything besides getting home and getting into a hot shower. But now you wished you paid attention to the weight because this definitely wasn’t your bag. 

A harsh knock at your door made you jump out of your skin. You had a feeling whoever was on the other side was the owner of this bag, and they probably weren’t too happy to find out you accidentally stole from them. You could insist it was all an accident, but would they believe you? You hoped so. The last thing you wanted was to be murdered before dinner. You already had a nice pot of chili cooking. 

You took a deep breath and opened the door. Two blue eyes met yours, and you tried to smile to hide the fear running down your spine. 

“I believe you have something of mine, sweetheart,” he murmured. 

It was a dumb move, but you stepped to the side and gestured for him to come inside. If he was going to kill you - because anyone with that amount of money was definitely shady - you didn’t want blood to get on poor Mrs. Dunberry’s door mat. 

You closed the door and let out a shaky breath as you turned towards him. “I swear, it was an accident. I had just gotten off a flight from Rome and-”

“What was in Rome?” 

“I- what?” 

He laughed, practically to himself. “I asked what was in Rome that brought you there.” 

“I’m a journalist. My editor sent me there to do a review on the local cuisine for our food edition.” You cleared your throat. “Is this the part where you kill me? Because I really didn’t mean to steal from you, sir.” 

“James. You can call me James.” He smiled over at you. It was the kind of smile that made your knees weak despite thinking he was a dangerous man. “And no, I’m not going to kill you. But you do intrigue me. I think this accident could make a difference for the both of us.”

Tension lies thick over the compound. It seeps through the walls, and down gray corridors. Screams and anger echo against the concrete floors, past sleek furniture, and empty bedrooms.

No one mentions it.

They see the pain. They see the dark circles beneath his eyes. They see the slump of his shoulders. They see the tremble in his hand. They see the his chapped lips, bitten until raw and nearly bruised.

But no one says anything, because there’s nothing to say. Bucky Barnes does not let them say anything. He doesn’t want their sympathy. He doesn’t want their words. He doesn’t want their soft touch lest it shatter his fragile heart.

All the walls he has, all his defenses, come crashing down with one look, from his girl, from Y/N. Her gaze lands on him as soon as he shuffles from his room to the kitchen. “Y/N-,” he mutters, a warning in his voice.

Every night for the past week you go out to the quarter deck and listen as James tells you more about the constellations and navigation. You actually think you’re picking up a thing or two, and you can’t help but preen every time James looks at you proudly.

You’re far from any sailor or pirate, but you were learning (the fact you would even consider yourself a pirate is bizarre, thinking back to a month ago when you almost ended up on the wrong side of Captain Barnes’ temper).

You’d anchored off Tortuga earlier that afternoon, but James hasn’t made any plans for a shore party to leave until the morning, so you were safe for one more night. Just the one, and then you’d be gone. The idea of freedom that called to you so much only weeks ago, is now something you dread. You want to stay on board the ship. You want to travel and learn more.

James said they came back to Tortuga regularly, apparently, he had family here, but it had taken you a month to get here and the idea of spending a month without seeing him at all was enough to send you into a mood.

Your heart pounds in your chest as the screams and roars from outside reach your ears. The clang of metal on metal, a few loud cracks of gunfire, all of the chaos is terrifying. You knew this was a possibility, but still.

You’ve climbed inside the bottom of the wardrobe in the captains quarters like you’d been told to do, and you squeeze your eyes shut for what feels like hours. Most of the fighting seems to have died down and you pray pray pray that your side was victorious. Thudding footsteps are audible all over the deck and above you on the quarter-deck, and when the door to the captain’s cabin is shoved open you suppress a squeal.

“Can’t believe the Captain’s not gonna take this one for parts!” A gruff voice says, receiving only a grunt in reply.

“Jus’ gotta loot it to shit and–” This time you do squeal, light suddenly beaming down on you and you stare up at two unfamiliar men, one with dark skin and the other with pale white skin.

“Oh, shit, Rogers!” The dark-skinned man hits the pale man in the arm, panic across his face.

The three of you stare at one another for a moment until your instincts kick in. No way would you let them touch you, or anything else! You leap at them, and they jump back slightly shocked.
