Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library
Developer: ArtRising
Gameplay Genre: Puzzle Story Genre: N/A Story/Gameplay Ratio: 0.5:1
Hours played: 5.3 Finished: Yes Achievements: 75%
Gameplay Ideas: 8/10 | A fun and interesting concept that had me interested from the moment I first saw it. Execution: 7/10 | I do wish it was longer and had a bit more variation in the books (having some single-volume works, for example), but overall the gameplay is fairly good. The execution of the spell system could use some work, as there are two spells that are far, far better than the others but cost the same amount of points.
Visuals Ideas: 5/10 | Basic medieval fantasy style. Not much space to work with, and not much work is done. Execution: 7/10 | That said, it's a well done basic medieval fantasy style. The visuals serve the gameplay rather well, and shelves are color-coded for easier sorting.
Cohesiveness: 10/10 | It's 5 hours long- I'd be stunned if it wasn't cohesive. Personal Favor: 7/10 | I liked it, but there's not much substance.
OVERALL RATING: 7/10
I think, if you ignore the fact it could be a microsexism, jolyne being super nervous and unwilling to talk directly about her body and stuff (nervousness about admitting to masturbating/being so embarrassed about being seen, and then not wanting to say she has to pee) is an interesting character trait especially with someone so emotionally strong
(I am on episode 13 rn so we will see how/if it develops)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind (Anime)
Studio: David Productions
Mangaka: Hirohiko Araki
Genre: Shonen Setting: Italy, 2001 Mood: Intense, high-energy
Favorite episode: 25 - Spice Girl Why: Notorious B.I.G. and Spice Girl are easily the best two episodes in the part, and a gleaming beacon of excellent character writing in the midst of some genuinely abysmal storytelling. Trish is done so excellently, it makes it even more sad that Giornio is so boring.
Least favorite episode: 22 - The "G" in Guts Why: So, so bad at expressing any amount of team dynamic or proof that our main cast actually like each other or know anything at all about the people who theoretically should be their friends.
Plot: 4/10 | We're never given enough reason to care about these people to make the actual plot feel engaging. The two main themes of this part (perseverance and destiny) are contradictory, and the one they choose to focus on in the ending is the worse of the two. People: 3/10 | The only thing keeping this from being a 2 is how well Bruno, Narancia, and Mista are written in a few short moments. For the vast majority of the part, instead of being able to properly analyze the characters through their behavior and dialogue or having their stories revealed through real interaction, we're shown a bunch of disconnected flashbacks, and then those events don't seem to affect them in the present day much at all. It's frustrating, especially having seen how good Araki's characters can be in the last part. Personality: 7/10 | I'm disappointed. Some of the fights and Stand abilities are kind of cool, but a lot of them don't end up enough to counter the lack of real character writing- especially with Giornio. Presentation: 9/10 | The only thing this part does consistently well is visual design, and on that point, it does incredibly.
Personal Favor: 3/10 | The fact this follows part 4 and fails at everything it did so well makes its failures even more disappointing.
OVERALL RATING: 5/10

so I was confused about the lire usage in jjba part 5 because 2001 seems a bit late to not be using euros
and as I expected, araki didn't know about that at the time
but also, by some stroke of luck, the italian lira...
...was still legal tender until the very next year after golden wind takes place
man I thought this was funny at first but like. after such a banger it feels like a pretty sharp drop. idk I'm on e12 rn so maybe it improves but
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable (Anime)
Studio: David Productions
Mangaka: Hirohiko Araki
Genre: Shonen Setting: Morioh, Japan Mood: Ominous but hopeful
Favorite episode: 38 - Crazy D (Diamond) is Unbreakable, Part 2 Why: This episode lets every character shine and shows the relationships they've formed over the course of the part very well.
Least favorite episode: 20 - Yukako Yamagishi Dreams of Cinderella Why: Kind of boring, and doesn't really do that much for the characters involved. Feels like it could have been a B-plot run through other episodes.
Plot: 9/10 | Fascinating and very compelling, keeping things feeling just slightly unsettled until the main antagonist is actually revealed. People: 10/10 | Some of the best-written characters I've ever seen, and really takes advantage of the narrative goldmine that Stands are. Personality: 10/10 | Absolutely brimming with emotion and character, allowing every single idea to shine through so brightly. Presentation: 10/10 | Genuinely stunning visuals, especially the character design. As you can expect from JJBA.
Personal Favor: 9/10 | Banger after banger in this one.

There Is No Ship (Album)
Artist: Rose Betts
Genre: Folky pop Mood: Wistful
Favorite song: There Is No Ship Why: There's a reason it's the title track. The album in a nutshell.
Least favorite song: I Am An Island Why: Everything it has to offer is done better two songs later in "There Is No Ship."
Track ratings: Six: 10/10 | A fantastic introduction to the album, introducing a lot of the aural themes and ideas she uses throughout it and establishing the personality of it as a whole very well. Strong lyrics and beautiful instrumentals, as with the rest of this album and Betts' work in general. Take This Body Home: 10/10 | Has a particularly wistful air to it that I quite like. Almost feels to me like a song that would play in the moment after a story's "darkest hour," when the characters are picking themselves back up to continue on. Running: 9/10 | I find myself singing this one often, and it hits that chord of tired determination skillfully. Just as well-made as the first two, just with slightly less emotional impact. Alderidge Creek: 9/10 | The most folky of this album's songs. It makes me think of the long list of Celtic folk songs I grew up hearing. Excellently done piece, with a lot of drama- it almost feels torch-y in places. Save Me a Seat: 10/10 | When someone like me, who has zero attachment to mortality or aging whatsoever, can feel the emotional impact of a song entirely about that, you know you have a good song on your hands. The progression of the piano and drums in this song as an echo of the hope and determination in the lyrics is an especially good touch. Doodles: 8/10 | The only reason this isn't a 9 is it feels just a touch out of place among the other, much more folky songs on this album- as a single, it holds its own quite well. Much more danceable and high-energy than the others, but it works, in a sort of "c'est la vie" way. Come Away: 10/10 | One of my favorite songs maybe ever- extremely good, and plays with this album's themes of memory well. I'm a huge fan of the way the drums in the background reflect the increasing intensity throughout the song. You Never Looked Back: 8/10 | In the same way as "Doodles," the rhythm and cadence of this song feels a bit out of place among the others, but that doesn't take away from its strength individually. Very fun, and I especially love the way the vocals and instrumentals play with each other in this one. I Am An Island: 7/10 | Maybe if this album didn't include its title track, I'd end up rating this track higher, but for all of the things this song does well, "There Is No Ship" does them better. Still, a very competent song, if not as thematically strong as the others on this album. It does have a very good rhythm, though. My Funeral Song: 8/10 | Could make better use of the very good instrumentals that the rest of this album shows off, but the a capella approach does add something more personal and hypothetical to it. I'd have to listen to an instrument-ed version to really make a judgement on that. It's excellent for what it is, though. There Is No Ship: 10/10 | Absolute banger. Makes wonderful use of the lyrical, instrumental, and overall musical skill on display in the rest of this album. Genuinely no notes.
Lyricism: 10/10 | Absolutely phenomenal. Has the kind of slight vagueness that folk loves to use, while keeping the springy kind of catchiness of pop. Instrumentals: 9/10 | Genuinely gorgeous, some of the best I've heard outside of explicitly instrumental music. On par with some of the best I've heard in explicitly instrumental music, actually. Flow: 9/10 | Songs blend well into each other, and they all orbit a central theme that brings the whole album together nicely as an item. Personality: 8/10 | It's another album about being sad, but it's a very strong one. I'm usually the first to complain about yet another breakup album, so that should tell you something about this album's unique character.
Personal Favor: 10/10 | I absolutely adore this album. Fills my brain with soup. In a good way.
OVERALL RATING: 9/10
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders (Anime)
Studio: David Productions
Mangaka: Hirohiko Araki
Genre: Shonen
Setting: South Asia & Middle East
Mood: Lighthearted action
Favorite episode: 35 - D'Arby the Gambler, Part 2
Why: I LOVE ACE ATTORNEY!!!!!!
Least favorite episode: 32 - Set's Alessi, Part 1
Why: A lot of these episodes get boring, or poorly written, or just aren't funny or cool, but only Alessi actually makes me uncomfortable.
Plot: 7/10 | Too much of this part is spent doing very little actual development of either the characters or the plot, which is a shame, because when it's good, it's pretty dang good.
People: 8/10 | Solid characters, and the majority of them are portrayed very well throughout.
Personality: 10/10 | It's JJBA. How could I not give it a 10? Look at it!
Presentation: 9/10 | Again, JJBA. Phenomenal art style. This would be a 10, but Iggy is kind of horrifying.
Personal Favor: 6/10 | I loved some sections of this part, and hated others. Overall, I think it could totally have been done with just the 22 major arcana, but it's not bad at all.

Kubo and the Two Strings
Director: Travis Knight
Screenwriters: Marc Haimes, Chris Butler
Genre: Samurai Setting: Feudal Japan Mood: Lighthearted, action-adventurey
Plot Commentary: 9/10 | Interesting and unique ideas about family and its role, sins of the father, breaking free, and kindness. Characters: 10/10 | Compelling, distinct characters with phenomenally well-done interactions and genuinely fantastic dynamics. Coherence: 10/10 | Consistent, coherent, and thematically stable throughout the whole film.
People Acting: 10/10 | Wonderfully well-acted with a lot of very difficult lines delivered effortlessly. Casting: 10/10 | Each voice suits the characters perfectly, playing into the cartoonish style just enough without removing the humanity of them. Charisma: 10/10 | The charisma of the voice actors shines through and amplifies each and every character.
Personality Intrigue: 10/10 | Provides genuine "what are they going to do?" moments without being actually confusing, the mark of flawless suspense-building. Instantly gets you engaged with Kubo and his story, and holds your attention throughout. Catharsis: 10/10 | Finishes the story without falling away from its themes for a moment, with an incredibly satisfying conclusion. Uniqueness: 10/10 | A genuinely fresh look on the "samurai fighting for his family" idea that takes it in a new and very good direction.
Presentation Visual appeal: 10/10 | Oh my god this movie is gorgeous. The stop-motion animation style lends a sense of humanity to it, the art is just beautiful, and every single scene is incredibly well-made visually. Just a masterpiece. Storytelling: 9/10 | Wonderful storytelling cut through with humor, helping to highlight the contrast between the stakes of Kubo's journey and his own lightheartedness. Design: 9/10 | Excellent design work, each character and set feels unique and distinct (except the aunties from each other, but that's on purpose, obviously).
Personal Favor: 10/10 | Tied with The Secret of Kells (review eventually) for my favorite movie.
OVERALL RATING: 10/10
one of my favorite tropes has got to be "character who has done terrible things in the name of good and, when they realize the horror of their actions, is so broken by that fact that they see no better option but to destroy themselves"
darth vader, rorschach, there was another one I was thinking of but I can't remember
especially when other characters have already forgiven them
it's very yummy
finally getting close to finishing part 3 gang hope is real
okay yeah
Ori and the Blind Forest (Definitive Edition)
Developer: Moon Studios
Gameplay Genre: Metroidvania Story Genre: Adventure, magical Save The World Story/Gameplay Ratio: 1:2
Hours played: 13 Finished: Yes Achievements: 78%
Gameplay Ideas: 10/10 | This game knows exactly what makes a good Metroidvania. Every ability is unique and feels carefully thought out. Execution: 8/10 | Except for one issue that I'll get to in the Visuals section, there's precious little to this game that isn't excellently done. The platforming never got frustrating, but was always challenging.
Story Ideas: 8/10 | Some pretty interesting concepts here. Solid themes of family, responsibility, and kindness throughout. Execution: 6/10 | The cutscenes are okay, but choosing to do narration instead of dialogue in them makes them feel far more "tell" than "show" and distances the player from the deeply personal story.
Characters Ideas: 7/10 | Not terribly deep or complex, but then again, the game seems to accept that and isn't trying to make them seem more complicated than they are. Execution: 9/10 | Genuinely astounding character animation that really lets their personalities and emotions shine through, combined with excellent character designs that show off who these individuals are very well.
Visuals Ideas: 7/10 | The art style is pretty, but it's not particularly unique, and the visual theming of each area is relatively basic. Execution: 5/10 | It's pretty, sure, but I have several issues with the visuals of this game. For one, with the exception of the Ginso Tree, Mount Horu, and the Forlorn Ruins, none of the areas feel particularly visually distinct. Everything is washed with a vague "magical forest" idea that was probably intended to unify the visual design but, in doing so, washes out the uniqueness of each area. It all just kind of looks the same at first glance. On top of that, nearly everything in this game glows with an obnoxious bloom light that blurs the whole screen together and makes it hard to tell what anything is supposed to be, including the player character. The art itself also doesn't help, as there's practically no distinction between hazards and background foliage in some areas (Misty Woods and Sorrow Pass come to mind). The art isn't distinct enough to make up for it, so it all ends up looking like a generically pretty visual mess.
Cohesiveness: 9/10 | Unified throughout, sometimes to its detriment. Personal Favor: 6/10 | Didn't wow me. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Silksong and Mio, but it didn't stand out to me at all.
OVERALL RATING: 7/10

guys I think I'm. good at metroidvanias??
Okay this one doesn't really have a system yet (just realized I don't have a template for board/card/tabletop games, not that this really is one) but I did get to playtest for a dear friend's system so
United Yurts (2E) [SPEED REVIEW]
Creator(s): Johndolf Press
Game Feel: 8/10 | Very rewarding, and VERY fun. I feel like it could do with a few more rounds, but it's a very good sign when my only critique is that it's not long enough.
Skill Ceiling: 9/10 | It really is up to you how the game goes for your team. The amount that you can do individually and as a group is genuinely very high.
Uniqueness: 10/10 | Unlike anything I've ever even heard of—funnily enough, the closest other game I can think of is also an abnormal social deduction game made by a friend of mine, which I believe was called Small Cat Secret Octopus.
Concept: 10/10 | Phenomenal interpretation and reinvention of its setting. Genuinely inspired scenarios and storytelling.
Personal Favor: 10/10 | Biased, but still, LOVELY.
OVERALL RATING: 10/10
