One of the really, really frustrating things about being autistic is that you feel like you spend your life trying to reach some sort of unattainable middle-ground:
- Weâre criticised for not making enough conversation, but when we do actually really get in to a conversation we are told weâre âtoo intenseâ.
- Weâre often trained to maintain unbroken eye-contact during conversations, yet in reality too much eye-contact is called âstaringâ and makes people very, very uncomfortable.Â
- Weâre encouraged to âexpressâ ourselves more, yet our actual, genuine emotional reactions are usually deemed âinnapropiateâ or âunnescessaryâ.Â
- Weâre told to be friendly and confident when approaching new people, but are then warned that we âcome off too strongâ.
- We are told to try and make interesting conversation, but are also taught that speaking about our interests will only ever annoy other people.Â
- Weâre asked to explain our difficulties and anxieties, only to be told that these explanations âmake no senseâ or that our worries are unrealistic and invalid.Â
- Weâre expected to force ourselves in to social situations that feel overwhelming and draining yet still somehow remain friendly, good-tempered and pleasantly sociable.Â
- We are encouraged to develop good self-esteem, while at the exact same time being taught that everything about us is wrong.
I donât hate having autism - Iâve never hated having autism. But I do hate living with the never-ending pressure to attain this mythical âperfectâ level of social interaction that simply doesnât exist in my case. Â
Ditto. This is my life.

This week on the Mad in America Podcast we interview antipsychiatry scholar Bonnie Burstow and neurodiversity scholar Nick Walker.
The issue of forced treatment is a fundamental one for society, and for those who are subjected to it. While the psychiatric mainstream argues that such force is at times a medical necessity, and thus of benefit to the individual being so treated, which is a view generally accepted by society, I have had personal experience being forcibly treated, and like many others who have been so âtreated,â I experienced it as an assault on my very being, and a violation of my cognitive liberty. ...

Florida Panther
The Florida panther is an endangered population of cougar (Puma concolor) that lives in forests and swamps of southern Florida. Florida panthers are usually found in pinelands, hardwood hammocks, and mix swamp forests. This population, the only unequivocal cougar representative in the eastern United States, currently occupies 5% of its historic range. In the 1970s, there were an estimated 20 Florida panthers in the wild, although their numbers have increased to an estimated 230 by 2017. In 1982, the Florida panther was chosen as the Florida state animal.

They can be highly numerate and analytical, but only 15% of adults with autism are in full-time paid employment. So how can companies better cater for them?

from an autistic kid to allistics
please stop calling your interests that mean a lot to you your âspecial interestsâ. special interest is a term for people on the autism spectrum, not for you guys to throw around like it means nothing. having special interests means the world to so many autistic people (especially young autistics) and seeing the term used loosely by allistics is kind of infuriating.
Also, special interests are pathologised as a symptom of autism, and using the term is a reclamation by actually autistic people. In the medical community, autistics having a special interest is considered a problem, therapies are aimed at forcing autistics to give them up, and they are forbidden to speak about them â even when itâs totally normal for allistics to have driving hobbies and interests.
For allistics who have ADHD and similar disorders, âhyperfocusâ is a common term.
If youâre neurotypical, just say âhobbyâ or âpassionâ or âfandomâ or something like that.
Based off of something an anonymous friend of @candidlyautistic wrote about being autistic in a society made for allistics.
I relate really heavily to the story and decided to write something based off of a mixture of my own experiences and what was written in the story.
My guess is many people, not just autistics can relate to what is being said above. I hope you all enjoy this!!!
Oh my gosh this is so amazing! My friend is going to just LOVE this!

Color Blindness
Colour-blindness is not exactly something high on an artistâs list of things to consider, so you might be wondering why itâs important at all. The simple answer is, your audience. Color blindness, colour vision deficiency, or CVD, affects approximately 1 in 12 dmab (8%), and 1 in 200 dfab people in the world.Â
While you as an artist may have Trichromacy (full color vision), if you end up with a color blind client, or even if you are just designing something for a public audience, knowing what color blindness is and how it affects the way other people view your work is important.
Four Types Of Color Blindness
Protanopia is a severe type of color vision deficiency caused by the complete absence of red retinal photoreceptors.
Those affected have difficulties distinguishing between blue and green colors and also between red and green colors. It is a form of dichromatism in which the subject can only perceive light wavelengths from 400 to 650 nm, instead of the usual 700 nm.
Pure reds cannot be seen, instead appearing black; purple colors cannot be distinguished from blues; more orange-tinted reds may appear as very dim yellows, and all orangeâyellowâgreen shades of too long a wavelength to stimulate the blue receptors appear as a similar yellow hue.
Protanopes are more likely to confuse:
Black with many shades of red
Dark brown with dark green, dark orange and dark red
Some blues with some reds, purples and dark pinks
Mid-greens with some oranges
Deuteranopia is a type of color vision deficiency where the green photoreceptors are absent.
It affects hue discrimination in the same way as protanopia, but without the dimming effect.
Deuteranopes are more likely to confuse:
Mid-reds with mid-greens
Blue-greens with grey and mid-pinks
Bright greens with yellows
Pale pinks with light grey
Mid-reds with mid-brown
Light blues with lilac
Lacking the short-wavelength cones, those affected see short-wavelength colors (blue, indigo and a spectral violet) greenish and drastically dimmed, some of these colors even appear as black.
Yellow is indistinguishable from pink, and purple colors are perceived as various shades of red.
Tritanopes are more likely to confuse:
Light blues with greys
Dark purples with black
Mid-greens with blues
Oranges with reds
People with monochromatic vision can see no colour at all and their world consists of different shades of grey ranging from black to white, rather like only seeing the world on an old black and white television set. Achromatopsia is extremely rare, occurring only in approximately 1 person in 33,000 and its symptoms can make life very difficult. Usually someone with achromatopsia will need to wear dark glasses inside in normal light conditions.
In cerebral achromatopsia, a person cannot perceive colors even though the eyes are capable of distinguishing them. Some sources do not consider these to be true color blindness, because the failure is of perception, not of vision. They are forms of visual agnosia.
