Dearest Daughter,
If youâre reading this, then I am so, so sorry. Itâs my fault you grew up without a father, and it had always been my intent to help you as much as possible ever since we found each other again. I want you to know that you have turned out as wonderful and vibrant as I could have ever wanted an offspring of mine to be. From what Iâve gathered, the last few weeks have been a great opportunity for you to let your hair down (in more than one sense) and define yourself outside of your relationship with that Varrick man.
When I heard that you had betrayed Varrick to work for Kuvira, I knew better. I knew all along that you were better than that. Youâre no mercenary. You have a very strong moral compass, and you follow it unerringly. (Canât imagine who you get it from!)
I was overjoyed to see you alive and well back in Republic City, and I regret not saying so to you, but since our relationship was always meant to be under close guard, I decided against it.
Since I am gone now, I was hoping youâd honor this old manâs final request: Bum-Ju and I have discussed it, and if I werenât able to take care of him anymore, he could either go back to his home in the Spirit World⌠or live with his adopted sisterâ you. If you donât care to, itâs perfectly fine, Bum-Ju would just need you to take him to the Spirit Portals to go to his old home⌠but if you can find it in your heart to take care of him, Iâd be forever appreciative.
Iâm sure you already know, but Iâm so happy I knew you, Zhu Li. I couldnât have asked for a better daughter. I love you.
~Father

Iâve just been busy trying to get my other blog featuring The Elite Three back on its feet before the series ends (Iâm working on a fic right now detailing the adventures of my OCâs during the events of the show.) However, with the time spent there, Iâve kind of fallen off the wagon with Bumi on this blog. If you want to send me a starter, feel free to either tag (#askformercommanderbumi) or mention me in the post and Iâll pick it up. Or, if you prefer to plot before doing a thread, my inbox is always open.

Bumi's voice left him. His mouth shaping unspoken words, he heard Katara on the other end of the phone. "Bumi, are you there? Did you hear me?" "Yeah, yeah, I heard you mom. I-- I gotta go talk to my CO, get some time off to see you." Bumi hung up the phone and went to his quarters. He wanted to cry, he wanted to let all of the shock and horror well up within him, but it seemed to be stuck in the pit of his stomach. His father was truly gone... and he couldn't summon up a single tear...

Denial
Anger
The next few days were a hazy blur to Bumi. He was excused from his ship-duties until they made it into port, where heâd be let loose to go take care of Aangâs affairs. Most of that time was spent in his bunk, staring up at the ceiling in a mental fog.
When the FNS Kuchiku-kan pulled into port, Bumi was the first to descend the ramp onto the docks, where Kya was anxiously awaiting him. She appeared no worse for wear, given the circumstance, and greeted Bumi with a wordless hug that he returned almost mechanically. They booked a night at a local hotel before booking passage to Republic City to manage their fatherâs affairs. And much like his voyage into port, Bumi spent most of that time lying on his bed and staring up at the ceiling.
"Bumi," Kya prompted, sitting on her own bed and looking at her brother, "I know what youâre feeling right now, and bottling it up isnât going to help. I know Momâs going to be a wreck when we meet her, so the two of us have to be strong to support her when we get there. You can open up to me. Tell me whatâs on your mind."
Bumi gave Kya a sidelong glance. What was he supposed to tell her? That heâd felt nothing since heâd received news of his fatherâs passing? That he was a heartless monster for not feeling the same horror and dismay at the death of quite possibly the greatest Avatar? Restorer of Balance and founder of Republic City? He wordlessly rolled over to face the far wall.
Kya frowned and blinked back the tears. âBumi, please. Letâs talk about this.â She stood and placed a hand on Bumiâs shoulder.
Bumi rolled off the bed to his feet opposite Kya, knocking her hand away with his wrist. âI donât want to talk about it Kya!â he said, much louder and more forcefully than he intended. âThereâs nothing to talk about. Dadâs dead and we have to go clean up his mess! Motherâs going to want the whole family back together, and that means fawning over Ten-Ten, Aunt Toph and Lin are going to be there, grouchy as always, as well as Uncle Zuko and Izumi (thatâll be fun and awkward.) I canât go through all of that, I just canât!" Bumi stormed past a horrified Kya to door of their room and left, letting the door slam behind him.
He fumed through the hallway of the hotel, not knowing where he was going or what he intended to do when he got there. He just knew he had to get away; he had to find somewhere where he could escape all of the anxiety and self-loathing that had been building up inside of him.
He could hear Kyaâs footsteps behind him, and he picked up the pace of his angry march, trying to get away without giving her the satisfaction of having to run.
"Bumi."
"Leave me alone."
"Bumi."
"I said leave me alone!â
What happened next was so fast, Bumi didnât even register. As he turned to face Kya, his hand was raised to strike. His sister, with reflexes born and bred from the worldâs greatest waterbender, shot a jet of water from her waist-pouch, blasting her brother against the wall of the corridor and freezing him in place. Her bright blue eyes flashed with outrage.
"Thatâs not fair, Kya!" Bumi shouted, his temper getting the better of him. "Let me down! Let me down now!â
Kya shook her head, her expression a mixture of pity and contempt as she watched Bumi fruitlessly struggle against the ice securing him to the wall.
"Itâs not fair, Kya!" Bumi shouted again. "Itâs not fair! Itâs not⌠Itâs not fairâŚ"
All of the emotion that had been brewing inside of Bumi seemed to surge forth and burn out within Bumi as he was forced to face his sister and accept that he couldnât escape the ramifications of his fatherâs death.
Seeing the change come over her brother, Kya melted the water and bended it back into her waist-pouch, catching Bumi in a tight hug as he was released.
Bumi returned the hug in full. âYou shouldnât have done that,â he said softly. âIâm soaked to the bone.â
"I got all the water I used back in the pouch. Youâre fine." Kya replied, still holding on.
"No. Iâm pretty sure you missed some." Bumi said, pressing a wet face into his sisterâs shoulder. His body shook silently as he hugged his sister in apology and support.
"Rightâ right, who would forget the Leiren family?" Only he would get himself in trouble with a prestigious family. One that owned a rhino-bear at that. Once again he was collateral damageâ nothing unheard of either.Â
Sigh
"Iâm not doing you any favors anymore. I canât keep getting in trouble for your sake. You do know I do have a reputation to upholdâŚ"
Bumi nodded slowly and gave a long dramatic sigh. "I... I guess you're right, Iroh." he said, his voice choking up. "I'm just an old man who made a mistake, and now I need to pay for it. I lost my money, and now I get to lose my limbs... all because I had hoped a friend would go on a date with a millionaire heiress."
Bumi gave a long, snotty sniff as he shuffled towards the door. His eyes glistened with crocodile tears.
"Who knows, maybe I can find a way to get along without limbs... Ming Hua had those water-arms... Or maybe I could pull a Zaheer and learn to fly by letting go of all my earthly possessions... I've already lost all of my friends..."

"Um... that last line had too many syllables."
He sat through many conversations just like this one many many times before. Long, extravagantâ most of which involved the former commander giving him an entire play by play to relive the moment.Â
He wasnât even surprised at the outcome of this story, he just knew he was going to be involved at some point. âAnd if I donât go?â
Bumi hesitated to make eye contact as he answered. "I might... might get my arms and legs torn off by her pet rhino-bear. Yes. She has a pet rhino bear. She's Yentin Leiren, of the Leiren family? That big family with investments all over the world?"
Bumi forced a toothy smile that didn't reflect in his slightly terrified eyes. "It's just a date, Iroh, nothing for you to be nervous about; with your... your nice hair, and eyebrows, and cheekbones..."

"So... You know how I went out gambling last night?"
Big News! Sentence Starters
"And pray tellâ what happened this time?â He asked, expecting another extravagant tale of his.
"Well, I was trying to charm this lovely lady by showing off my fantastic skills at high-low. Unfortunately they weren't fantastic enough to get me out of a really bad losing streak. By the end of it, I bet a date with you against all of my losses."
"And I lost again."
"Your date is at eight at Flameo's. Sorry buddy."
