Livor mortis (livor meaning “bluish color” & mortis “of death”), postmortem lividity, hypostasis or suggillation, is one of the signs of death. Livor mortis is a settling of the blood in the lower portion (in most cases) of the body. This causes a purplish red discoloration of the skin. When the heart stops functioning & is no longer agitating the blood, heavy red blood cells sink through the serum (the clear stuff we know as plasma) by action of gravity.

Livor mortis starts 20 minutes to 3 hrs after death & is congealed in the capillaries in 4 - 5 hrs. Maximum lividity occurs within 6 - 12 hrs. The blood pools into the interstitial tissues (the spaces between the cells) of the body. The intensity of the color depends upon the amount of reduced hemoglobin in the blood.
