So, is anyone else excited for the Force Awakens? I’m super excited about the Force Awakens.

As anyone who knows me knows, I hame a HUGE fan of Imperial tech and aesthetic. (Also, Stormtroopers with morals. Read Allegiance, you’ll thank me.) This is my new mug.

But I’m not here to talk about drinking out of the helmet of a stormtrooper.

I’m here to talk about TIE fighters. You know, these things:

So, that’s an Imperial TIE Fighter for those who don’t know. Sexy little ship, also a death trap, but I forgive it’s faults for being so goddamn amazing.

See the black things? Those are solar panels. Part of the energy requirements for TIEs in universe comes from those. Mostly cockpit functions, which are insanely minimal anyway. (They don’t have life support. You wear a spacesuit to fly these things. Oh, and they don’t have artificial gravity, either, so you feel all the centripetal force. TIE pilots are hard core.)

Check these crazy things out! Much darker hull metal, probably painted, but maybe a different metal?

But check those solar panels. They’re fucking WHITE. Not the most efficient solar panels, right?

Until I remember this:

Clear solar panels are a thing that exist now.

I think this picture is actually a film applied to glass, but photovoltaic glass is also a thing. Now, one of the downfalls to clear solar panels is they have reduced efficiency as compared to traditional panels, because they’re explicitly letting a bunch of the light through.

But this is sci fi, why can’t our clear solar panels be more efficient? Maybe not perfectly efficient, but better. So why white?
