I was just watching a video on facebook that featured Joni Mitchell singing and playing guitar. Anyone who knows Joni Mitchell knows that she is a prolific songwriter whose lyrics stand out as something special. She was a true poet in her day that put countless words into song. In this video she shared the stage with Bob Dylan another legend when it comes to lyrics and songwriting.
So the question I want to ask is what do they have in common astrologically. We know that Mercury is the god of communication so we would need to find Mercury prominently placed in their charts or heavily aspected. Remember Mercury rules Gemini so let's look for some clues there as well.
The first chart up is Joni's. Her Sun sign is conjunct Mercury within one degree. The Sun sign defines your character and how you want to be known in the world. As an example If the Sun is aspecting Jupiter you would have strong sense of self or 'big ego'.because anything that touches Jupiter grows bigger If the Sun is aspecting Saturn you may have a smaller sense of self or a humble sense of self. If the Sun is aspecting the moon you are an emotional person.... and you figured it out by now... If the Sun is conjunct Mercury you are a good communicator, writer, talker, even musician...remember the mythology of Hermes who represents Mercury in astrology played the lyre.
Now let's move on to Bob Dylan. Let's look for a strong Mercury aspect in his chart.
Dylan has 3 planets in Gemini and Mercury squaring Neptune. He has more Mercury dominance than Joni Mitchell. His aspect of Mercury square Neptune is almost exact. This is the classic aspect of a poet. He uses his words, Mercury, to create an out of body experience, Neptune. Bob Dylan also has two other planets in gemini conjunct Jupiter. His whole being is about words and poetry and music.
So even though both Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan are great song writers and performers they have different Mercury aspects to describe how they achieve that goal.
Actually, is it not really a goal... it is effortless for them. It is who they are. Joni Mitchell is just filled with words where as Bob Dylan has words appear to him through the collective. For Joni she just likes to talk and express herself. For Bob, he is blessed with having a direct connection to the collective unconscious of the world and can express it with his music. That is why it resonates with so many people of his generation.
