societal roles for age are a massive can of worms that hasn't truly been analyzed to the extent it should in theory. But adulthood is such an arbitrary concept. Like obviously the idea that there is a distinct age line you can draw that firmly separates everyone who is mature enough to be adult from everyone who is still a child is arbitrary, but even the root concept of maturity is bullshit! like if asked to define "maturity", people think about things like peaceableness, cooperation, ability to take losses in stride... but none of these things really correlate directly with age - there are very kind and caring and emotionally intelligent children, and there are adults that are none of these things. and associating being nice to others with maturity ignores the fact that young children are often quite nice and friendly, and learn to be assholes from observing the "mature" adults, since that is what we prioritize as the way a person should develop! ability to take care of oneself is another common use case, but that's so arbitrary when there are plenty of 12 year olds who can cook and sew and plenty of 40 year olds who can't even begin to do any of those things.
