Showcase
Now that our application and installation concepts have been finished its time for the showcase.
For our showcase, we decided to display both the application and the installation. On our wall, we decided to provide a blown up version of the application as well as all the app concepts and a small background behind the installation.
From the showcase, we got a lot of useful feedback. We did notice straight away that everyone who came to our stall really enjoyed our idea and concepts with a lot of past students saying they wish they had this when they were at AUT. There was also a lot of support from current students and parents to continue with the project and to incorporate it into AUT
More Playtesting
We did some more playtesting using our concepts to get some feedback from students that hang around AUT and took their feedback and incorporated what they said into our final designs.Â
What most of the students we playtested on enjoyed was how good the application looks and how the installation interactivity works. What was a bit of a struggle we found was the colors used, especially on the installation with the purple background.
From the playtesting, we produced our final looks and layouts for both the application and installation. The application has nice big and obvious buttons with pictures to accompany the words, this makes the application more visually pleasing. A blurred background was added to make it more exciting and to stand out more. The interface is clear and easy to use which AUT students really enjoyed. The main issue people had with the installation was the color, especially the purple background, we decided to change it to grey which allows the colorful bubbles to stand out more. One issue that was requested to be fixed with the installation was to make the zooming one tap opposed to two but we were unable to achieve this.
PlayTest Results
After doing our playtesting we created some new application design styles and concepts. This is to see which style works best with our idea. This also allowed us to to take the best from all of the concepts and incorporate them into one.
Survey
After creating the app, we decided to go and test both the app and the installation slide on some other students in the UX/UI department, as well as design and graphic design students.
When we tested on the UX/UI students they loved the idea of the installation and they liked how the installation works. However, they liked the aesthetic and look of the app more. They also told us that although the installation is very cool and a great idea that no one else has done before, they did prefer the convenience of the app. With the colours, they suggested to make the green slightly lighter as it was a little too bright, and also find a slightly different shade of orange. They said apps are boring because they're normal but its easier and more convenient and more people are likely to use it. They suggested using them both together and try to incorporate them with each other.
We also surveyed some graphic design students. They said that there was not much need for the installation as the app is easy and convenient. The app looks really good and if they ever need to find someone to help or work with them, then the app would be their first choice. Although they said the installation was unnecessary, they thought it was cool because no one else has done that before.
From these playtests we notice that the installation, although it being very cool, is unnecessary and inconvenient, whereas the app is both convenient, easy to use, and looks really good. We might attempt to somehow incorporate the two together but if it doesn't seem to work, we may just stick with the app.

App
After we all went away and designed our versions of the app we came back and found the best one and figured out which elements worked best between all our apps.Â
This photo shows the main menu of the app. In this menu, you can select the categories you are looking for and once you have selected the category, you can then select what exactly you’re looking for and from there it provides a list of people you could contact.
We have used these colors because we surveyed some design students and they agreed that those colors work best with the categories and the overall design. These colors also compliment each other and work well together. The colors aren't straining on the eyes and they are clear and simple.
The app is very simple and easy to use, which is what people requested when we surveyed them, and the app is also very convenient.
ICT POSTER
In my poster, I used my first project, card ass, as the main inspiration. My goal in this poster is to show a bunch of cards spread out on top of a page from a notebook that has writing on it. On the cards, it shows different things I learned, used, or created. For example, it has the designs for our first card project, and on some of the other cards, it also shows pois and things to do with the Maori culture such as the Maori Flag as that was what my second project was about. The writing on the page is cut out in certain areas so viewers can try to guess what is being said and interpret what is said how they want. The middle card has my vision for a creative technologies AUT logo. It shows the silhouette of Auckland city and then reflecting it is a colorful version of it. The black silhouette represents Auckland now and the colorful silhouette which is underneath the black silhouette represents all the hidden creativity and expression in Auckland that isn’t seen. This unknown and hidden creativity is found in courses like Creative Technologies where the students can be creative in their own forms.

Prototyping part 2
We decided today that we are going to look into creating an application that could be used just within AUT. We have decided to go off on our own and create our own ideas for the apps and then come back tomorrow and grab the best aspects of them all.
A big feature we want to look at is which colors to use on the app. Colors work very well to emphasize different areas and we want to color code our app and make it easier to navigate for the user
Meeting and prototyping
We had a meeting with some project managers to potentially get funding for our project and get it implemented around the school. We showed them our product and the ideas for it and they were very interested in it and enjoyed the idea, however, they thought there were some aspects we were missing. They said it was a good idea however we needed to do some prototyping to understand our product properly. So we brainstormed and decided a community board would be great for prototyping. The community board would act the same way the application/installation would, however, it would just be a lot more simplified.
We realized this might be hard to prototype so we went around the class and got anyone who would volunteer to write their names down so we can put it on the board. We are planning to display the board in the classroom so it can be used by the students, however, we are not sure how well this will work in such a short amount of time.
We have also created a survey which we plan on sharing around the school or on social media.
Changes
After reviewing our project we decided to do an installation. We also decided that we want to focus on creating connections and collaborations in multiple areas opposed to just one. We decided we want to create a bubble diagram and project it onto a wall. When its there people can sort through the different categories to find people who they need or who share similar interests. Doing this it will create a community through collaboration and connection and it will help benefit students both in school work and for hobbies or future careers.

Survey
Today we discussed which area we wanted to go for. The main areas were music and fashion and we decided that fashion has the most potential.Â
We went to the fashion department to survey the students to see what it's like for someone in the fashion industry and how they make connections. Here we realized that they actually struggle to make connections and to find jobs to do with fashion. This is perfect for us as what we want to do is create connections and make it easier for designers to make connections and find clients.
Project 3
For this project, we were told to create our own brief after our groups had been formed.
A personal interest I wanted to do for this project wants to create collaborations and connections either through a platform or an installation. I specifically am thinking about doing this for music. Like creating connections for a singer and bands, or producers and rappers. However, I'm still open to change my idea or alter it if someone else has a similar idea.
I spoke to Ella who had a similar idea about creating connections but through the fashion industry. Jarem and Liam also really liked the ideas and we formed our group. We all had similar ideas on what we wanted to do for this project.
We discussed possible ideas and ways to accomplish our community for collaborators and decided that either a platform like a website or app, or a installation at AUT would be the best ideas.

Pois For The Revival Of Te Reo Maori
This is the Final look at our Pois. This will be presented to the class. Each Poi represents a set year in the history of New Zealand and Maori. The size of the head is determined by the size of the population at the time, the length of the rope resembles the percentage of the population that speak Te Reo Maori and the colors on the rope are determined by the different ethnic groups in New Zealand at the set times. The goal of our project is to bring awareness about how Te Reo Maori and just the Maori culture in general, is slowly fading and dying away and we as a country and population need to embrace the native culture to New Zealand so we can keep it alive and strong.
Reflective Journal
For the first BCT studio project, I joined a group that created the Card Ass project. Card Ass is the name we gave to our product because it is silly and wacky, and it is a shortened version of “Card Assistant”. Card Ass was a product aimed at, but not limited to, young creatives. The aim of the experience is to assist and inspire creativity amongst artists especially when they are stuck at creative blocks. To take part in the experience the user draws three cards, a character card, a setting card, and a wild card. The character card gives the user a character they must interpret and draw, Setting Card provides the situation or place the character must be drawn in, and finally the wild card gives the overall drawing/artwork a bit of a twist, an example is that you must draw a girlfriend for your character or your character will die in this drawing.
At the beginning of the project, I was initially in a group of 3. We decided to merge with another group of 4 to create a larger group of 7. This group of 7 then became Card Ass. We wanted to join groups because we felt that there weren’t enough ideas just amongst us 3 and thought creating a larger group could provoke more ideas and concepts. Initially, the group was looking at basing our product on creative writers and authors. We wanted to encourage more people to begin writing and we were trying to create a very enjoyable way for people to get interested in writing. However, as a group we realized that none of us were very interested in writing, so we didn’t have a lot of interest in the topic and thought it would be a better idea to look at a different topic. As a group, we were stuck and couldn’t think of any new ideas. The final week before the submission date arrived and everyone started to panic. We did an activity to brainstorm ideas and one of our members, Ella, thought it would be a good idea to keep the same idea we had for the creative writing but, aim it at artists and young creatives. The group really liked this idea and we concepted, tested, and designed our final product all in the final week.
Looking back at the process we went through, the group seemed to be doing a lot of work but the topics we were researching and looking at basing our product experience on just was interesting to us. We mistakenly spent a lot of time on something we didn’t like, instead, we should’ve come together as a group sooner and discussed what we are interested in and find if there were any mutual interests earlier on so we could spend more time on that, so we potentially could have made a better product and experience in the end. I noticed that at the beginning of the process there were a lot of ideas by members that were just shut down too quickly or weren’t considered very much at all. This is sort of disappointing to look back at as I realize the creative drawing and young creatives topic was originally brought up right at the beginning of the process and as a group, we should’ve researched it more and realized that it was a really good idea. If we did that it would’ve saved so much time and would have improved our product because we would’ve had more time to work on it. From this, personally, I learned that instead of coming up with one good idea right at the beginning and only focusing on that, we should put it to the side, research other ideas and topics to see if there is anything better or more interesting and if nothing can be found then we can come back to the original idea and focus on it from there, but since we only focused on the one idea for most of the process, we missed out on many opportunities that would’ve benefited us. As a group, we learned that we should be more open to different ideas and that we should brainstorm our ideas and interests more often.
However, also looking back at the process there are a lot of positives. When doing the testing we did it on both classmates and the public and it was great to see that our product provided the experience it was intended to as everyone enjoyed our product and praised the experience and how it triggered creativity. The group had very good chemistry as well which meant we all got along and worked well together. I think this is because we all have very similar personalities and interests which meant that we could feed off each other’s energy and ideas to produce even better ones.
My understanding of the experience and the process we went through to complete our project can be related to James Webb Young. In his book “A technique for producing ideas” he explains that people shouldn’t figure out where to look for new ideas but instead train our minds to generate new ideas naturally. I feel like that related to our group project as we spent a very large amount of time on one idea and looking for ideas online when instead we should have done what we did at the end of the project and went away and came up ideas on our own without external help and with doing that we were able to create a very good idea and project. I think it may be a good idea to investigate a different process for the next project. SmartStorming.com studied the question “what makes a good idea, good?” and according to the website, there are four specific things your idea should have to make it good. It needs to be different or an improved version of an existing idea, it needs value, it needs to be physically possible and doable, and it needs to have acceptable cost-benefit. Looking at these key ideas. Personally, I would like to follow these steps or at least consider this way of idea creation in the next project. This is because I want to test out another method of idea creation and find which versions suit me best. I also want to follow that criteria because some of the techniques we were taught during the process of our project didn’t necessarily benefit us or help us but having this criteria to look back at and follow will help give us a good basis for the project.
In the future, I would like to work with this group again as they provided a very good product but also the process was very enjoyable, and the group worked well together. However, I would like to look at other ways of researching ideas or maybe follow a different process to the one we did. Instead of all looking at one specific topic, we could split up as a group and brainstorm and create on our own and then come back as a group and mix and match and find the best aspects of everyone’s idea and turn it into the best idea we could make. Also, when I look back at the process I often ask myself “did I contribute enough”? and if so “what aspects were specifically inspired by me or my actions”? for the future projects I would like to contribute more at a higher level, providing more impactful ideas or strategies that could help shape our overall project a bit better.

Holidays Work
Before the holidays we finished most of the strings we needed to do and also a few heads but we still had a bit of work to do over the holiday break.
Over the holidays the group came in on 3 days to do some work and to finish the project. I was unavailable to come in on two of the days as I was away but on those two days the group finished the measurements for the bigger heads for the Pois, they also finished the last few Pois we had to do which happened to be the very very large ones that took a lot of time to make as well as a lot of stuffing to fill the heads. On the third day, Tre and I came in and did some final touch-ups to make sure everything is done and up to a good standard. We have established that everything seems to be finished, except for one final poi which we could not complete as one of the other team members had taken it home to finish off. We will come in early on Monday to again make sure if everything is finished and to have one more final meeting to talk about if there are any last minute improvements we could makeÂ
Calculations and scaling
We have introduced another dataset to our object. We are going to use different color string to show the population between Maori (black string), settlers (white string), and also the population due to intermarriage between settlers and Maori (red string). This will be shown by the amount of string from each color. For example when it was 100% Maori all the strings would be black, but when the population is 50% Maori and 50% settlers, half the strings would be black and half would be white.
Over the past few days, the group has been working on a lot of calculations to make sure everything is scaled correctly and is in scale with the relevant datasets. We have finally figured out how long each rope should be and also the color coordination for each rope. These measurements can be seen in the photos. We still haven’t been able to accurately determine and measure the size of the heads of the poi.
