The forefather of indie-hop, Sage Francis. @sagefrancissfr It’s always a great/fun/wacky day of shooting with Sage. He’s a talent and a hurricane. These were created for Anti- @antirecords First photo is us just riffing on some ideas and is suitably strange enough for Sage. The second photo was for album artwork. We shot quite a bit up to this point and Sage needed a break. He took off for a bit, saying he’d return soon. I felt I needed to keep shooting when he returned (always push for more) and found this room with the tree in the distance. It’s winter and the sun is setting fast. Then clouds started rolling in! Where is Sage? At the last minute he returned and I was so desperate to just catch something that I started shooting while he was getting dressed and fixing his clothes. As it turned out, it appears as though he is dancing, and this played in perfectly with the mystique necessary for the cover of “Human the Death Dance”. Black Thought, the American rapper and lead MC of Philadelphia’s hip-hop group The Roots. . . Most people look at a photograph and judge it by the obvious but photographers look at an image and see all of the hard work behind the scenes - the pre-production, the flights, cases of gear, the dedicated assistants and talented crew. Not to mention the post production of lab runs or digital processing and edits. Great, and even good photographs require tenacity. Photographs like the one above require showing up early, having speed and technical skills to build sets on location and to simply sit around and wait for your subject to be ready and available.
